Chapter 1 - Mark of the Damned

Chapter 1: The Awakening

Winter clawed at Ethren Village, biting through coats and chilling bones right to the core. The sharp wind howled as it weaved between the ancient stone buildings, throwing the first snowflakes of the season into the air. These fragile, delicate flakes settled quietly on the ground, a stark reminder of how bitter the cold could be.Kriel basically a dreg of society was constantly treated terribly in Ethren Village by village era especially children with no shoes to wear an orphan even to wear they made Kriel walk threw broken class as amusement the older kids they laughed at him.

In the village square, a group of kids huddled together, their ceremonial robes fluttering limply against the icy gusts well, all except one who stood apart from the crowd. Kriel watched everything unfold from a distance. He looked different, wrapped in ragged fabric that hung loosely from his thin frame. His hollow eyes were steady, fixed on the other children. They looked so full of hope, while he felt a quiet storm brewing inside him.

Even the adults felt the weight of his gaze, shifting uncomfortably under the unseen pressure. Today was the Awakening ceremony, a big deal that marked the day children turned six. It was sacred, or so they said regular humans are given the power of the Mysterious Astral Veil The reason this is so the nations can cultivate military might so the enroll into Astral Academy to face the terror of the Astral Monsters and terrors the Abyss. There were tales about what happened to those too young to step into the light of the Astral Veil they were vaporized from existence. He was scared of getting swallowed by that light, but today was different. Today felt like it could change everything.

This is it, Kriel thought, a flutter of something wild racing through him. They'll see who I really am. They'll all see. The sky darkened, thick clouds swirling ominously above as Elder Varun stepped onto the stone platform in the square.

His pure, white robes billowed around him like ghostly banners. He raised the Astral Staff device given to every Astral priest to perform this ritual it was an ancient relic, and a golden light shot through the air, pulsing brightly, igniting the hearts of everyone present.

"Today," he proclaimed, his voice booming with conviction, "we separate the worthy from the weak, the chosen from the forgotten! Step forward, children of destiny!" Kriel felt those words slice through the chilling air.

"Children of destiny? More like children of delusion," he muttered under his breath, a bitter smile creeping across his lips. "You'll all pay for your blind faith." One by one, the chosen kids stepped forward, encased in radiant light that revealed elemental marks on their skin fire, water, earth, wind, and some weird unexplainable ones. Each mark erupted like fireworks, bright symbols of their destined powers.

Joy exploded from their parents, cries of elation echoing through the square.

"Look at her! One woman shouted joyous Elara is fire-bound!" a proud mother exclaimed, eyes glistening.

"And Rohn just became earth-bound! What a future he'll have," another parent chimed in, pride radiating from her voice. Kriel's heart twisted painfully in his chest. They were all so blind.

Their joy suffocated him. His gaze hardened, like a predator sizing up its prey. He watched those glowing marks igniting upon innocent skin warm and bright, full of promise.

Those fools think they're safe hmph illl make sure they'll suffer, he thought darkly, feeling a chill grip his heart. But who will save them when darkness comes?* At that moment, Kriel's name rang out in the stillness. Silence fell over everyone like a heavy blanket, and anticipation thickened the air.

Elder Varun's expression soured as Kriel made his way forward, bloody footprints trailing behind him.Kriel thought to himself the humiliation I endured making walk on broke glasses as amusement... if I get rejected and I die you all will be saved if not your destined to die by hands he thought darkly to himself.

He was barefoot; the cold stone bit into him like it wanted to remind him of his place.

The world seemed to pause, villagers barely breathing.

As Kriel stepped onto the platform, the golden light surged towards him. But instead of illuminating him, it fizzled out, retreating like it was scared of him. It didn't touch him, only leaving an aching emptiness behind.

"Void?" Kriel whispered, a smile spreading across his face. The resonance thrummed beneath his skin like gentle thunder.

Varun's face paled, losing his usual confidence.

"Markless," he stammered, words heavy and laden with fear. "Remove him! This… this thing doesn't belong here!" A ripple of panic coursed through the crowd. Mothers clutched their kids tightly while men murmured harshly among themselves.

"Look at him," sneered a boy in front, dark hair tousled.

"He's just a beggar!"

"Yeah! No mark, no power! What a loser!" another taunted, laughter ringing hollow against Kriel's ears.

He focused on their voices, feeling armor form around him. They thought they understood power, but they had no idea what true strength looked like.

*Just wait,* he thought savagely.

Snow began to fall heavier now, thick flakes swirling around him like whispers of fate drawing near. Kriel traced the mark of the void on his skin, an invisible scar that felt alive, igniting his very core.

Kriel was about to walk away when a girl approached him...

"Why are you smiling?" she asked, a mix of fear and curiosity in her wide eyes. "You… you got nothing."

"Ah, but you see…" Kriel leaned closer, locking eyes with her. A strange gravity sat in his voice, something timeless lurking just beneath. "I'm free."

Her brows knitted in confusion. "Free? But you're nothing at all!"

"Oh, but you'll see one day, little girl." His voice lowered, and the weight of his words hung thickly in the air.

Before she could respond, Elder Varun shouted, his voice cutting like ice, "Get out! This ground is sacred, not for your kind!"

Kriel hesitated; fury and pride battled within him. The jeers and whispers danced around him, but he refused to back down. He lifted his chin defiantly.

"I'll show you all," he murmured, finding his breath steady.

With surprising swiftness, Kriel whispered, "Yes." The air throbbed with power around him, the dark void pulsing with anticipation. As the crowd began to disperse, Kriel felt the weight of rejection turn into a cloak of resolve.

He had finally found his purpose in this chaos. The coming years promised hardship the brutality of life awaited him but he was ready. Each moment of pain would only deepen the hunger inside him, feeding the darkness eager to be unleashed.

Markless. Despised. But the void was patient, and Kriel reveled in it. *I have all the time in the world to become a monster.*

As the ceremony faded into memory, the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the snowy ground in a blood-red hue. Kriel's shadow stretched long and eerie against the crimson backdrop. The first stars twinkled above; each one a silent witness to his awakening. He caught snippets of fearful whispers drifting through the village. "Varun couldn't bear to look at him. He's cursed," a man murmured, his eyes darting around nervously.

"I'll keep my kids away from him," an older woman warned, clutching her daughter tightly. "Misfortune follows those like him."

Kriel clenched his fists.

Anger simmered just beneath the surface, eager to erupt, but he squashed it down. *Patience,* he told himself, taking a deep breath.

"Let them think what they want," he muttered as he slipped into the shadows of the fading twilight. He was ready to carve his own path into the future, a place where no light dared to tread. The dark journey had just begun.,
