Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: When the Game Breaks

The air vibrated with tension.

Kai and Vex stumbled into the new chamber, their lungs burning, hearts hammering. The floor beneath them was cracked stone, glowing faintly along the fissures. Shadows stretched unnaturally across the walls, coiling like living things.

"This isn't a stage," Vex muttered. "It feels… wrong."

Kai didn't answer. He could feel it too. The game was unsteady. Unpredictable. The very walls themselves seemed… alive, shifting in ways that made his stomach churn.

A low sound echoed through the room.

Chains dragging.

Heavy, deliberate.

Punishment had followed them.

Kai glanced over his shoulder. The massive figure emerged from the shadows, its hollow eyes fixed on them, chains rattling with every step. But something was different. Its movements weren't precise anymore—they were chaotic, almost frantic.

"It's… out of control," Kai whispered.

The floor beneath Punishment cracked as it moved, the pillars of the room buckling. Panels of stone shifted in random directions, creating obstacles even for it.

The game's voice came next, strained and harsh.

"ERROR—ENTITY… UNSTABLE… PROTOCOLS FAILED…"

Vex's jaw dropped. "It's… panicking?"

Kai's mind raced. This was their chance. The creature had been a force of inevitability, unstoppable and terrifying—but now, instability meant an opening.

The chain monster lunged.

Kai ducked instinctively, rolling forward. The chains slammed into the cracked stone, sending shards flying. Vex rolled beside him, grabbing a broken pillar as a makeshift barrier.

Kai realized: the monster's attacks were faster, wilder, but less precise. It wasn't hunting—they were hunting each other.

"Distract it!" Kai shouted. "I'll go for the wall panels!"

Vex nodded, gritting his teeth. Together, they maneuvered between the shifting stones, using their knowledge from past stages to anticipate the monster's chaotic swings.

Kai grabbed the closest glowing panel and slammed it into the path of Punishment. The creature shrieked as it collided, stumbling briefly.

"Now!" Kai yelled.

They sprinted across the room, weaving through the broken pillars and shifting floor panels. Punishment tried to follow but was slowed, clumsy, its chains catching on the unstable environment.

Kai could hear the game's voice frantically shouting through the walls:

"ENTITY… ERROR… STAGE… COLLAPSING…"

The words echoed strangely, like a warning—and Kai understood. The game itself was losing control. Punishment was no longer its failsafe. It was… something else. Something ancient. Something alive.

They reached the far side of the chamber, where a faint light flickered. A door, unstable, cracked, and shimmering. It was their exit.

Kai glanced back. Punishment roared, its chains lashing wildly, but it couldn't keep up with the chaos of its own room.

"Go!" Kai shouted.

Vex didn't hesitate. Together, they ran through the door.

The room behind them collapsed in a storm of shadows and stone. Punishment's roar echoed as it vanished into the crumbling chaos.

Kai and Vex collapsed on the other side, chests heaving.

Kai looked at Vex, eyes sharp. "We just saw the game… break itself."

Vex swallowed. "And that thing… Punishment… it's still out there."

Kai nodded. "Yeah. And it's not going back into a stage. Not anymore. We've passed the point of no return."

The hallway ahead flickered with dim light. Shadows danced across the walls—but now, they weren't only watching. They were aware.

And Kai knew one thing for certain:

The Death Game was no longer just about surviving monsters, traps, or illusions.

It was about surviving the game itself.
