Using her knowledge of psychology and shadow-strategy, she navigates a court of poison and politics. By day, she is the "Ugly" Princess; by night, she is Ae, a masked revolutionary changing the empire’s culture through forbidden books. Chapter 1 - Prologue

I stare in the window, rain falling continuously, the clouds covering the sun making it look dark and gloomy.

Clang!

A loud noise came in front of a class that immediately caught her attention. her earthy brown eyes; very defined — glances at the front. A man with glasses appeared, his clothes looking all formal. Students stand up.

"Good afternoon, Sir James!" they shouted.

"Good afternoon, everyone. I just came to remind you the passing of the project is due tomorrow, and class is dismissed due to bad weather. Don't forget to clean." James said and left immediately.

"Why's he in a hurry, weird.." the girl beside me mumbled, I looked at her. We exchanged glances.

"Ah! Aenia, are you cleaning today?" she spoke enthusiastically.

"No" I said as i fix my stuff.

"Really? Let's go to the mall then!" She said as she also fixed her stuff.

"I can't, I have something to do" I stood up and carried my bag.

"eh~ come on! Carlos will be joining us!" she grabbed my hand and shake her body, I sighed,

"sorry, Jane. I can't, I'm really busy." I said bluntly and she let go,

"Fine!" Jane said and left out a pout on her face.

"I'll just.. make it next time." I spoke and left immediately.

As I was walking in the hallway, a guy was rushing and his shoulder bumped into me, making a piece of paper fall. I picked it up and read "Anri" , an unfinished word that crosses over it a lot of times.

[This must be a scratch.]

I looked down to see if there's more in it, "Where are you?" was written.

"where are you..?" I mumbled, I looked back and the guy was nowhere to be sighted anymore.

"meh.." I put the paper in my bag and then proceeded to go home.

[It's raining pretty hard today.]

I got into a bus and finally sat down. I looked into a window and saw a weird looking guy — black hair with deep blue eyes that's like an ocean, his lips a bit puffy and pinkish, he looks like a model from a different country.

He looked up and we accidentally met glances, he looked shocked and the bus immediately moved.

"He's a weird guy.." I mumbled.

After some time passed by and I finally reached my house, I was about to go down but the driver suddenly talked.

"Young lady, be careful with what you wish for." The driver said with a serious tone, I got confused, but I disregarded it and went out.

"Aeria! thank god you're here, come help your mother!" My mom, Liana, shouted from inside the house.

"What's wrong?" I took off my shoes and enter the house,

"She doesn't understand the documents that were given to her, plus she's cooking."

Vienna said as she leaned towards the wall

"Then why didn't you help her?" I glared at her,

"I did help, I gave her the documents." She walked away looking annoyed,

"Mom!" Vienna yelled—

"What?!" My mom immediately replied,

"Aenia doesn't want to-" Vienna run towards the kitchen.

"NO! I WILL HELP!" I shouted before Vienna finished with her words

[that damn butthead]

I rushed towards the kitchen and saw Vienna make that weird ass face. I sat down on the chair, looking around and saw my mom cooking some food, and the papers on the table. Vienna was holding some papers and arranging them.

"So, what am I gonna do?" I stare at my mom,

"You cook, I'll also arrange the papers" My mom walked towards the table, I stood up and headed to the stove to see what she was cooking. I smelled the food and taste it,

[It lacks flavor]

I added some spices and then after cooking, I put the soup into a big bowl and served it to them

"Here you go." I put the bowl in the table,

"What's that paper anyway?" I said as i stare at them seriously.

"It's the office's documents, my presentation is near so i'm fixing some stuff. This is why you should study hard and be a Doctor." She spoke as she fixed the papers.

"Mom, about that.. I want to change my strand. I want to pursue Psychology.." I said feeling a bit nervous, I stared down at the soup.

"I told you, you will pursue being a Doctor!" She slammed the paper on the table making me and Vienna flinch,

"I can't, it's too hard for me.." I mumbled and continue to stare at the soup,

"Nothing is impossible, you're just saying that because you're feeling lazy!" She spoke with the feeling of frustration.

"Mom.." Vienna said gently trying to calm our mom,

"I see.." I said, my voice barely hearable.

I sat down beside Vienna and started eating, the room was quiet, it was suffocating.

"Sis, this is delicious..!" Vienna looked at me trying to break the silence, but it started feeling awkward.

"Thanks.." I said and stand up, I putted the plates in the sink and went to the bedroom.

That night, I wept in my bed, staring at the plain white ceiling; hands on my chest as I sat.

"O' dear gods, please remove the pain I ought to feel as I cannot handle it further—"

I begged repeatedly.

"Please, if I can not achieve the dream I have desired for a long time — end this suffering.."

After a few hours of crying and begging, I fell asleep. Morning came, my sister, Vienna, tried waking me up. But I was already far away.

"Hey!"

Vienna yelled as she climbed on her bed to reach Aenia, and when she finally reached her, an unexpected view startled her — a pale skin of Aenia. Vienna's hand met her sister's skin, but instead of warmth, she found a terrible coldness — the touch of someone who would never wake again.

"Mom!"

Vienna yelled horrifiedly, she ran out of their room and clings to her mother's clothes.

"M- Mom! Sister – she– she's cold, she w- won't wake up!"

"What? Look Vie, I'm gonna– ha.."

Vienna cried, her mother stopped with her words and looked at Vienna— terrified, she rushed to their room and checked Aenia.

"Aenia? Sweetie?"

Her mother gently approached the beds, and climbed on Vienna's bed, expecting to scold Vienna for worrying her. But when her eyes fell on Aenia, she froze.

She was lying there peacefully, as if in a gentle sleep, her lips faintly parted, her chest utterly still. For a moment, the mother waited — waited for a breath, a twitch, any sign of life.

Nothing came. Her trembling hand touched the skin, and coldness shattered her hope. A broken cry tore from her throat, she walked down and went to ask for help to bring her daughter down from her bed.
