Chapter 1 - Detective Gideon

Detective Gideon walked into his office, dropped his jacket on the desk before sitting down. Beside him was Clara, his colleague, who was appointed to him by his superior to partake in the current investigation that was linked to a recent bank robbery case that led to the death of two people.

Clara swiftly turned as she noticed Gideon's presence. "Thank goodness you are back. I wanted to share something impactful with you about the recent findings I did concerning the case."

Gideon stood from the chair he was seated in and walked up to Clara. "What is it you have discovered?"

Clara sharply pointed her fingers to a board hung on the wall, pinned with different pictures of scenes that had occurred concerning the investigation, including pictures from the CCTV cameras, and the victims who had been conflicted, which could serve as clues that would lead them to the perpetrators.

Gideon gazed at the picture shown to him before shifting his gaze back to her. "Okay I've seen this; it's been here for two weeks now. What exactly do you want to show me or perhaps want me to understand?"

Clara then desperately stepped closer to the board then placed her fingers to a specific picture pinned on it. "Look deeply into this, Detective Gideon. Do you notice anything awkward in this footage?"

Gideon sighed. Then step forward and pull the picture from the board. "What exactly are you trying to show me here? Did you forget we have been in this investigation for two weeks now, and I have spent every night going through every footage on this board. I need something new that could give a clear lead on what we are looking for."

"Yes detective, I know," Clara replied, desperate, then used her fingers to poke a specific part of the picture Gideon was holding. "Sir, look at this. On the side of the man's hands, you can see a tattoo, right?"

After Gideon noticed this, a wave of realisation swept over him. And just then, Clara's voice cut in again. "Sir, what do you think? Do you have a clue now?"

Gideon's eyes widened in horror as he gently shifted it to Clara. "It's them, the Black Bull cartels. They are behind this."

Gideon's face went ashen as he spoke. And Clara shook her head in agreement before speaking. "Exactly sir, the black Bull cartels are behind the recent robbery that happened, and for our own good, sir, I beg you to stay quiet and let's gently withdraw from this case, deeming it as void."

Out of anger Gideon slammed his hand on the desk. "No, why should we do such a thing? We swore to protect this city with our lives, and we are going to keep up to our words and do all it takes to make sure it is safe, do you understand?"

"Sir i understand, but you well know who the black Bull cartels are. This is a death trap for us. It's just a matter of time before they get to us and kill us if we don't withdraw. They are strong and intimidating. Even with the mutant chemical neutralisation we have in our possession, we still can't fight them all." Clara begged for Gideon to understand what she was trying to say, but he refused.

Fifteen years ago, something catastrophic happened that caused humans to mutate. It all happened when a private organisation was involved in some sort of scientific experiment to create a self evolving cell that could help humans who have lost their body parts probably from war or accident to grow it back effortlessly.

Apart from that, the organisation claimed that the discovery could lead to a lot of health and medical breakthroughs.

This experiment was not only sponsored by the government but was also trusted for the good and betterment it would bring to human existence. But something went wrong, and a blast occurred. The chemical hazard spread across the city and affected some people, which led to deformation, and not only that, it also granted them supernatural abilities.

And over the years, after this incident happened, those who went through the mutations went bad; some resulted in hurting people, while some used the powers for crime such as robbery, intimidating other people and a lot more horrible things.

It was a duty for the police to get hold of those people who are impacted by the pollution of the chemical to keep them locked up and inject them with the mutant neutraliser, which will make them shift back to their forms and become human again.

What Clara was trying to make Gideon, her colleague, understand was that if he proceeds with the investigation involving the Black Bull cartels, which have high numbers of mutants, it will become a death mission for them. The cartel of the Black Bull will find them and kill them. And whereas no one had ever tracked their trails and succeeded.

That specific group of thugs is a big problem for the city. They strike with perfection and leave no traces.

After a deep breath, Gideon scooped up the rest of the evidence he needed, together with the picture, and put it in his bag. Just as he was about to walk out of the office, Clara's voice cut in. "Detective Gideon, you can't do this alone. Please, you have to wait a bit so we can look for a more strategic way to take those guys down."

"It's obvious you are afraid of death, Clara." Gideon shook his head disappointedly. "Don't worry, I don't even need you in this; I will get the job done myself."

"Detective Gideon, I…" Before Clara could finish what she was saying, Gideon shut the door on her and walked away.

She sighed, then placed her hands on her forehead before shaking it. "He has no chances of survival in this; the Black Bull cartels are dangerous. Countless officers had tried to get hold of them but failed, leading many of our men to their early graves." Clara then walked to a chair and sat. "Though I warned him, he's on his own now."

Gideon held his bag, which contained the evidence he needed to track down the black Bull cartels and finally bring them to justice. He got to his car and drove to his apartment. After bringing out everything he had put in his bag, he arranged them on the desk in his living room, staring at them.
