Synopsis
When the sky opened, the System chose its players. Everyone received a class. A path. A purpose. Everyone… except me. While others became Hunters, Tanks, and Couriers— my status showed only one word: **Unregistered.** The System didn’t recognize me. It tried to fix the error. It failed. And then… something else answered. A second presence. A voice that doesn’t belong to the System. A stat that shouldn’t exist. **Echo.** Now the world is breaking— monsters crawling through reality, zones rewriting themselves, rules changing without warning. And every time I survive… something inside me changes too. The System watches. The players level up. But I’m not playing by its rules anymore. Because when I broke the door— **something broke back.** And it’s still inside me. Watching. Waiting. Smiling. — **When the System rejects you… what accepts you instead?**

Chapter 1 - THE DOOR THAT KNOCKED BACK

The ceiling peels open like wet paper.

Not cracks—teeth.

Rows of white, human molars grind through concrete above me, chewing the sky. Dust rains down in hot, choking bursts. Someone is screaming. It might be me.

Then the lights go out.

And something in the dark laughs.

I'm on my feet before I remember standing.

Phones are lighting up the room like dying fireflies. Notifications stack, overlap, glitch—my screen vibrates so hard it slips from my hand and skids under a desk.

"Did you see that?!" Raghav shouts from across the classroom, knocking over a chair. "The roof—what the hell—"

The building jerks.

Not shakes. Jerks. Like something yanks it sideways and lets go.

Windows shatter inward. Glass hits my cheek. I taste iron.

A message burns across my vision.

Not my phone.

My eyes.

[SYSTEM INITIALIZING…]

[ERROR: Host Resistance Detected]

[FORCING SYNC…]

"Get out!" someone yells.

We rush the door, twenty bodies trying to become one. I get shoved into the wall. My shoulder screams. The hallway beyond is worse—people running, slipping, crawling. A girl is clutching her ears, sobbing.

"Make it stop—make it stop—"

I don't hear anything.

Not until I do.

A low hum, like a server room. No—like breathing. The building is breathing.

[WELCOME, PARTICIPANT #A-17]

"Nope," I mutter, shaking my head. "Nope, this is—this is a seizure, or—gas leak—"

[ASSIGNING BASE PARAMETERS…]

[WARNING: DATA CORRUPTION DETECTED]

[RETRYING…]

Something slams into the far end of the hallway.

Not a person.

Too fast. Too many limbs.

It crawls along the ceiling, dragging itself with elbows that bend the wrong way. Skin hangs loose like it forgot how to fit.

Someone freezes beneath it.

"Don't move," I whisper, like that helps.

The thing tilts its head.

It doesn't have a face.

Just a mouth.

It drops.

I run.

No plan. Just run.

Feet pounding, lungs burning, shoving past bodies. The exit sign flickers ahead. A guy grabs my arm—Amit, I think.

"Wait, wait—what is that thing—"

"I don't know!" I snap, ripping free. "And I'm not waiting to ask!"

Behind us, something tears.

Wet. Fast.

Amit doesn't follow.

I don't look back.

I burst through the stairwell door and nearly trip over a girl crouched on the steps.

She looks up at me, eyes wide.

"You see it too?" she asks.

"Yeah."

"Good," she says, voice shaking. "Thought I lost it."

A beat.

We both hear the thing in the hallway.

Closer.

[SYNC COMPLETE]

The world stutters.

For half a second, everything doubles. Two stairwells. Two girls. Two versions of me, one blinking slower than the other.

Then it snaps back.

[INITIAL STATUS GENERATED]

Name: Unknown

Level: 0

State: Unregistered

"Unregistered?" I whisper. "What does that even—"

The girl flinches. "You got it too?"

"Yeah. You?"

She nods, swallowing. "Mine says Level 1. 'Courier Type.' Whatever that means."

Of course it does.

Of course hers works.

Mine's broken.

A wet thump echoes above us.

The thing is in the stairwell now.

We both freeze.

[COMPENSATION GRANTED: IRREGULAR HOST]

"What?" I breathe.

[STAT SET UNLOCKED]

Strength: 3

Agility: 4

Endurance: 2

Luck: ???

Echo: 1

"Echo?" I say out loud.

The girl stares at me. "You got a weird one too?"

Before I can answer—

[SKILL ACQUIRED: Panic Dash]

Description: Run faster when afraid. The more afraid, the faster. Side effects unknown.

Cooldown: Variable

Cost: Emotional Stability

I bark a laugh. "That's not funny."

"Is it good?" she asks.

"I don't know yet."

The thing above us scrapes across the ceiling.

Guess I'm about to find out.

It drops two flights down.

We run.

The stairwell twists.

No—changes.

The landing stretches too far. The door we passed is now behind us again. My foot hits a step that wasn't there a second ago. I stumble, slam into the railing.

"Wrong way!" the girl shouts.

"There is no right way!"

[ENVIRONMENT FLAGGED: UNSTABLE ZONE]

[RULES MAY VARY]

"Great," I gasp. "Love that."

The thing lunges up the stairs, mouth opening wider than its head should allow.

I feel it then.

Fear.

Cold. Sharp. Electric.

[Panic Dash ACTIVATED]

My body moves before I decide to.

Everything narrows. Sound drops out. My legs snap forward like I've been pulled by a wire. I take three steps and clear an entire flight.

"What—" the girl chokes behind me.

"Keep up!" I yell, not slowing.

The fear spikes higher.

I go faster.

We hit a door.

I slam into it.

It doesn't open.

Locked.

Of course it's locked.

The thing lands behind us.

Close enough that I feel its breath on my neck.

"Move!" the girl screams.

"I'm trying!"

The handle twists under my hand.

Nothing.

[CHOICE DETECTED]

My vision flickers.

Two options burn into the air in front of me.

[FORCE ENTRY]

Break the door. Risk injury. Noise will attract entities.

[ECHO STEP](Locked)

Requirement not met.

"What the hell is Echo Step?!" I shout.

No answer.

The thing's shadow stretches over us.

I don't have time.

"Back up!" I yell.

The girl hesitates—then trusts me.

Good.

I step back.

Heart hammering.

Fear climbing.

[Panic Dash — OVERLOAD]

I slam into the door shoulder-first.

Pain explodes down my arm.

Wood cracks.

Not enough.

The thing screeches.

Right behind me.

I hit the door again.

Something in my chest snaps.

Not bone.

Something else.

[ECHO STAT REACTING…]

[UNAUTHORIZED TRIGGER]

For a split second—

I'm not alone.

Another me moves with me.

Same motion. Same impact.

Double force.

The door shatters.

We tumble through into a classroom.

Desks overturned. Windows gone. Wind howling through a sky that isn't sky anymore—just a swirling gray void.

I roll, gasping, clutching my shoulder.

The girl slams the broken door behind us, dragging a desk against it.

"Is it—did we—"

The door bulges.

Once.

Twice.

Then still.

Silence.

I laugh.

Short. Sharp. Wrong.

"That was—okay—yeah, that was normal—totally—"

"Shut up," she says, breathing hard. "Just—shut up."

Fair.

My vision flickers again.

[LEVEL UP DETECTED]

"What?" I blink.

"I didn't even—"

[LEVEL 1 → 2]

[REWARD PENDING…]

[WARNING: INSTABILITY INCREASED]

"Instability?" I whisper.

"Why is that a warning?"

The girl looks at me slowly. "Mine didn't say that."

Of course it didn't.

The room darkens.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

Like someone flipped a switch.

A new message appears.

Different font.

Jagged.

Almost… handwritten.

[HELLO, ECHO]

My stomach drops.

"I didn't pick that name," I say.

The girl frowns. "What name?"

The message changes.

[YOU BROKE THE DOOR TWICE]

[I LIKE THAT]

Something taps on the inside of my skull.

Not pain.

A knock.

Waiting.

I don't move.

I don't breathe.

[DO YOU WANT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU OPEN IT?]

"…Open what?" I whisper.

There's no answer.

Just a new option blinking at the edge of my vision.

[UNLOCK: ECHO STEP]

Cost: ???

Warning: Irreversible

The girl grabs my arm. "Hey. Hey—look at me. Something's wrong with your eyes."

I don't look at her.

I'm staring at the option.

At the cost that isn't there.

At the word irreversible.

And the faint feeling that something on the other side of that "knock" is smiling.

My finger twitches.

Wait… what just happens if I press it?
