Chapter 1 - Frozen City

Cold.

It's so f*cking cold!

Feeling the chill in the room, Feng Yang instinctively wrapped himself tighter in the blanket, curling up into a ball.

But as time went on, the room kept getting colder.

The low temperature eventually forced Feng Yang fully awake.

Only then did he realize something was wrong.

It was the hottest time of summer, and since this was the south, the temperature should have been at least in the thirties.

How could it suddenly be so cold for no reason?

Feng Yang lay in bed and glanced at the air conditioner above his head.

The indicator light was off.

Clearly, the room had lost power. In other words, this extreme cold had nothing to do with the air conditioner.

In fact, it wasn't just the room.

Feng Yang noticed that even the windows were covered with a thick layer of frost!

This was very unusual.

Frost on windows only happens in winter.

Feng Yang was puzzled beyond words.

"Could it be because of the global warming that the temperature has dropped overnight? But the drop was far too dramatic."

Before long, Feng Yang, still sitting inside his room trying to figure out what was going on outside, was already unbearably cold.

Shivering, he quickly rummaged through the closet, found a leather jacket, and put it on.

Because of the season, Feng Yang didn't have any winter clothes in his rented room.

A single leather jacket wasn't enough to ward off the chill.

Helpless, Feng Yang wrapped himself in the air-conditioning blanket from the bed, before walking to the window and looking down.

Feng Yang's apartment was on the eighteenth floor, offering an excellent view.

Looking down, he could easily see most of the city.

And then Feng Yang realized: overnight, the world outside his window seemed to have entered an ice age.

Rooftops, streets, and even parked cars were all covered with a thick layer of snow.

What puzzled Feng Yang most was that none of the cars parked in the middle of the road were running. They all seemed to be turned off.

Not only that, even more strangely, although it was daytime, there wasn't a single pedestrian on the street below.

"Could it be that due to the sudden temperature drop, everyone had gone home, leaving the streets deserted?" Feng Yang wonders while rubbing his hands together to get some warmth.

"No, that was unlikely," Feng Yang quickly dismissed that theory.

After all, even if it was cold outside, someone would have gone out to investigate after such a strange event. At the very least, not all the cars on the street would have broken down.

More importantly, Feng Yang also noticed that the normally bustling city was now eerily quiet.

It was as if the entire city population had vanished out of thin air!

"So, what exactly happened last night? Did I eat something poisonous or transmigrate to another world, a parallel world of the earth, or something? Otherwise, things here don't make any sense," As an experienced otaku and heavy web-novels reader, Feng Yang has read countless time travel, transmigrate, and reincarnation type novels and quickly creates a weird unsceitific theory in his mind.

Feng Yang walks back to the bed, picks up supposed to be his phone, hoping to find some news online.

But when he turned it on, he saw it had no signal at all, which didn't surprise him much. He walked to the kitchen, and as he expected, not only was there no signal, but the internet, water, and gas in his apartment were also cut off.

Feng Yang's apartment was in the city center; under normal circumstances, there shouldn't be water or power outages.

Thinking about this, Feng Yang couldn't help but speculate: "Perhaps the people in this city had truly disappeared."

Maybe because of the extreme cold, Feng Yang's body began to tremble uncontrollably as time passed.

Feng Yang knew that with just a leather jacket and an air-conditioning blanket, he wouldn't last long.

He needed to go out and find warmer clothes.

With that thought, he grabbed his backpack, packed a piece of bread and two cans of beer from the refrigerator, and went out.

Because of the power outage, Feng Yang had to walk down from the 18th floor.

The cold wind blowing through the stairwell was biting.

At home, Feng Yang hadn't felt it so strongly, but once he reached the stairwell, he realized the outside temperature had dropped to an unbearable level.

His current clothes certainly wouldn't keep him warm for long.

Because it was so cold, Feng Yang could only huddle up and force himself outside the building.

He discovered that in just one night, the snow on the streets had accumulated to a depth of nearly twenty or thirty centimeters.

This struck him as unbelievable.

No matter how heavy the snowfall had been, it was impossible for it to accumulate that much overnight.

Clearly, something unimaginable had happened in the city after Feng Yang fell asleep. This made him believe that he indeed came to another world without himself knowing.

Feng Yang, carrying his backpack, entered a convenience store on the street.

The goods inside were perfectly preserved, showing no signs of being looted.

Feng Yang took a hamburger from the store's warming display case and took a bite, it was a common chicken burger sold in convenience stores.

Because of the temperature, the chicken burger was quite hard, but still barely edible.

After emptying the warming display case, Feng Yang took a bottle of cold chocolate milk from the refrigerated section and drank it, finally feeling a little full.

Considering his survival, Feng Yang took several lighters, dozens or so chocolate bars, a lot of instant noodles, a few water bottles, and a small knife, from the shelves of essential supplies.

After gathering these necessities, he went into a clothing store.

Because of the season, he could only find summer clothes and a few spring/autumn garments. These weren't very warm.

Since he couldn't find thicker clothes, Feng Yang would have to wear more layers.

With food, tools, and warmer clothing, Feng Yang felt slightly more at ease.

He planned to go outside and see if anyone else in the city was still alive. Even seeing a dead body will give him some comfort rather than finding himself in an empty city.

But just as he was about to leave the clothing store, he suddenly witnessed an unbelievable scene.

Through the store's glass, he saw a humanoid, transparent creature glowing with blue light, floating in the air like a ghost!

This blue ghost instantly sharpened Feng Yang's focus.

"What on earth was that?"

To avoid attracting the ghost's attention, Feng Yang suppressed his fear and slowly backed away.

As he retreated, he dared not make a sound.

He was afraid any noise would draw the ghost's attention.

Fortunately, the ghost didn't seem to notice Feng Yang; instead, it turned and entered the convenience store they had just been in.

Clearly, the ghost, lacking "sight," couldn't "see" Feng Yang in the clothing store.

Seeing the ghost turn and leave, Feng Yang finally relaxed completely.

At the same time, questions arose in his mind.

Where did the heavy snow on the street and that ghost come from?

What exactly happened last night?
