Chapter 1 - Fodder Character

The blue spark wasn't just a flash; it was a tear in reality. When Kaelen opened his eyes, the smell of digital ozone was replaced by the stinging scent of sea salt and horse manure. He looked at his reflection in a rain puddle. He wasn't a gamer anymore; he was a "Background Fodder" NPC in Devas of Creation, wearing a dirty tunic and carrying a rusted shortsword.

"Whoa, a real person?" a voice boomed.

Kaelen turned to see Soren, the Player. Soren looked like a classic hero, but his eyes were wide with a manic, terrifying excitement.

"I'm Kaelen," he said, trying to steady his breath. "I know this game. I've played it sixty-seven times. Stick with me, Soren. I'll show you how to beat the bosses and we can both get home."

The adventure began like a dream. They traveled from the Sun-Drenched Plains to the Frozen Peaks of Oros. Kaelen acted as the ultimate guide, pointing out hidden chests and secret weaknesses of every beast.

"See that? If we hit the Golem's core now, we save the village," Kaelen shouted during their third month.

But Soren didn't hit the core. He waited until the Golem crushed the village tavern, then killed the monster to collect the "Massacre Bonus" XP.

"Why did you do that?!" Kaelen screamed, looking at the ruins.

"They're just pixels, Kaelen," Soren laughed, his armor now stained with a dark, corrupt purple mist. "The faster they die, the faster I level up. I'm the protagonist. I do what I want."

The "Hero" became a plague. Soren slaughtered quest-givers for their gold and burned forests just to see the physics engine work. When Kaelen finally tried to draw his blade to stop the madness, Soren just smirked.

"You're an item, Kaelen. Back in the box."

A screen flashed: [Inventory Capture Initiated]. Kaelen's body dissolved into light, trapped in a cold, dark void. He could only watch through a tiny window of static as Soren reached the Final Boss, arrogant and alone. Soren had killed all the allies he needed to win.

The Final Boss didn't just kill Soren; it broke the world. As the sky turned black and the ground beneath Oakhaven began to delete itself, Kaelen felt his soul tearing apart.

"I should have killed him," Kaelen thought, his vision fading to white. "I should have ended it the moment we met."

FLASH.

The smell of sea salt returned. The sound of a bustling port filled his ears. Kaelen gasped, falling off a wooden crate. He looked at his hands—dirty linen sleeves, calloused palms.

"Hey! You there!"

Kaelen froze. He knew that voice. He looked up and saw Soren standing there, wearing his level 1 premium armor, looking around with that same "confused" hero expression. It was Day 1. The Reset had happened.

"You're a real person, aren't you?" Soren asked, walking closer.

Kaelen's hand drifted to the rusted dagger at his belt. His heart was a drum of pure ice. "Yeah," Kaelen whispered, his eyes narrowing. "I'm real."
