Synopsis
High school drama meets the end of the world. Perry Collins was supposed to have a normal birthday — maybe some cake, a hangout with her best friend Nicole, and, unfortunately, her infuriating enemy Christian. But everything falls apart when a zombie outbreak traps them inside a mall with no way out and no clue what’s going on. Forced to stick together, Perry, Nicole, Christian, and their mutual friend Ruby flee through an apocalypse filled with chaos, secrets, and betrayal. People they meet die—or so they think—and each turn leads to more questions. Why are certain survivors being experimented on? Who’s behind this outbreak? And why does it feel like Perry is more involved than she should be? The group splits. People are taken. Tensions rise. But nothing can prepare Perry for what’s waiting. She might be the key to everything.. Friendships will be tested. Enemies may become something more. And sometimes, the biggest monsters aren’t the undead.

Chapter 1 - A Normal Birthday.

CHAPTER 1

One hour could be everyone having a nice time at the mall, the next could be the end of humanity... And me, stranded with my best friend and frenemy. Actually, I wouldn't say anything close to friends, so just mostly enemies.

Hold on, let me introduce myself. I'm Perry Collins. I'm currently 18 years old and in high school. I have light brown hair and light blue eyes. My hair is medium length, and most of the time in a ponytail.. though, that changed.

My life was a normal high school life. Although, that changed in the nick of time. That takes us back to my birthday on August 12th when my normal life was now.. Something straight out of a fiction book series. Well, let me explain.

AUGUST 12TH SATURDAY 11 AM.

I sat in my dining room, scrolling on my phone and eating my breakfast peacefully. It was pretty quiet, since my siblings and parents weren't home. My foster parents at work, my two younger brothers were at their school drama auditioning.

I continued eating silently, the only sound being my munching and the soft, slightly muffled sounds of the outside vehicles.

Soon enough, I finished eating and sat myself on the couch.

I boredly scrolled on my phone, but decided I would message my best friend, Nicole. But, that smartass beat me to it. I got a notification from him, which read,

"hey!. . . Guess who's birthday it is! Yours, so up for a day out with me? Usual spot, of course."

I messaged him back, and agreed to hang out. Our usual and favourite spot to hangout was a restaurant in a mall.

I hopped off the couch, and went to my room, and put on a casual outfit. I got my purse and car keys, locking the door as I exit the house. I walked to. . Well I wouldn't say my car, but my mothers. headed off into the direction of the mall. The drive there was 10 minutes, tops. But it felt more like 10 decades, honestly.

Eventually, when I got there, I parked my car, and made my way inside. It was pretty busy and crowded, which is expected on a Saturday afternoon. There were people chatting everywhere, and even babies crying in all directions.

I went up an escalator, and saw the restaurant. I saw him already standing there. I approached him, but. . someone else stood there aswell.

It was an annoyingly familiar figure. My worst enemy! . . Ok, perhaps that was a little dramatic. But seriously, I hate–

"Hey! a coincidence meeting you here, Perry." Spoke a familiar female voice. It was ruby. I was good friends with her, and wouldn't mind having lunch with her. But the problem was the one standing right next to her. I took a deep breath, and managed to speak up.

"Yeah, it is. WHAT are you doing out here?" I replied, a bit irritated, but tried hiding it.

I was so irritated by the fact Christian was here, I almost forgot Nicole was standing right next to me. Sigh. . . Alright, let me explain. Christian is my enemy, that I was really hoping I wouldn't meet here, and today out of all times; my birthday. The fact they had so many other choices other than this specific restaurant, annoys me even more. . I was quite obviously annoyed, it was written all over my tone that I spoke with.

I really did try hiding the fact I was irritated, and that this might've ruined my peaceful afternoon, but then christian had to rub it in my face. Of course.

"What are you staring at me for? It's not my fault you're stalking me and decided to come here 'coincidentally'. Not like I want to see you here either," Christian spoke, in his usual annoying voice and mocking tone. I gave an annoyed exhale, and scoffed. Ruby nudged him with her elbow and gave him a look of, 'dont start this in public' kinda facial expression.

"I don't stalk you, for the love of god. Don't go acting like you came here to this specific mall and restaurant all on coincidence. You really don't have any decency do you?"

I stated, and pointed out, giving him a reason to shut the heck up before I do it for him. Plus point, giving him a reason to stop annoying me like I already was by seeing his ugly ass face. But, my point didn't seem to cut it, his words only made this situation worse.

"What? Worried people will hear your lame comebacks? It's embarrassing to even talk to you out here like this, because you're so ugly. I could never be seen dead with you."

He retorted back to me, more snarkily. This only irritated me further, and he wouldn't stop.

"As if you're not the one who started this conversation in the first place, idiot."

I decided it would be better to be the mature one and leave or I really might snap in front of everyone. I grabbed Nicole's arm, and walked past that shit head and ruby, into the restaurant. I sat down at a table with him, trying to calm myself down.

After a moment or two, the other two also sat down in the same restaurant, not too far from us. . . The problem was me and christian were directly In front of eachother. Sigh. . This'll never get better, will it?

"So how are David and Dave doing?" Nicole asked me. Dave and David were my foster two younger brothers.

I continued my conversation with him, but it was quite difficult to focus on the conversation alone, considering christians gaze often fell on me, and I could feel it. I tried ignoring him, but if you knew him like I do, it's not easy especially when he indirectly targets statements at me, saying things like stuff about eating healthier or so. He really pisses me off, whether he tries to or not.

The thing that annoyed me the most, was that he knew that I could hear him perfectly well, and spoke in a yell-talking way. . making it more obvious that he was talking more indirectly. It was like an arrow aimed straight to my head. But, I didn't give into his childish behavior.

Eventually, me and Nicole got our food. It smelled extremely good and also tasted just as so, so much so that I pretty much forgot that I was in the same restaurant as Christian. A while passed, and me and Nicole had finished eating... So did christian. Yeah, sure, definitely a coincidence. Well, I thought at this point if we left it'd be okay, right? Well I should've guessed stalkers stalk.. not leave you alone. Me and Nicole walked to a donut shop nearby inside the mall, but bumped into who again? That shithead. This is quite literally inevitable... sigh.

I shrugged it off, although it was pretty irritating. Once I stepped up to order, I spoke up to order. "One chocolate donut.." ...let me just get this straight. The heck? This shithead absolutely had to order the same donut as me.. and had to order in sync with me? I just turned my head to him with an annoyed expression. He's really testing my patience here.

Once me and Nicole got our donuts, we headed outside the shop and sat outside on a bench. Nicole glanced at me and chuckled at my still annoyed expression.

"Guess he really is following you everywhere, huh?" He spoke. I replied followed with a heavy sigh.

"Yeah, I swear to god. ." I replied, taking a bite out of my donut, trying to calm my thoughts.

5:47pm

Me and Nicole haven't bumped into ruby and christian since the donut shop, and it was almost 6pm. Nicole and I went to all kinds of places, and I eventually forgot about christian. Ah.. this was definitely fun, I would definitely love to do this agai-..

My own thoughts cut off, by a horrifying scream from the lower floor below us. Since me and Nicole were only on the second floor, we managed to see the first floor crystal clearly. Although the scream could deafen you, the way this woman screamed was enough to send chills down my spine. in pure horror.

Me and Nicole ran over to the area where you could see the ground floor, and met christian and Ruby there too, as they came out from a cake shop to see what was going on as well. And what we saw next, was probably what would be referred to as the end of humanity. What I would assume was a human biting another person. No, not affectionately.

There was blood everywhere, for context.

Everyone was screaming and running all over the place while me, Nicole, Ruby and Christian were all stuck and frozen in place, still trying to process the terrifying scene displayed upon us. Just about then, some man came up to us.. limping one foot... And walking weirdly while groaning. I instinctively reacted, slapping the man's face with my purse, and I'm damn glad I did.. we all stared at the man's features in pure horror..
