Chapter 1 - Rise of the dead

In the middle of an open field, a field filled with bodies stacked atop each other, lay a young man, a boy with shoulder-length black hair, bronze-tan skin, a toned, muscular body, dressed in plain clothing, a villager, but covered in cuts and dirt.

As the grey skies continue to darken, small droplets of rain begin to fall, making the already dreadful scene even more terrifying.

Slowly, the rain fell upon the boy's face, and he began to stir, awakening with the cold breezes of wind.

Sitting up, Quinn wiped the rain from his face, but as he felt his dirty hands wipe dirt on his face, he looked down to see that his hands were covered in mud and blood.

"w...what?" he asked his sleep, still keeping him from fully registering what was happening

Wiping his hands on his pants, Quinn finally saw that he was sitting on the corpse of a young man with a face filled with reching agony.

"What the..!?" Quinn spoke as he quickly tried to stand up and back away from the body.

As he did, he stumbled back as his foot entered the rotting chest of another corpse.

"No no no....w-wait...wh-What is this!!?" Quinn said, taking in his surroundings, a land covered in rotting corpses

Trying to get away from the corpses, Quinn began running not in any particular direction but trying to find some place slightly normal.

As he ran, he heard the sound of movement followed by groaning. Looking back, he saw a hand sticking up from the pile of corpses, waving around.

"Another person...shit! Hold up, I'm coming," Quinn said, forcing himself to turn around.

Getting to the man, he began moving and pushing bodies away in an attempt to help the person. Once he cleared enough room, the person started moving, but before he could even speak, Quinn saw the truth that there was no person.

A person could not live or move without half of their body missing.

"What the fuck?" Quinn spoke, backing up his confusion at his situation growing.

But before he could try and figure out that these were moving corpses, they began moving, each crawling towards him while attempting to stand.

"Hell no...fuck this!" Quinn said as he began running again, this time looking out for lights or signs that might indicate the presence of people.

As he ran and ran, the dark, rain-filled sky worsened as the sun began to set and the night sky took over. Now running away from the living dead in a land he did not know, in the night, the fear he had been trying to suppress now began to grow.

For what seemed like hours, Quinn ran his feet tired and ready to give out, and his breath heavy and raspy. Reaching the top of a hill, Quinn stopped falling to his knees, his breath labored and his whole body burning in fatigue.

"W...what the hell happened to me?" Quinn asked, looking up into the night sky

Looking behind him, he saw the zombies that had been chasing him were gone, except for a few that followed in the far distance, but still closing in.

Taking another minute, Quinn stood up and began jogging again, still trying to find someone, anyone. As the moon reached the middle of the night sky, Quinn, who was drenched in cold rainwater, tired and hungry, saw lights in the distance.

Pushing himself beyond his limits, Quinn continued step after step, getting closer to the lights until he found himself at a bridge. Now taking slow, tired steps, he arrived at the lights.

Stopping at a large wall, he saw two figures holding lanters looking at him with concern.

"P...please...help," Quinn spoke as he passed out and hell right before the two figures.

...2 days later

"Gahh, my head..." Quinn spoke weakly as he began to awaken

Attempting to sit up, Quinn felt a jolt of pain shoot up his body, causing him to recoil.

"Damn it...I guess running for hours will do that," Quinn sighed, this time slowly leaning against the bed frame.

Looking around, Quinn found himself in a bedroom that was neatly decorated and quite cozy.

"This is the complete opposite of last time...where am I...this room is very medieval,"

Taking the blanket off, Quinn realized that he was completely clean and in fresh clothing.

"Well, it feels good to be clean," he said with a small laugh as he sat up his feet off the bed.

[Host is now awake and in a safe zone]

[Started system introduction]

"A system...seriously, what is going on?" Quinn asked, looking at the floating screen before him

[Advanced Technology System]

[Main Tasks: Eliminate all zombies]

[Main Tasks: Save Humanity]

[Main Tasks: Kill the Zombie Lord]

"So those were zombies that chased me last night..." Quinn sighed as he rested his head in his hands

Looking back up, he was about to ask the system for more information when the door to the room opened and an older man walked in holding a bowl of steaming water with a towel.

"You're awake...Good, I was beginning to worry you had perished," the man spoke as he placed the bowl down at the nightstand.

Taking a look at the man, Quinn saw that he was dressed in a black trench coat and a black top hat and wore gloves as if he were about to go somewhere.

"Were you the one who helped me?" Quinn asked the man

"Yes...well, the guards said you appeared before them and passed out after asking for help," the man spoke as he soaked the towel and passed it to Quinn.

"I see..."

"Now tell me what a young man like you was doing in the in-between with no gear or horse," The older man spoke, taking a seat at a nearby table.
