When the first dungeon gate appeared, so did the first monster. Millions of people died before the first esper appeared. Wielding great powers, espers managed to defeat the monsters and were crowned the heroes of the world. However there is always a limit. Whenever an esper uses too much of their gift, the higher the chance they fall into a rampage. Once praised as saviors, espers become the very monsters the humans have learned to fear. And when the first esper fell into a rampage, the first guide appeared. The savior of the saviors. The only ones who are capable of calming the rage within an esper. This is now the new world. *** Mercy is a luxury. Living in a poor sewage city, it's a sentence that has been engraved into Rancid's forehead. Between a mother that hates him and a brother that is slowly withering away from sickness, Rancid doesn't know the word mercy. Or even luxury for that matter. However when a group of espers put up camp nearby, his already hard life gets even worse. Rancid isn't lucky enough to awaken as an esper or even a guide. Instead he gets possessed by a monster.
