Chapter 1 - Beginning.

2024 - December.

Burrton, Kansas, USA.

"I am too lazy for this shit."

Rose muttered while lying down on her bed, she was actually not doing anything at all, but she was thinking very hard.

"I have to ask Sam about it."

Rose jumped down from her bed, then took a black jacket in her hand, then looked at the mirror. Her hair was disheveled, so she perfected her bangs and pushed the extra-long hairs away from her icy blue eyes, and then she smiled several times before heading out.

As she exited the house she was in, you could see huge wheat fields around her, some frozen and some muddy. She was born into the Martin family of Kansas, a farming family by trade.

As she walked out of the house, the cold wind forced her to wear the jacket she brought. She walked towards the machine shed, as a family with the second most land in the town, they have huge machinery, and her best friend Sam will be coming today to look at them.

She walked with an urgency, as she reached the enormous shed, she saw her twin brother was standing there with her father. They were looking worried, and beside them stood a man wearing a jumpsuit with a faded Hank's Agriculture Machine Repair logo.

"Dad, what happened?"

Rose asked as he went ahead, she was concerned because whenever this company arrived before Christmas, they always had to cheap out on their Christmas celebrations.

Seeing no one replying to her, Rose frowned, from afar, she could see all three of them were looking inside the machinery shed, and they were awed with something.

Rose reaching them punched Jack first, then looked inside the shed with a curious gaze. What she saw made her smile unconsciously, there was a person standing on a ladder. He was doing this and that, which didn't make any sense to her at all, he looked like a tiny ant in front of the giant red combine harvester.

"Sam is here."

Rose's smile broadened even more, then she walked inside the shed, the smile never left her lips. As she entered the shed, she could smell diesel in the air, but her whole focus was on the boy who was working tirelessly. From his back, you could tell he was about 180 cm tall and had silky brown hair, he was wearing leather boots and had his jacket wrapped around his waist.

"Sam, do you need any help?"

Rose asked sweetly. Sam turned his head around, and seeing Rose, his stoic face bloomed into a huge smile. His brown hair was covering half of his eyes, so he used the back of his hand to remove the hair from his face, but he still managed to smudge his white face with black grease. His blue eyes looked lustrous and warm.

"Rosie, you came just in time. Can you bring me your hair dryer? I will teach you something fun."

Sam said as soon as he saw Rose, he looked like he was delighted to see her. Rose nodded her head with the same smile she came in with and took two steps back while looking at Sam and ran to get what Sam wanted.

Rose returned with her new hair dryer, her father wanted to stop her, but seeing her running inside, he just shook his head.

"Ah! You brought the new one? I can't touch it for obvious reasons, you have to help me out here. Turn it on and focus from here to here."

Sam looked at the dryer first and stopped because he knows it was her new hair dryer, so he showed his greased-up hand to her and then pointed to where he needed the heat.

*Thomp*

*Thomp*

"See that? Ice—that's why we need to heat it, but be careful, the wires here are linked to the gearbox. See, this thing also answers your last night's question, "

Sam first tapped the steel pipes gently with a small wrench to show her where to heat it, then began to answer a question she asked last night.

Rose was designing a low-energy irrigation water pump, and she has successfully done half her project and was trying to complete it before she applies to university with it, but she seems to be stuck with a very hard problem: the water supply won't increase no matter how much energy she burns after a certain limit. This way the whole purpose of her project will fail, so she had asked Sam for advice on this.

"What do you mean?"

Rose asked while blinking her eyes in astonishment. She calls Sam every night after dinner to discuss machines. Sam was a born genius in machines, he even made several items on his own and got 1586 on the SAT this year, while she only got 1336.

"We are human, no matter how hard we try, we can't win over nature. See this? Ice has formed in the cold weather. It's his nature. Water also has its own nature, you can't just go ahead and try to change its nature. It will always flow from up to down, the deeper you go, the more pressure it creates. The pressure is your friend, and you're fighting it desperately. Sure, the idea you have is good and scientific, but never forget it's called "mother nature" for a reason.

Sam gently guided her, Rose's face went from tilting confusion to a frown, then her eyes went wide with shock. She looked like she got an epiphany. If Sam was not looking at her, she would have run inside her house to check out something.

"Now then, Rosie, focus."

Sam tapped her head very gently with the wrench so that she could come back to earth. Sam was blocking the heat from her dryer with his hand because her mind was distracted. Rose, seeing his hand, bit her tongue slightly and focused on her current job.

After ten more minutes and adjustments, Sam jumped down from the ladder, then looked back with a smile on his face and nodded at David Martin.

"H… He's done?"

The man who came to check on the combine harvester looked at Sam with his mouth agape, the note in his hand dropped on the ground, and you could see the $2200 quotation in the name of Martin's, after a 10% discount.

"Well, we won't be needing your premium services, it seems."

David shrugged his broad shoulders at the jumpsuit guy. He called Hank's Agriculture Machine Repair Company, they said they won't be able to tell the cost on the phone, and you can reject the agent after he quotes the price.

Jack ran inside the shed before David, fist bumped Sam in his chest, and went inside the driver's seat. Jack and Rose, the twins, are childhood friends with Sam, and Sam almost stumbled back with the friendly bump in his chest.

Jack was huge, even though Sam was 180 cm, Jack towers over him, and he plays football at the state level, so there's also that. He was not fat, but there was not a single irrelevant muscle in his body.

Rose held Sam gently as she glared at her brother for bumping him. Rose was also 176 cm, almost as tall as Sam, but she was lean and had curves where they were needed in her body.

*Shhhhhhhk*

*ShhkkkkGrrrrrrrrrrr*

"It has started."

Jack shouted, and with a smile on his face, he leaned outside the door and looked at Sam with a happy face.

"Ahaha, of course it has."

David came with a hearty laugh, he patted Sam on his shoulder. David was also huge, just like his son Jack. The Martin family was famous for their big gene.

"Y...You're Samuel Callahan? Son of the late Engineer Thomas Callahan?"

The Hank's Agriculture Machine Repair Company guy came with an astonished face, he looked at Sam from head to toe. Sam reminds him of this famous engineer who died too early in a car accident.

"That's me."

Sam nodded his head, while you could see Rose was holding his greased hand, she didn't let it go from when she helped him balance the fist bump.

"Now I understand. Here, call me if you need a gig or something to earn some money."

The jumpsuit guy smiled and gave Sam a card. Sam had to look at Rose in her eyes before she blushed and let go of his hand. Sam took the card with a gentle smile, and the repair guy left.

"So Sam, what do you want as compensation? Will my daughter do? Ahaha "

"Daaaaaaad."
