Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Hit and Run

Pit-pat, pit-pat.

"Haah." Isaac looked up at the darkening sky, droplets of water already falling from above.

"Does the rain have to start now, of all times?" he muttered in frustration. Looking around, his colleagues were already making their way, protected by umbrellas that he had forgotten to bring back from home.

He looked at the wet roads, and with a heavy sigh, he started walking. Droplets fell on him with rapidly increasing speed, quickly soaking his coat.

The office parking lot was a little far from the main building where he usually parked his car, so there was no escaping a thorough drenching.

He hurried into the entrance ramp, grateful for the shelter of the basement parking below.

Stopping beside his car, he reached into his coat pocket for his key. Nothing. A frown creased his forehead. He tried his pants pocket, then patted down the breast pocket of his shirt.

"Aghh." He scratched his damp hair in frustration and turned toward the parking entrance, watching the torrential rain fall outside. "Did I forget it on my desk?"

"How much worse can my day get? First that irritating manager, and then..." He started walking back toward the building, punching at the air and muttering about his miserable luck.

He burst out of the basement entrance, taking a quick, deep breath, and then ran. He hoped the cold rain that had already soaked him wouldn't fall on him again.

The downpour was now at its peak, and the sheer volume of water blinded his eyes. "Ahh." He roughly rubbed a wet arm across his face, trying to clear the blurry world.

"PAAAAAA!"

"What..." A deafening horn blast made him stop dead in his tracks. The sound was so loud it felt as if it originated right next to his ear.

"Bang!"

"Aghhhh!" A crushing pain exploded in his arm, instantly spreading through his body as the impact threw him. He felt his arm shatter.

"Thud."

He landed hard, gasping for air. With the corner of his eye, he caught the silhouette of a truck speeding away, showing no care for his life or death.

"Cough..." He coughed up blood, smearing it across his chin. The incessant rain washed the gore from his face almost instantly.

'Why is nobody coming?'

He tried to look around but couldn't. He felt excruciating pain with the slightest movement, so he fixed his gaze in a single direction.

'Is this my end?'

A strange, numb sensation washed over him, a chilling feeling, as if something was lifting him out of his own body. The world grew distant.

"Click."

"Hehe, should I pull the trigger?"

Hearing the playful voice, Isaac tried to open his eyes, but they felt heavy, glued shut.

"No, Jamar, he is a vampire; we have to use blessed gold bullets." Another, colder voice instructed.

"Tch, give me a bullet then. You ruined my fun..." Isaac heard the distinct sound of metal clicking.

Vampire... blessed bullet... He tried to forcefully peel his eyes open, but his body remained frozen, unable to move an inch.

"PAAAAAAAAA!"

A loud train horn blared, followed by the hissing, smoke-releasing sound of an old steam engine.

"Careful, Jamar, he is a high-level vampire; we don't want him to awaken," the colder voice cautioned again.

"Yeah, yeah." Click.

Isaac felt a cold metal barrel press against his forehead. He felt sweat bead on his skin, intensely aware of the slow, metallic sound of the gun being cocked.

Then, suddenly, all the tension and pressure were released from his body.

"Gah."

His eyes snapped wide open. All he could see was a red world and two figures that appeared only as black shadows to his compromised vision.

"He's awake," one muttered and raised a hand. "Quick, Jamar!"

"Hehe. Bang."

"Aghhh!" The bullet missed, sending a spike of intense pain through his ear due to the concussive blast.

In that moment, Isaac caught a glimpse of a blindingly bright light, a flash that registered as pure black to his eyes, and then they both vanished.
