Chapter 1 - Gate of Babylon, Treasury of the King

— — — — — —

"Kazuma-nii, when are you gonna be number one in the guild?!"

"What do you think?"

"Today! It's gotta be today!"

The moment Kazuma Fujita stepped into the Fairy Tail guild hall, he was immediately pounced on by a little kid—Romeo Conbolt, the son of Macao Conbolt.

"Haha~ You kid knew how to talk," Kazuma chuckled, tossing him a stack of cash. "Here—buy yourself some candy."

He handed over 10,000 Jewels.

After all, today marked his 100th completed mission. Sure, that didn't officially make him the number one wizard in the guild—but completing a hundred high-ranked jobs in a single year? Averaging one every three days?

That was a record even the veterans couldn't beat.

"Wow, Kazuma-nii, you're awesome! Thanks!"

Romeo dashed off, grinning from ear to ear. He'd had his eye on a certain magic gadget for months now—but he never had enough money for it. Today, he finally did.

Coincidentally, that gadget cost exactly 10,000 J.

Kazuma strolled up to the bar counter and handed a mission report to the woman behind it.

"Mira, here. Mind processing it quick? I've got another job lined up right after this."

"You really don't take a break, huh? Ever since you joined, my paperwork's doubled," Mirajane teased with a gentle smile as she checked over the documents. Once she confirmed the job was complete, she stamped it and filed it away for Master Makarov to review later.

Kazuma sighed at the voice in his head. Becoming the guild's number one wasn't as simple as grinding missions, apparently.

To truly claim that title, he'd have to beat everyone—for real. The S-Class wizards alone were monsters: Erza, Laxus, Mystogan, Gildarts… and Mira herself, though she wasn't active in battle right now.

Each one of them was terrifying in their own way.

If he kept his distance, he could probably overwhelm them with sheer firepower—his Gate of Babylon (Treasury of the King) could outgun anyone. But in close combat? That'd be a whole other story.

"I'll treat you to dinner later to celebrate, Mira. Order whatever you want."

"I'll remember that, y'know," Mira said with a mischievous smile. "When you actually have time, I'll come collect that dinner."

"Heh, Mira, don't let him fool you," someone called from the side. "Since the day he joined, has he ever had a free moment? The guy's either on a mission or on his way to one."

"At this rate, you'll get that dinner when he's dead."

Just then, a short, white-bearded old man hopped up onto the bar and sat down, glaring at Kazuma.

"Well, if it isn't Master Makarov," Kazuma said with a grin. "You're looking worse than last time. Might be time to hang it up, old man—if you retire early, I can take over sooner."

Kazuma's "system" was what he called his Achievement System—every milestone he hit, gave him a reward.

When he'd first been thrown into this world, it was Makarov who found him and brought him to Fairy Tail, which triggered his first achievement: [Joining a Guild]

The Reward was the Treasure of the King magic.

Then, completing his first mission evolved it into a real Gate of Babylon, granting him access not only to countless weapons—but weapons from other worlds beyond Fairy Tail's.

At ten missions, he unlocked the Ten Streak achievement, which granted a permanent Magic Capacity Buff—a 10% boost per mission completed.

And because it was multiplicative, the stronger his base magic, the crazier the increase got.

Right now, with power close to an S-Class mage, his magic was ten times that of a normal wizard.

"You brat, every word out of your mouth makes me want to hit you," Makarov grumbled. "Retire and let you take over? Don't make me laugh. Even if I did, there are still plenty of S-Class wizards ahead of you."

"Become S-Class first, then we'll talk!"

He snorted and then tossed a sealed request form at Kazuma. "Anyway, quit flapping your gums. I've got a job for you—an arrest mission from one of our allied guilds."

"I'll take it." Kazuma didn't even look at the details before passing it to Mira. "Log it for me and grab the intel, please."

Despite his banter, he actually liked the old man a lot. Makarov had been the first to take him in, and if he was personally handing out a request, Kazuma wasn't about to turn it down.

"Honestly," Mira said, giggling as she worked. "You two are such tsunderes."

As she processed the paperwork, she frowned a little. "Hargeon City, huh? I think Natsu headed there not long ago—said he was chasing some fire dragon."

She shook her head softly. "As if real dragons still exist. He'll probably come back empty-handed again."

Once the mission was officially logged, Kazuma grabbed his gear and headed out. "Seriously, old man, you're getting up there. You should retire soon."

"Get lost, brat! I'm as strong as ever!"

Makarov chased him halfway to the door before his back started aching. Grumbling, he slumped into a chair and rubbed his waist.

"...Hah. Maybe I really am getting old."

He sat there for a moment, staring at the rowdy guild members around him. For a second, he actually wondered if it was time to hand things over.

Then he imagined the chaos these kids would cause without him—and immediately scrapped the idea.

"Yeah, no. Guess I'll hang on a few more years. Otherwise, these little punks would burn the guild down in a week."
