Chapter 1 - The stranger

Her tired eyes were looking at the night sky. How beautiful it was, full of glittering stars. The sounds of hooting and laughter were reaching her ears, everyone was celebrating the new year.

She looked at her hands, they were colder than the night and she couldn't feel anything. The aftermath of touching cold water for too long.

"I wish I could also go out and enjoy it with them," she sighs.

The plates still needed to be cleaned.

"Oh moon goddess, you are really unfair sometimes. You gave them everything, you could have at least given me a wolf," she pouts, her hands still working.

It's almost 1 PM by the time she finished. Her shoulders were hurting. The cold breeze felt nice.

Winter was her favorite.

"My only wish for this year is to be happier," she prayed with her eyes closed.

A warm light made her open her eyes. Someone has kept a piece of cake with a candle in the kitchen.

She smiled. It's that person, again.

"I don't know who you are, but thank you so much." She ate that cake, it's chocolate flavored. Her favorite one.

She could hear the sounds of other people, she quickly shoved down the rest in her mouth.

"Are you done?" The familiar cold voice made her shiver. She nodded her head.

"Leave then." She didn't need to be told twice.

"Wait," her breath hitched. She didn't want to be in the same place any longer. It's suffocating.

"Who gave you the cake?" Her hands were starting to shake.

"I asked, who gave you the cake?"

"I-I-I don't know. I-I am sorry."

"Mom, my head is hurting. Can you give me some medicine?" It's her younger sister, Ava.

Her mother nodded her head.

"Yes, darling. And you," her voice changed drastically.

"Don't think you'll get away with it. You have no right to be happy. Piece of trash!" With that, she walked away with her daughter.

Amethyst stood there, the momentarily happiness she felt was gone.

She thought that she was used to it but it hurts, every. single. time.

She's her mother, after all.

"Amethyst! Oh no, are you crying?" Someone wrapped their arms around her. She instantly felt better. She quickly hugged her back.

Her tears silently fell from her eyes, she didn't bother stopping them.

Today could have been so much different than this.

"I wish I could throw her away. How can she do this to her elder child? Such a nasty woman!" Vivian was seething.

"I-it's f-fine. S-she ga-ave b-bir-th to me," Amethyst managed to say in between her sobs. Her heart was breaking.

"Still, how can she say that to you on your birthday. I'll talk to her tomorrow."

Vivian was the Alpha's only daughter and her friend.

"No, don't. I feel better now. Happy new year," Amethyst wished Vivian with a big smile and wet lashes.

Vivian's heart was aching for her. She hugged Amethyst again, hiding her own tears.

"Such an innocent child, just because she doesn't have a wolf! How's that fair to her?" She thought.

"Silly, I should wish you. Happy birthday, Amethyst. You are finally 18!"

Amethyst was more scared than happy. She wasn't going to have a mate.

"Thank you."

"Don't be disheartened. Go and sleep." Amethyst left for her room.

It's in the basement. A blanket over the floor, a broken mirror, and a few sets of clothes were all she had.

"What if I find my mate tomorrow and he doesn't like me? I wish it was him." A smile touched her lips.

Evren.

Vivian's brother and the Alpha's only son.

He's the most beautiful person she has ever laid her eyes on.

He looked eternal with his white hair and cold blue eyes that were just like ice.

The night was still young and she didn't feel like sleeping.

"Should I decide which dress I'll wear tomorrow?" She quickly dug out the dresses she had and soon realized that she didn't have many options. And worst part, all of them were old.

"Hmph, I don't feel like celebrating my birthday anymore. It's just another day anyways. I should study for a while." And that's what she did.

The books were her companion for the night. But there was another person.

A very beautiful melody reached her ears. Someone was singing.

She quickly got out, eager to see that person finally. But to her surprise, no one was there.

"Who's singing then?" The voice was slowly fading away. She went back and the melody got closer.

She decided not to fight against it anymore.

It wasn't important to know who it was, what held more significance is that this person has always been there by her side, even though she never met him.

He would be there every time she felt like life wasn't worth living.

So, she did what she has always been doing. She wrote him a letter.

Dear stranger,

Thank you so much for today. I loved the cake and your voice is really beautiful. It made my birthday ten times more special. Even though I would love to meet you someday, I guess you are a little shy. So, I can wait. I hope this year brings you joy, peace, happiness, and lots of laughter. I can't give you anything precious but my prayers will forever be with you.

Thank you, again. I hope the moon goddess makes all of your dreams come true.

Sincerely Yours,

Amethyst.

She added a dried flower she picked from the roadside and kept that on her doorsteps with the letter. She was going to respect his privacy, no more trying to see who it is.

"You are an adult now. You should be wiser," she told herself and started studying again.

She didn't bother thinking about her mother's warning anymore. It did hurt but she knew that thinking about it will hurt her more.

Soon, sleep consumed her.

And it broke with screams.

"Amethyst! Get out right now or I'll break the door."
