Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Academia, John

Name: Academia, John

Age: 14

Quirk: Lego®

"..."

"Is that allowed? Isn't Lego a registered trademark?" The doctor reading his report was baffled.

"Never mind that, how is there a trademark symbol in his quirk registry?"

Sitting in the waiting room, John casually sipped his tea as they processed his quirk information.

As an American entering Japan, John naturally had to register his quirk with the National Quirk Registry of Japan.

John, like his friend Pony Tsunotori, was an American of Japanese descent. They had both applied to UA High, the most prestigious hero academy in Japan. However, unlike Pony, John had stayed in America for his final year in an American middle school.

His quirk, Lego, was a truly unique quirk. Reminiscent of the Lego toys that were still common to this day, he could fully transform any object, including himself, into Lego bricks, allowing him to reconstruct them into various shapes.

It was a unique ability, all things considered, but not too outlandish.

After his information was processed, Pony came and picked him up with her family.

"John!"

"Pony!"

"Oh my god, I haven't seen you in a whole year!" Pony circled John excitedly, grabbed his sleeves.

Sitting in the car, the two were able to catch up and talk about all the things they did in the past year.

"Even after a full year, my Japanese isn't very good," Pony admitted. "The only time I can really talk to people is when we video called~"

John, being the protagonist, naturally had the advantage here. He was fairly fluent in Japanese, almost at the level of a native speaker, though with a slight accent.

The car arrived at a modest 2 story home, with the name plate outside reading Tsunotori.

Now that he was in Japan by himself, John would naturally be living with Pony's family for the foreseeable future.

"Sorry for imposing, Mrs. Tsunotori." John wheeled his suitcase inside the house and took off his shoes.

"Oh, it's no trouble at all." Mrs. Tsunotori helped John unpack and showed him to his room, which was coincidentally, right across from Pony's.

Their parents were close friends, so of course, this had been arranged in advance.

The room was sparsely furnished, with only a bed, wardrobe, lamp, desk, and chair. Not that he minded, as he was a bit of a minimalist.

"Come here~!" Pony dragged John to her room as soon as he was done unloading.

Pony's room, in stark contrast to John, was a very "themed" room. It was mostly horse themed, but there were some anime merch, band posters, and Japanese language books scattered about as well.

"Look, this is the thing I was talking about~!" Pony held up the plush excitedly to John's face.

It was a horse girl.

"Uma Musume?"

It was very on brand for Pony to love this sort of stuff.

"I've been watching this anime recently. It's hard to understand, but I think my Japanese is getting better!"

"Uh huh... I'm not sure the Japanese they speak in the show is the same Japanese used in everyday conversation..." John said thoughtfully.

The room was not entirely unfamiliar, as John had seen it during video calls and in the pictures that she sent.

As for his room, John considered adding a bookshelf and maybe a bedside table.

He wasn't a fan of putting up posters or having figurines line his walls, but extra pillows were fine. Plushies were also fine, as they could double as pillows.

"Hey! You're not listening!"

Pony lightly pinched John when she realized that John's attention was no longer on her.

"Sorry~" John patted Pony's head. "Was just thinking about how to decorate my room."

...

After a brief time skip and a few trips, John's room was fully furnished.

"Ok, now we can go apply to UA, right?"

"Oh right! I almost forgot."

Applying to UA wasn't as simple as just sending an application, especially as a foreigner. John, having only just arrived, did not have the same type of education system as Japan, and so would need to complete a junior high school and high school readiness assessment.

"They make these things so complicated for no reason," John complained.

He then finally could send in the application, signed the waivers, and had both his parents and Pony's parents send in their forms, before finally getting his student applicant ID.

Now, after padding the word count, John still had to prepare for the exam itself.

The written test was still mandatory and very important if he wanted to pass the UA entrance exam.

The practical exam, on the other hand, was difficult.

Since his dad was a lead researcher of I-Island, he was able to get a spot in the recommendation exams, which allowed him to take the exam early for one of the 4 reserved spots.

And with his Lego quirk, John was confident that he would pass.
