Chapter 1 - 1. Father Figure

It was like an abyss, to be more precise, a void, completely dark and devoid of essence!

Her gaze flickered back and forth as she processed her location in its entirety. She turned slowly, desperately trying to figure out where she was.

Then, in an instant, it struck her. Another set of eyes, from a distance, peering into her eyes, with the same confusion that resided in her heart, evident in his eyes.

They were attached at the stomach by a glowing line, more like a rope which extended from within them as if a part of them, connecting them to one another.

Their mouths slowly parted as his jade green eyes sank into her ocean blue ones.

It all seemed too real to be a dream! There was nothing surreal about him!

Just as she opened her mouth to speak, she felt something encircle her waist; looking down, she saw what appeared to be another rope, but rather, one

made of dark matter like particles, encircle her waist.

Looking up, she realized, he too was tied, and in an instant they were both pulled away, further into the darkness by the dark matter like rope that came from within the darkness.

It seemed to be apart of the void she found herself in—they were made from the same element.

Strangely enough, the glowing rope didn't cut but rather elongated, their connection didn't cut!

Mavi's eyes shut open, abruptly. Panting, she tried to catch her breath while clinging onto her chest. Beads of sweat clung onto her forehead, and she gulped. It was all too vivid to be a dream. Rather unnerving, one might say, to be seeing the same figure in your dreams, year in and year out but tonight was rather different compared to other series of dreams she's had.

Before tonight, she had never met him nevertheless had eye contact with him, she would only see glimpses of his life play out before her eyes and she was always invinsible to him, the main character of her dreams and everyone else.

At first she took it as a dream, but when it persisted with each night showing a different chapter to his story, the thought of him not being a dream came to mind but she never took it seriously as she had never seen him in reality but tonight had changed everything, he looked too real to not be real, his emotions and the shock on his face were all too defined and human-like.

This new episode brought all her thesis about him being just a figure that lingered in her dreams to doubt.

What if he was real and he too had being seeing her in his dreams? But of course, all this seemed too good to be true, there were more other pressing matters to worry about, like the alarm clock that had been ringing for a while in the background.

Awakening from her thoughts, she switched it off.

Getting up from her bed, she walked up to her closed window and observed as the snow fell from the sky in clumps and as cold water trickled down her window, they were both just different forms of the same element.

Watching the cold and desolate winter was her pastime, she found pleasure in it as the lonely weather resonated well with her heart.

Today was a school day, she sighed as she went into the bathroom, another painstaking day to go through.

After changing into her school uniform, she gazed at her reflection in the mirror, somewhat hoping she wouldn't see herself but was met by the sight of her ocean blue eyes, devoid of emotions piercing into the glass.

Her build was pretty small for a girl her age, and her bone-white silver hair swaying in the background was quite abnormal for a normal human, without any prior skin or health conditions.

Mavi took her black bonnet and tucked her hair inside, making sure to not leave any strands out. She hated the attention her hair brought her and she most especially hated having to explain that it was her natural hair colour. She had tried dying her hair several times before, but strangely enough, anytime water touched it, it would always wash away along with the traces of dye that smeared her hair.

After dressing up, Mavi scoured the house for her father figure, but once again he had spent the night out, drowning himself in alcohol, most likely.

She bit her lips and sighed before leaving the house, disappointed.

Walking in the snow was another thing she derived pleasure in, she was like a tree in winter, bearing no life yet still standing while being pressed by the weight of the endless snow.

The view was hazy due to the intense snow fall and she could only squint her eyes to see further. The cold seeped through her skin and into her veins with every step she took.

The soft crunch beneath her boots and her ragged breathing where the only sounds she could hear amid the snow storm on the lonely road she took to school.

Her threadbare coat failed to give her warmth, though she clenched onto it closer and tighter, if only her incompetent father figure favoured his adopted daughter more than the little pleasure he derived from drinking.

The walk to school was rather long and gruelsome but she got there on time. Walking into her classroom, she greeted no one and went straight to her table.

Mavi took her sketchbook and pencil and started meditating on her dreams as she doodled away, not paying attention to what she was drawing.

When she was done, she looked at the paper, she was taken aback by the sketch of the figure from her dreams, why did she draw him? Who was he?

She gritted her teeth, hitting her head with her pencil as she tried to think of something plausible but of course she couldn't.

Giving up, she tore the paper and crumbled it. Pushing it to the side, she rested her head on the table and slept till class begun.

School was rather a place for her to while away her time, rather than learn. She had no friends due to her reserved and crazy nature and would spend most of her time sleeping in school that it made no sense she was among top 10 students.

School rounded up quickly and she was off to her part-time job, where she worked in a restaurant as a waiter.

Since her father figure failed to provide for all her needs she had to take up a job at a young age, and would sometimes end up overworking herself that it was no surprise she slept alot at school.

By the time she was done working, the snowstorm had already subdued and the sun was already setting.

Mavi took the lonely path she always took back home, though it was longer she loved the silence it gave.

On reaching home, Mavi was greeted by the front door which was left ajar and was taken aback by the footwears she didn't recognize.

They barely had any visitors, not even his relatives came by to see him—she had never met them before. So why where they so many footwears? Could they have been thieves? No, which thief would leave their footwears out but what was more strange was her father figure who was just a small farmer that made little money had so many visitors.

Stealthily, she entered the house, she could hear people talking from within their little parlour.

Curiosity got the best of her, and she decided to see who those people were. One step at a time, she tiptoed towards the parlour, not wanting to interrupt them, just in case her father figure didn't want her present.

She hid behind a wall, and slipped one of her eyes out to peak. Five men dressed in expensive pristine wears sat in their worn-out chairs, while her old man served them drinks.

Mavi wondered who those people where for the cranky old man to be so polite with them—he was never nice to her or anyone else, except they had money and this people literally screamed money.

"So Mr Fischer after due consideration, we have agreed to buy this land," one of the posh men said.

The glint in her eyes disappeared as she heard those words. The old man was going to sell their home?!

Anger brimmed from within her. As Mr Fischer, her father figure, was about to sign the file, Mavi screamed,

"No!"

Everyone stopped to look at her with due surprise but her father figure's face was stricken with anger but because they weren't alone he bottled it inside and forced a smile onto his face.

"But Mr Fischer," another man said, "You never told us you had a daughter, you said you were alone."

Matthew Fischer would never miss the opportunity to paint himself a good man. He got up and faced the group of men with a saddened expression—which was clearly fake, to her at least.

"She isn't my daughter, I found her deep in the forest on a fine day when I went haunting. Her little body was cold and almost lifeless, I couldn't bring myself to abandon her so I took her in and raised her. Sorry for her rudeness she's just so attached to this shabby little place."

"No, no it's fine we understand. You're such a good man."

With that her father figure walked towards her and grabbed her hand.

He squeezed it tightly as he dragged her towards her room.

Mavi protested and tried to free herself as they proceeded towards her room.

"You can't do this, this is our home!"

Of course, her words fell on deaf ears. The cranky old man kept silent till they reached her room.

He opened the door and threw her in, closing it with a bang and locking it, he said,

"Don't you dare, scream or try any of your petty tricks with me! I'll be back for you as soon as this people leave."

With that, he left. Mavi fell to her butt with a thud. She sighed, leaning her head on the door and facing the ceiling.

Few minutes later, the rattling of the door knob woke her up from her thoughts. She got up immediately.

Her father figure opened the door. Before she could say anything or protest, he spoke,

"Don't bother the deed is already done."

"So where do we go now?" Mavi asked.

The man averted his eyes from her gaze, as if hiding something.

Noticing his sudden change of behavior, Mavi continued,

"If it's money for my college tuition, you don't have to pay. I'll take an extra year and get a well paying job."

He was still silent, and looked more guilty now than ever, Mavi continued,

"If you're short of money I'll—"

"It's enough!" he screamed. "If you really want to help me, you'd do as I say."

"What do you mean?" Mavi asked, squeezing the sides of her coat.
