Chapter 1 - #001. An unexpected future

A loud explosion of bright light happened in a strange room, it looked like a neutron star imploding on itself but it did not give any heat or smoke just an emptiness filled with swirling mass of white light.

It continued for a few more seconds burning itself out, and providing light to the room. The room was white and with silver tiles, it had looked like a massive office with multiple work tables that used to house computers, but now they were either down on the ground or smashed.

There were files down on the ground scattered around, chairs toppled over. The ball of light slowly began to shrink but not before dropping a young woman unto the ground.

She groaned as she fell on her side, wincing and moaning she watched the ball of light she had come from disappear leaving her behind.

The absence of the light left the massive office to its initial radiance, there was light coming from the lamps, but they were dim— almost as if they had been overused to the point they could not shine the brightest.

The young woman had thick brown hair looking like a hot mess, she sat up straight trying to catch her breath. She looked around her, her eyes still trying to adjust to the room. Her emerald green eyes soon started to make out the shape of objects in the room.

"Dad?" She called out, her voice sharp but doubting.

She wore a dark green hoodie over a black shirt and crazy jeans, not the ideal outfit for visiting the office. That's is if she was planning to visit the office in the first place, in fact she had only just returned from college days prior.

Her father was a world famous scientist in the twenty third century, he developed many great machines used to help humanity. But all of this was funded by the company he partnered with, together they became one of the greatest movers for technological advancements.

She would come by whenever she could to spend some time with her father or help him, which he rarely needed. But on that very say, he was working on a project that had taken his attention for years and was almost at a breakthrough.

She did not know whose idea it was, was it her who decided she wanted to be there or was it he who wanted her there. Her mind was fuzzy thinking about the details.

All she knew was that she was there standing behind the crowd of scientists, watching her father demonstrate a science many said was impossible. Some even called it forbidden.

There was a huge white arc pumping out a swirling sea of stars, it looked like waves of an ocean only whiter and more corporeal.

"A way to see the future through the eyes of the universe", her father had said right before turning it on.

She knew he had been working on a way to see the future but it never occured to her that even her father could make it work.

Her father started by tossing an apple through the arc, it went into the ripple of light and came out at the other end as a rotten muck.

The second test, was a cat. It came out at the other end old and wrinkly. The third was a dog that came out decayed. Apparently, it was a way to speed time up. It would revolutionise medicine if they could find a way to make drugs that adapted to diseases over time.

But then the demonstration went wrong, the arc was shut off after they had finished the tests. The arc reacted violently and instead of going off, it started to siphon the power on it own. It grew hungry for more power, till it stated to grow out of their control.

An emergency escape was issued but her father was frozen with fear, afraid to see his work fail before his eyes. The machine should have killed him but she ran in to save him, if only she had been more faster she would have escaped it's pull before it sucked her into it.

She could not move, she could not think. One second she was hearing her father screaming her name, seeing the fear and tears in his eyes. Now she was here.

Emilia did not want to believe what she feared had happened so she called out again. "Dad, are you there?" There was no answer.

She looked around her once more, everything was a mess, the room was not anywhere familiar to her. "Don't tell me it actually worked." Before she could take her next action something interrupted her, it was the sound of metal scraping the wall. It came at the distance and was moving in her direction, she pushed herself to her feet her eyes looking in the direction of the noise.

She could barely see anything in the light of the room, and would have missed it had it not been giving out a light of its own— a small red glow.

"What on earth is that?" She spoke lightly.

Her eyes widened as the strange figure started to make its way closer to her, it had the shape of a man but did not move like one. It limped awkwardly, one of its legs was broken in an odd angle. And for a reason it only had one eye that gave off a bright red glow.

When it spotted her, it stopped limping and stared at her.

Emilia felt the air growing colder, her heart started to thump loudly in her chest that she begged it to stop. Saliva rolled down her throat as she tried to understand what was going on. "Hello, where am I?"

Despite her question the strange man seemed complacent to give her an answer. Instead he started to advance towards her, limping at first. The screeching noise started, this time louder. She could see sparks flying off it's leg as it barely dragged itself over the floor.

Emilia took a reclusive step back. Her words barely articulated themselves. "Hey, who are you?"

In response to her question the strange man started to pick up speed, it's limp turned quickly climbed into a blitze. It's speed becoming inhuman, Emilia watched in horrors as it picked up one of the worktables in its way and hurled it at her like a soccer ball.

She spun around and ran as fast as her legs could, a few seconds later she could hear the explosion of the table where she she was standing earlier. As she ran around in the dimly lit office room, she took one quick glance back at the strange man and it filled her with dread.

The strange man was now sprinting and tossing multiple work desks at her with almost accurate precision.

Emilia outran her heart, screaming. "What the hell is that...?"
