The screech of brakes, the metallic crash, and the shattering of glass were the last things I remembered. Everything went black in an instant. When I opened my eyes, I was no longer in the city I knew. The air smelled of damp earth and forest, and a strange sky, dyed a deeper shade of blue than usual, stretched above me.
I sat up with difficulty, my mind still dazed. In front of me, a lake of crystal-clear waters reflected every detail with perfect clarity. And what I saw… was not human.
My reflection stared back at me: skin pale as the moon, dark eyes with an unnatural gleam, and upon my forehead, a pair of twisted horns sprouting like black branches. My body was cloaked in a dark mantle, and my hands… elegant, yet sharp, like claws hidden beneath the skin.
—What… what the hell? —I muttered, raising a hand to my face.
The water showed me completely: the silhouette was not unfamiliar. That face, those horns, that overwhelming aura… I had seen it before, in a manga, in the world of Sousou no Frieren. It was Macht, the Golden, one of the most powerful demons to ever exist.
A chill ran down my spine. How could this be possible? Had I reincarnated into the body of a monster? And into Macht, of all beings?
I had no time to process it. A presence rose behind me, like an invisible weight pressing down on my shoulders. I turned my head and saw an old man with a white beard and a worn robe, holding a staff that radiated magical energy. His eyes were so sharp they seemed to pierce through me.
—So you've awakened… demon —he spat with a hoarse voice.
—What? I'm not—
I couldn't finish. The old man raised his staff, and a crimson beam of light shot toward me. I barely reacted; my arms moved instinctively, and a golden spark burst from my hands. The ray deflected, striking a nearby tree, which instantly turned into pure gold, gleaming under the sun.
I froze. I had used Macht's spell, Diagoldze, without even thinking.
The old man looked at me with a mix of fury and fear.—You are… a curse! —he roared, and in the blink of an eye, unleashed another attack, far stronger than the last.
The impact hit me head-on. Pain coursed through every fiber of my body, the world spinning as darkness swallowed me whole. Before I lost consciousness, the last thing I saw was the old man approaching, staff raised high, ready to finish me off.
