Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Birthday Party

By the edge of a serene lake, a magnificent mansion gleamed softly, shining like the moon against the midnight sky.

I stood on the balcony of my room, breathing in the cool air.

This might be the best day of my life.

"Arthur, where are you?" a voice called from outside.

"Coming, Mother."

I opened the door, and there she was—beautiful as ever, smiling warmly at me.

"What are you doing alone in your room? It's your birthday party. Come down, everyone is waiting."

"I was just getting ready. I'm done now. Let's go."

We walked downstairs together.

The hall was filled with guests, music, and laughter. My father, a well-known businessman, greeted people with his usual charm. My elder and younger brothers were entertaining their friends, both of them already comfortable in the spotlight.

Seeing everyone so lively and joyful made my heart feel light.

I hope it always stays like this.

"Attention, everyone!" my father announced. "Today is my second son's sixteenth birthday. Thank you for coming. We'll cut the cake in a few few minutes—please enjoy yourselves."

People clapped, and the party burst back to life.

Mother nudged me toward a group of guests, insisting I greet them. After a while, I slipped away and found my friends.

"Happy birthday, Arthur!" they said one by one.

"Thanks," I replied with a grin.

"Don't forget about our special party tomorrow," Tedd reminded me.

"Yeah, we're counting on you," Rachel added.

"Don't worry. We'll have a blast," I assured them.

Then my elder brother called me over to introduce me to his friends. My younger brother did the same a few minutes later. Everyone wished me well, and despite being shy, I appreciated their kindness.

Eventually, the moment came to cut the cake.

With everyone gathered around, I gave a short, awkward speech—public speaking was never my strength. Still, people clapped kindly, and the celebration continued late into the night.

2:30 AM

"The party's over. Thank you for coming!" Father said as the last guests left.

I exhaled deeply.

Finally, I can rest.

Because of my parents, I had to meet so many people today. I really hated socializing… but Father insisted it would help when I joined the family business someday.

Whatever. I'm exhausted.

---

Thud… Thud… Thud…

"Huh?"

I opened my eyes. The clock read 4:00 AM.

"What is that sound? Who's awake at this hour?"

Still half-asleep, I got up and opened the door.

A bloody hand shot forward.

"Ah—!"

It clamped over my mouth.

"Shhh… Young Master. It's me, Charlie," a whisper said. "Don't make a sound. Come with me."

Charlie—the steward who handled most of Father's affairs.

But why… why was he covered in blood?

Is he betraying us? Kidnapping me!?

He dragged me down the corridor. I struggled, but his grip was shockingly strong.

My eyes darted around, searching for Father, for Mother—anyone.

Then I froze.

There, on the stairs…

Blood. A trail of blood leading downward.
