Synopsis
In a world where every awakened person receives a Path that determines how they can grow, Cael Veyron awakens with something that should not exist. UNCHOSEN. No affinity. No ability. No clear direction. The academy classifies his Path as Incomplete, leaving Cael without a specialization and with fewer opportunities than the students around him. But Cael soon discovers something the academy cannot see. His Path is not empty. It is waiting. Every meaningful decision he makes, every skill he chooses to pursue, every risk he accepts, and every possibility he abandons slowly shapes what Unchosen can become. Unlike everyone else, Cael was never given a road to follow. He has to build one himself. At first, that freedom seems like an advantage. Then he learns the price. Every true choice strengthens one future while closing another. Every new direction demands commitment. And a wrong decision may not simply cost him a battle. It may permanently change what he is capable of becoming. While ancient records begin revealing that the modern understanding of Paths may be incomplete, Cael is forced to confront a question far more dangerous than how to become stronger. If every Path exists to decide how a person should grow... why was his left unchosen?

Chapter 1 - BAB 1: Hasil Kosong

Cael Veyron had spent the last three weeks telling everyone that he did not care what Path he awakened. It had sounded reasonable when Awakening Day was still weeks away. Standing inside Aurelion Academy's crowded Awakening Hall, it sounded considerably less convincing.

"You're doing it again."

Cael looked sideways. Tomas Renn stood beside him near the rear of the waiting area, rubbing both palms against his trousers while pretending he was not nervous.

"Doing what?"

"Thinking so hard your face forgets how to move."

"My face is moving."

"Barely."

Cael ignored him and looked toward the center of the hall. Rows of wooden chairs filled most of the room, though few students seemed capable of sitting still. Academy clerks moved between two long tables near the platform, collecting registration cards and recording each result in thick ledgers. At the center stood the Path Resonance Pillar.

Cael had seen it countless times during his years at the academy. It simply looked different when his own name was somewhere on the list. The pale crystal column rose nearly three times his height, wrapped at intervals by bands of dark metal. Thin channels ran through its surface, glowing whenever a student placed a hand against the assessment plate. Then came the result.

A Path. Something the academy could train, employers could understand, and families could plan around. Tomas cleared his throat. "So what do you want?"

Cael glanced at him. "You know that's not a simple question."

"I asked what Path you want. Not where you plan to be thirty years from now."

"A combat Path would be useful. Exploration wouldn't be bad either. Research has good academy placement, and Trade Paths usually lead to stable work."

Tomas stared at him.

"What?"

"You somehow made Awakening sound like choosing between administrative forms."

"I'm being practical."

"You're avoiding the question."

Cael opened his mouth, then stopped. Tomas pointed at him. "There. That."

"Worry about your own result."

"I already know what I want."

"A Path that lets you sleep until noon?"

"That would be Elite quality."

Cael laughed. Tomas was joking, but his hands had started moving against his trousers again.

"You're nervous."

"No."

"You've been wiping your hands for five minutes."

Tomas stopped immediately. "That proves nothing."

"It proves your palms are sweating."

The voice came from behind them. Lyra Solenne stood a few steps away with her registration card in one hand. Her dark hair had been tied back neatly that morning, although one loose strand had already escaped near her temple. Tomas looked down at his hands. "Traitorous things."

Lyra turned to Cael. "You're not much better."

"I haven't wiped mine on my clothes."

"No. You've been staring at the Pillar like it owes you money."

"That would make this easier."

She laughed once before a clerk near the front raised a clipboard.

"Lyra Solenne."

The humor vanished from her expression. Tomas lifted one hand. "Good luck." Lyra started forward, then realized she had somehow extended her registration card toward Tomas instead of taking it with her.

He looked at the card, then at her.

"Very composed."

"Quiet."

She took it back and headed toward the platform. Cael had known Lyra for nearly two years through the academy's general courses. They were not close, but they had shared enough classes for him to know she rarely showed uncertainty in front of other people. Apparently Awakening Day was not going to change that.

An instructor directed her to the Pillar. Lyra placed her palm against the crystal, and pale light climbed through the engraved channels. Words appeared above the assessment plate.

PATH: AETHER RESONANT

QUALITY: RARE

Whispers moved through the nearest rows. One instructor looked up more sharply while another clerk immediately began writing.

"That fits," Tomas murmured.

Cael nodded. Aether Resonant Paths were associated with sensing and fine control. Lyra would probably be assigned to Resonance Studies before lunch, while half the students in the hall were still trying to understand what their own results meant. Useful. Clear. Easy to place.

Lyra returned to the waiting area with her expression under control, although the tension had disappeared from her shoulders. A few names later, Darian Vale stepped forward. Darian had trained with a sword longer than most students in their year. Half the class had spent the last month guessing what kind of martial Path he would receive, and Darian had spent the same month ignoring them.

His hand touched the Pillar.

PATH: EDGEBOUND

QUALITY: ELITE

The reaction was stronger this time. Tomas gave a low whistle. "That's unfortunate."

"For who?"

"Anyone who has to spar with him."

Darian stepped away from the Pillar without much reaction. Somehow, that made the result feel even more appropriate. Two more students were called before Cael. One awakened Forgehand, Uncommon quality, and laughed because his father owned a smithy in the Artisan District. Another received the Common mobility Path Fleet Step, prompting his mother in the gallery to applaud louder than anyone had for Darian.

Cael found himself smiling at that. Most Paths were not Rare or Elite. They did not need to be. Something useful was enough.

His mother had already calculated next term's expenses twice, both times assuming his Awakening would place him into a specialization track with an ordinary student stipend. Cael had teased her for planning ahead. Now he was doing exactly the same thing.

"Cael Veyron."

His stomach tightened. Beside him, Tomas bumped his shoulder. "Try not to break it." Cael gave him a flat look. "You've known me too long."

"That sounded almost emotional."

Cael walked away before Tomas could continue. The platform was only a short distance from the waiting rows, but he noticed more of the room now that everyone else was behind him. A clerk turned a page. Someone near the gallery dropped a registration card and swore quietly while picking it up. The Pillar's low hum grew clearer with every step.

"Registration card."

Cael handed it to the instructor beside the platform. The man checked his name before pointing to the assessment plate. "You've done resonance exercises before?"

"Only the practice version."

"Same principle. Don't force anything. The Pillar does the work."

Cael placed his palm against the crystal. It was colder than he expected. For the first second, nothing happened. Then pressure spread beneath his sternum, deeper than anything he had experienced during ordinary Aether exercises. It was not painful. It felt as though something inside him had opened and was waiting to settle into place.

Cael held still. Martial would work. Exploration would work.

Research could work. Trade would work. Anything with a direction.

The pressure shifted. For one strange instant, Cael had the impression that something was searching inside him. Then it stopped.

His brow tightened. The Pillar hummed louder as light climbed through the first engraved channel, then the second. One of the instructors at the recording table raised his head. The first line appeared.

PATH: UNCHOSEN

Cael stared at it. He had never heard the name before. The next line formed more slowly.

CLASSIFICATION: INCOMPLETE

A few conversations behind him stopped. Then came two more lines.

INITIAL AFFINITY: NONE DETECTED

PRIMARY ABILITY: NONE DETECTED

Cael read the display again. Nothing changed.

"What is that?" someone whispered behind him.

"I don't know."

The instructor beside Cael frowned. "Don't move yet."

"I wasn't planning to."

The man looked toward the recording table. "Run it again." A clerk reached beneath the control panel. Click.

The dark bands around the Pillar dimmed, then brightened again. The pressure returned beneath Cael's sternum, and for half a second he expected the result to change. It did not.

PATH: UNCHOSEN

CLASSIFICATION: INCOMPLETE

INITIAL AFFINITY: NONE DETECTED

PRIMARY ABILITY: NONE DETECTED

The whispers returned, quieter this time. Cael barely heard them. Common still meant something. A Common Path had instructors, training material, and career routes.

Incomplete meant the academy did not even know where to put him. His thoughts went to the placement system first. Then the scholarship review.

Then his mother sitting at the kitchen table with a stack of expense notes she had insisted were "only rough calculations." For the first time that morning, Cael stopped thinking about what Path he wanted. He started wondering what happened if he had no usable one at all.

"Has that happened before?" someone asked.

"Quiet, please," an instructor said.

Cael finally looked away from the display. Tomas had stood up. The humor had disappeared from his face. Lyra was staring at the result rather than at Cael. Darian was doing the same, his expression less mocking than irritated, as though the Pillar itself had made a technical mistake.

Cael looked back at the instructor.

"What does Incomplete mean?"

The man hesitated. That bothered Cael more than the whispers.

"It means the Pillar couldn't identify a complete developmental structure."

"Is something wrong with my Soul?"

"We don't know that."

Another instructor approached from the recording table.

"We'll schedule a secondary assessment. Until then, don't attempt specialized Aether training without supervision."

Cael glanced at the four lines again. "No affinity. No ability."

"For now," the second instructor said.

Cael looked at him.

"We have a classification," the man continued. "We don't have an explanation."

A clerk wrote several notes beside Cael's name.

"You'll report to student reassignment after the ceremony. Second floor, administrative wing."

Cael nodded. There was nothing else to ask that anyone here seemed capable of answering. He removed his hand from the crystal. The light faded, and the display disappeared.

The clerk lowered her eyes to the list and called the next name. Another student stepped forward. The ceremony continued.

Cael had almost reached Tomas when something shifted inside his chest. He stopped. There was no sound, no flash of light, and nothing appeared above the Pillar. The meaning simply arrived, impossibly clear.

Your Path has not been chosen.

Cael looked back at the crystal. Not chosen. That was not the same thing as having none.
