Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The First Crack

The door opened without sound.

Kai stepped through first, Vex close behind him.

The moment they entered, the air changed.

It was colder here—sharp, clean, almost like winter. The floor was covered in pale dust, and the hallway stretched forward in a straight line, lined with tall black pillars.

Too many places for something to hide.

Kai glanced down at the badge half in his hand.

It was still warm.

Vex noticed. "You think it means something?"

Kai nodded slowly. "Everything means something in here."

They walked carefully, footsteps echoing.

For a while, nothing happened.

No monsters.

No traps.

Just silence.

Then—

A whisper.

Kai stopped instantly.

Vex froze beside him. "Did you hear that?"

The whisper came again, clearer this time.

Not from the walls.

From the badge.

Kai's blood ran cold.

He lifted it closer, staring at the metal.

The voice was faint… but unmistakable.

"Kai…"

His name.

Kai's throat tightened.

"That's not possible," Vex muttered. "It's messing with you."

Kai didn't answer.

The whisper continued.

"You don't really trust him."

Kai's grip tightened.

The hallway seemed to darken.

Vex took a step forward. "Kai?"

Kai turned sharply. "Don't."

Vex blinked. "Don't what?"

Kai realized what he'd done.

He forced his breathing to steady.

The game was inside the object.

Inside their heads.

The whisper shifted.

Now it spoke in Vex's ear.

"He will leave you."

Vex stiffened.

Kai saw it—the slight change in his posture, the way his eyes flickered with doubt before he could hide it.

Kai's stomach dropped.

It wasn't just targeting him.

It was targeting both of them.

The pillars around them began to hum softly.

A low vibration filled the air, like distant chanting.

The hallway stretched.

Or maybe it wasn't stretching.

Maybe they were no longer walking forward at all.

Kai looked back.

The door was gone.

Of course.

A soft laugh echoed.

Not from the game speakers.

From somewhere close.

Between the pillars, a figure stepped out.

Tall.

Thin.

Its body looked human, but its face was blurred, like it couldn't decide what it wanted to be.

And in its hand…

Was the other half of the badge.

Kai's eyes widened.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

Vex's voice was sharp. "That's not mine."

The figure tilted its head.

Then it spoke.

In Kai's voice.

"Trust breaks eventually."

Kai felt his skin crawl.

The figure raised the badge half, and the metal began to glow.

The whispering became louder.

Faster.

Crueler.

Memories flashed in Kai's mind—moments of betrayal, abandonment, loneliness.

Things that weren't even real.

Or maybe they were.

Kai staggered, clutching his head.

Vex grabbed his shoulder. "Kai! Focus!"

Kai looked up.

The figure smiled.

And then the hallway changed.

The pillars melted away, replaced by something worse.

A room.

A familiar room.

Concrete walls.

Ropes.

The beginning.

Kai's breath caught.

"No…"

The figure stepped closer.

"This is where you started," it whispered. "This is where you will end."

Kai's badge half burned hot in his palm.

Vex's voice trembled. "Kai… this is an illusion."

Kai nodded, forcing himself to stand.

But the fear was real.

The pressure was real.

And the figure was real enough to kill them.

Kai took a slow breath.

Then he lifted his badge half.

Vex did the same.

The two halves pulsed together.

For the first time, the whispering stopped.

The figure's smile faltered.

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"It doesn't like that," Kai said quietly.

Vex's jaw tightened. "Then we keep doing it."

The figure shrieked—an awful sound, like glass breaking inside a throat.

The room shook.

And the next stage began before they could even move.
