(Grey)
I was sitting inside a white room akin to that of a mental asylum, staring at a family picture of a father, a mother, and their two children.
The father's face was cut out of the picture; I cut it out myself. The mother had blond hair and dark cyan eyes. The daughter looked to be thirteen years old, with her mother's beautiful blonde hair and jet-black eyes.
Lastly, the son, the oldest of the two siblings…me.
I had my mother's dark cyan eyes and my biological father's black hair.
I stared at it for a while, remembering the happy times I spent with my mother and sister. Every time my eyes fell on my father's silhouette, my mood would sour more than it already was. Every time I would remember how he abandoned us for power, I remembered my mother's sorrow, my sister's tears flowing.
[Hello, young chosen of the Akashic Records.]
A voice echoed through the white room.
[Today is the Ninth of June, and the day your lives would change, for better or for worse.]
The voice added.
[All of you will be teleported to a random place in this hellish continent of ours; some might get teleported to the heart of one of the cities, and some might get teleported to the heart of a death zone. We can't help you, but we'll try. All we can do now is try to tell you how to survive. All of you were given a ring. This ring is a dimensional trophy, in it are food supplies and water to last you at least a year, pulse in each ring is a weapon of your preference.]
I looked at the black and gold ring I wore on my thumb.
[The weapon is of the Uncommon rank. We wish you all a safe return to civilization.]
With that, no sound came from the hidden speaker once again, and the room became silent once again.
Time passed with no sound in the white room. I didn't mind it; my attention was focused solely on the picture of me and my family.
I wanted to spend more time with them. If I weren't chosen by the Akashic records, I would be celebrating my seventeenth birthday with my mother and sister right now.
But in some way, I was glad that I became a chosen. At least now I can protect them in a way. Well, I wouldn't be able to protect them until I return to civilization, enter a portal, and come back to Lock City.
I was confident in my ability to return alive. I was trained by my biological father before abandoning us two years ago.
Suddenly, a hole appeared, tearing through the fabric. I didn't get to look at it more clearly, because in the next moment, I was swallowed by darkness.
***
Darkness.
Complete, utter darkness.
I was floating…no more like swimming in a sea of nothing but reflectionless black.
It was peaceful. It felt like I was everything and nothing at all.
Time passed, I didn't know if it was a mere moment or if it was a year, maybe even a decade.
But, eventually, the darkness was swallowed by light, and the light was covered by a veil of mist. Inside the mist, a sphere stood out; on it were dark cyan runes. Instinctively, without much thought, I walked through the mist towards it. As soon as I reached it, I touched my hand, tracing across the runes.
Suddenly, I felt intense pain across my back. It was, properly, the most intense pain I could ever feel in my life. It felt as if someone was forcefully engraving something across my back, but at the same time, with each moment of pain, information flooded my mind.
I fell on the ground, the pain was still there. I couldn't help but let out a harrowing scream of pain. The pain lasted for a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity.
But it eventually passed, and a voice echoed through the mist.
[Chosen! Welcome to the Akashic records.]
[The seal of art has been broken.]
[You have ascended a rank]
The mist dissolved, and I was now lying on a soft bed of snow.
