Chapter 1 - A Strange Encounter

Aria Knight was on her way home one day, walking through a quiet street in her home town. Aria was often described as pretty with soft facial features and long, wavy golden-blonde hair. Her piercing blue eyes grabbed people's attention. Standing at five-foot-nine, she was quite tall for a girl her age.

"Another day of feeling mediocre and left behind in a world of people with amazing abilities," she sighed to herself. She had finished her classes for the day at her local high-school, but couldn't help but feel as if something important was missing in life.

.....

The world changed significantly a decade ago. Portals suddenly started appearing with monsters and supernatural beings coming out of them without warning. With the arrival of these monster, there was another event that would change humanity forever, the awakening. Shortly after the first portals appeared, some people began to manifest powers and abilities through their ancient bloodlines. A large amount of humans had minuscule traces of mythological DNA tucked away and hidden within their genetic code. These bloodlines began to bubble to the surface as a self-defense mechanism to defend humanity against these creatures.

The objective of these monster attacks was unknown, however their desire to harm humans was clear. Eventually humans were able to push back, and bring back order to the world through the creation of Guilds and the government agencies. As monsters were defeated, the world discovered that their bodies contained new elements and materials that could be used to enhance technology and infrastructure. Since the appearance of the first portal 10 years ago, the world had progressed rapidly in its development.

As for Aria, life remained normal. Boringly so. She was currently being raised by her older brother Ben, who was seven years older than her. Unfortunately he was all the family she had left. A monster attack took their parents away from them, when a portal opened close to their home. Aria and Ben were at school when it happened, so they survived unlike their parents. They were provided for through government run orphanages until Ben turned eighteen, and he was able to take over as Aria's guardian. Ben began to work straight out of high-school to provide for Aria. As a result, they have a close relationship, and Aria wished she could protect him after all he's sacrificed for her.

Aria turned around a corner, heading through an older park near their apartment building in the outskirts of downtown Lorendale. The park was eerily quiet that day. All of a sudden she heard a strange humming noise, a sound that she had never heard before. It was both ethereal and musical. This humming noise grew louder as a ball of light suddenly appeared directly in front of her.

Startled, Aria fell backward onto the ground. The small radiant sphere lowered itself, matching Aria's eyes level, and hovered there while emanating a lovely hum. After the initial shock Aria just experienced, she began to observe this odd object that seemed to come from the sky. It was pulsing as though alive and gave off an aura of pure brilliance.

"What in the world are you?" she whispered.

Aria couldn't help herself as she reached out her hand towards the strange floating object in front of her, throwing all caution to the wind. She somehow could sense that the object wouldn't harm her. As her finger made contact with the item, it began to glow even brighter and then was somehow absorbed into her body. Aria's vision darkened as she blacked out. Something deep within her blood began to stir.
