Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Cracks in the Alliance

The shadow creature lunged, a blur of jagged limbs and snapping shadows.

Kai rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding a swipe that shredded the floor behind him. Dust and stone exploded into the air, and Vex grunted as he swung a jagged piece of rubble, blocking another strike.

The other players froze, some screaming, some panicking. The game wasn't just testing strength anymore—it was testing control.

Kai's eyes darted between the creature and the players. Subtle signs told him who was being influenced: hesitation in their step, sudden glances toward the creature, whispers in their eyes.

"They're not themselves," Kai hissed. "The game's twisting their minds!"

One player, a boy with dark hair, suddenly lunged toward Vex, eyes wide with fear—or maybe obedience.

"Stop!" Kai shouted, pushing him back. The boy stumbled but caught himself, shaking his head as though waking from a dream.

"Focus!" Kai yelled. "It wants you to attack each other. Don't let it win."

The shadow creature shrieked, a horrible sound that made the walls vibrate. Its limbs stretched impossibly, smashing stone pillars into dust. Traps sprung from the floor: spikes, swinging metal chains, panels that fell away without warning.

Kai and Vex dodged and ducked, moving as one. Every moment required precision, every step could be death.

"We need to get to the platforms!" Kai shouted. "Move fast and keep together!"

The group hesitated, caught between fear of the creature and fear of each other.

Kai stepped forward, lifting his badge half so it pulsed brightly. A wave of light radiated outward, briefly clarifying the distorted perception the game was feeding the others.

"Trust me!" Kai shouted. "We survive together—or we all die!"

Some players hesitated, but a few nodded, following him. The creature shrieked again, swinging its shadowy limbs. One strike caught the floor near Vex, sending him sliding toward a spike trap.

Kai lunged, grabbing Vex and pulling him back just in time. The spike barely missed.

The group moved forward, leaping across collapsing platforms. Dust, stone, and shadows whirled around them. The game's whispers filled their minds: "They betray you… your allies will kill you…"

Kai gritted his teeth. "Block it out! This is only the game talking!"

Another player faltered. A girl stumbled, reaching toward another for support, but the game twisted her perception: she imagined betrayal, fear, and the figure of Punishment looming over her.

Kai shouted, "It's an illusion! Fight it!"

She blinked, shook her head, and regained her footing. But the strain was obvious—trust had begun to crack.

The shadow creature adjusted, faster now, sharper. Its attacks became unpredictable, testing their reactions to the edge of terror.

Kai and Vex worked in tandem, pushing forward, dragging the others along. Each platform they crossed felt like a victory, each dodge a lifeline.

Finally, a stable ledge appeared. Safe. For the moment.

They collapsed on it, gasping. Behind them, the creature shrieked in frustration, slamming against unstable platforms, unable to follow as easily.

Kai looked at the group, eyes sharp. "This is only the beginning. The game will try harder. It will push us to break. Don't let it. Trust each other, or we die."

Vex nodded, wiping blood from his forehead. "We'll need more than strength now. Strategy. Coordination. And… mental control."

Kai swallowed, scanning the shadows that still twisted around the edges of the chamber. "We survive. Together. That's the only way."

The creature shrieked once more, retreating slightly—but the warning was clear.

It wasn't done.

And neither was the game.
