Chapter 1 - Key to the city

"I could lay here forever" she said while still struggling to catch her breath, the past ten minutes has been a hell of a ride

"I wish I could say the same but unfortunately, it's work o'clock" Jamie said as he picked up his phone to turn off his alarm while Leah rolled off him letting herself fall back into the soft mattress.

"You don't have to go" Leah said clinging to Jamie with her arms strongly wrapped around him, she held him like the world outside could wait.

Only a retired man could succumb to an act such as this but not Jamie, he was a successful medical doctor well known, like some might say "duty before pleasure"

Leah who knew how it always ends decided to let go, for there was no stopping Jamie even though he wouldn't struggle to break free

Jamie got up from the bed dashed into the bathroom where he did a quick bath, Judging by how fast he was moving, it was obvious he was behind time.

He stood before the mirror, fresh from the shower, a white towel resting low on his hips.

Droplets of water traced slow paths down his sculpted chest, catching the light as it highlighted every firm line of muscle.

His shoulders were broad and proud, his arms strong and relaxed at his sides, veins faintly visible beneath warm skin. Steam curled around him like a soft embrace, and he watched his reflection with quiet confidence strength, calm, and undeniable allure wrapped effortlessly in one powerful frame.

"Oh why you making it hard for you to go to work " she said as her eyes moved over him unashamedly , lingering, appreciating, wanting.

"Alright Ms that's enough" Jamie said as he slide towards the wardrobe where he quickly dressed up

He was now standing facing Leah already dressed for duty. A crisp light-blue shirt hugged his frame, neatly tucked into tailored dark trousers, the belt sitting firm at his waist. Over it, his clean white lab coat fell smoothly to his knees, pockets slightly filled with the tools of his calling.

A stethoscope rested around his neck, cool against the fabric, and his polished shoes waited by the door , ready for another long day of healing.

Jamie walked towards Leah gave her a goodbye kiss and then walked out the main door

He stepped out of his front door with quiet authority, keys in hand, coat resting over his arm. The morning light caught the clean lines of his shirt stretched across his shoulders, his jaw freshly shaved, his presence effortlessly commanding.

As he walked toward the elevator, his steps were calm and measured , the confidence of a man who saves lives without needing to say it. When the doors slid open, he stepped in, composed and focused, already carrying the weight of the day with undeniable strength.

The elevator doors closed behind him, city lights reflecting off his crisp blue shirt and tailored trousers. He stepped onto the parking level, each stride confident, hands sliding into pockets as he approached his car. Lights flashed, the engine purred, and he drove off , composed, steady, impossible to ignore.

Jamie soon pulled up at St. Aurelius Metropolitan Medical Center

Rising high in New York City, St. Aurelius is a massive glass-and-steel hospital that takes up an entire city block. ambulances move in constant urgency.

Inside, it feels like a city of its own, long corridors, fast-moving elevators, and floors filled with advanced medical tech, operating rooms, and research labs. The upper levels are sleek and modern, but the lower floors are quieter, more restricted, and filled with rumors.

It's known as a place where miracles happen… but also where secrets are kept.

Jamie stepped out of his car and walked toward the hospital, his movements calm but purposeful.

The entrance was tall and brightly lit, its glass doors sliding open to reveal a clean, polished lobby. Inside, the air smelled faintly of antiseptic, and soft echoes of voices and footsteps filled the space. A sleek reception desk stood ahead, surrounded by waiting chairs and tense, quiet faces.

Without hesitating, Jamie stepped inside.

"Morning sir" Jamie who was focused on the candy crush game he was playing slightly brought his head up, and behold it was a familiar face he knows

"Morning" doctor he stammers . Judging by the way Jamie stressed the word Doctor it was obvious he had already forgotten his name

"Aaron" says the young man standing in front of him

"Aaron yeah, how was your night

"My night was" Aaron was cut short by Jamie with another question without giving him an opportunity to answer the first

"What do you have for me, I'm hoping all good news

"I think I have few sir, I have some good news regarding Mr. Tyler Woods in bed 5. His fever has resolved overnight, and his vital signs are now stable. His white blood cell count has also dropped toward normal, and he's responding well to the antibiotics. He was able to eat this morning and reports less pain.

"Good"

"And also our patient in room 3 is improving. Her blood pressure has stabilized, and she's breathing comfortably without oxygen support now. She also slept well overnight.

"You see , that's the type of results you get When you're under DocJamie" he brags

Aaron on the other hand only let out a smile as he follows Jamie behind who was already heading towards the Wardrooms

They got to Room 1 and as they both walked in, the patient who was lying down who appears to be in his 70s try getting up so Aaron rush to aid him

"Jamie" ? He said

"No it's Aaron I'm an intern"

"An intern!"? The aged man said with a loud voice

"Do I look like a test subject to you or what" he added

"Aaron wasn't offended by his words he only exhaled and took a step away from the man

Jamie walked up to the man and the moment he sees Jamie it was almost as if he was injected by something magical, he was suddenly filled with life.

"How are we doing today" Jamie asked.

"Doing great, you want me to Jump"? He replied back with excitement.

"Woah woah"! Not yet I think all you need to do now is to rest a bit more, okay

"Okay Doc, whatever you say"

"Good" Jamie proceeds to exit the room and as he does Aaron followed behind.

They were both now standing outside the room

"A piece of advice hmmmm" Jamie snaped his finger constantly trying to remember Aaron's name again

"It's Aaron sir'

"Oh yeah, word of advice never tell a patient that you're an intern, be confident and now if you excuse me, I've gat a key to the city to collect. He began walking towards the entrance

after Jamie walked out the hospital before he got to his car packed at the garage, he received a call

"someone's Late" the caller

"five minutes and I'll be there" Jamie said

"better hurry, the key ain't receiving itself"

The streets of New York City seemed to open for him.

Jamie drove faster than usual, not reckless, just unwilling to be late. The city blurred past in flashes of yellow taxis and turning heads.

Today mattered.

As he neared City Hall, the crowd came into view lined behind barricades, waiting.

He pulled up.

For a second, everything held still.

Then, recognition.

"That's him"

The ripple spread fast. Phones lifted. Voices rose, not wild, but filled with something deeper respect.

He stepped out of the car.

And suddenly, he wasn't just a name. He was real

To them, he wasn't just famous.

He was proof.

He walked forward, the noise softening into focus, every eye on him.

Inside, he felt the weight of it, the long nights, the lives he carried with him.

But he didn't stop.

Step by step, he moved toward the waiting crowd, toward the moment.

I made it… for them.

The steps of City Hall stood ahead, cameras waiting, the crowd hushed as he approached.

The mayor stepped forward. "Dr. Jamie we've been waiting.

They shook hands, and he was guided to the front.

"Today, in New York City, we honor a man who never stepped away when it mattered most... someone who put others first, a perfect example for the phrase "duty before pleasure"

The words echoed, but his focus drifted to faces in the crowd. A nurse. A former patient. People who knew the real story.

Applause began to rise.

Then the box opened.

The key caught the light.

"On behalf of the people of New York City, we present you with the Key to the City."

He stepped forward and took it.

The crowd erupted.

But in his hands, it felt heavy. Quiet.

He looked up.

Now, it was his turn

Thank you, Mr. Mayor, and thank you to everyone here today.

Receiving the key to this city is more than an honor, it's a reminder of where I come from, and the people who shaped me. This city raised me, challenged me, and believed in me long before I believed in myself.

I accept this not just for what I've done, but for what we've done together. Every success of mine carries a piece of this community in it.

I promise to keep giving back, to keep showing up, and to keep making you proud.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

After Jamie's speech, the crowd bursts into applause. The mayor shakes his hand as photographers capture the moment. A few key guests come up to congratulate him, and the event gradually shifts into a relaxed reception where Jamie greets people and takes in the celebration.

And Just as the Mayor was about walking away, one of the guard armed with gun brought it out and fire a shot at him

The moment of celebration was immediately turned into something else as the crowd began to run to safety, everywhere became rowdy

The Mayor on the other hand was caught by Jamie before he could fall to the ground, Jamie quickly called for help as few security came to his aid while the Guard who fired the shot was held down, stripped of his weapons and taken away for investigation

The ambulance didn't take long. It pushed through the gathered crowd with urgency, lights flashing, forcing a path where there was none. Paramedics jumped out before the vehicle had fully stopped, already assessing the situation, their movements quick and practiced.

Jamie didn't hesitate.

Still in his formal clothes, the weight of the ceremony forgotten, he dropped to his knees beside the mayor. His training took over instantly, steady hands, focused eyes. He called out clear instructions, helping the paramedics stabilize the wound, applying pressure where needed, keeping the mayor conscious.

"Stay with me," Jamie urged, his voice calm but firm.

When the stretcher came out, Jamie helped lift him carefully, coordinating with the paramedics. There was no room for panic now, only precision. He climbed into the back of the ambulance without waiting to be asked.

Inside, everything moved fast. Monitors beeped, oxygen was administered, and Jamie worked alongside the team, updating them quickly on the mayor's condition, anticipating what they needed next.

As the ambulance sped toward the hospital, sirens wailing into the distance, Jamie stayed locked in, focused, determined.

This wasn't about the ceremony anymore.

It was about saving a life.

Jamie hands the mayor over to the emergency team immediately after arriving.

Doctor Aaron quickly took over. stabilizing him, giving oxygen and IV fluids, and trying to control the bleeding.

He is rushed for scans and possible surgery, while Jamie was still in charge controlling everything they do.

Afterwards the Mayor was moved to the surgery room for surgery Jamie was about entering the surgery room with Aaron following behind

Jamie stopped suddenly which made Aaron almost bumping into him, he turned facing Aaron

"You can quit with the act, I don't have to smell to fishout a rat, I know one when I see one" Jamie said with seriousness in his tone now sounding entirely different than before

"What sir...." Aaron stammers

"Detective, right"?

Aaron was surprised as to how Jamie could figure that out

"Oh don't be surprise, you don't think i believe the fake documents you brought or the lies of your university days as a medical students"

"Oh common I did worse than that" Jamie said with a devilish look on his face leaving Aaron more and more confused

"So my suspension was correct after all"? Aaron said as he brought out his phone from behind him, he appears to have recorded their entire conversation.

"So much for a city doctor" he adds

"Haha haaaaa" Aaron laughed out maniacally

And he began to chant

"Forget and fade. Be unmade."

And immediately he said this words Aaron fell to the ground where he was unconscious for just few seconds, and then he stood right back.

"What are we waiting for, we have a patient to operate on" Aaron said

"Yes sir" Aaron followed Jamie inside the room

It appears that his memory has been wiped.
