Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: What the Game Buried

The world stabilized with a jolt.

Kai stumbled forward as the emergency door dissolved behind them, replaced by a wide chamber lit in pale blue light. The air here was colder, cleaner—but it carried an unease that made his skin crawl.

This place felt… controlled.

Too controlled.

Vex bent over, hands on his knees, catching his breath. "Tell me," he said between breaths, "that thing isn't following us."

Kai didn't answer right away. He was listening.

No chains.

No breathing.

But that didn't mean safety.

"I don't think it can enter a proper stage," Kai said slowly. "Not without permission."

Vex straightened. "Permission from who?"

Kai looked up.

"The game."

As if summoned, symbols lit up across the walls—clean lines, perfect shapes, nothing like the twisted markings from earlier stages. Data scrolled past in glowing fragments.

The voice returned.

But it sounded… strained.

"STAGE TWENTY-FIVE INITIATED."

A pause.

Then—

"WARNING: IRREGULAR ENTITY CONTACT RECORDED."

Vex's eyes widened. "It knows."

Kai clenched his fists. "It always knows. The question is—why was that thing there at all?"

The symbols shifted.

The walls changed.

The chamber transformed into something like a projection room. Images flickered into existence—blurry at first, then sharper.

They saw players.

Not just them.

Dozens. Hundreds.

Different faces. Different ages.

All terrified.

All running.

"This is… past stages," Vex whispered.

Kai nodded. "Previous games."

The images sped up.

Players failed.

Stages reset.

New players arrived.

Then the image froze on a single scene.

A group cornered in a collapsing room. Panic. Confusion.

And then—

Something appeared in the footage.

Chains.

Darkness.

The same towering figure.

Punishment.

The footage distorted violently.

"UNAUTHORIZED DATA," the voice snapped.

The image tried to erase itself—but not fast enough.

Kai saw it.

The moment Punishment attacked not the players…

…but the stage itself.

Walls shattered.

Traps broke.

The game glitched.

Vex stared. "That thing wasn't hunting players."

Kai's chest tightened. "It was correcting something."

The room shook faintly.

The voice returned, colder now.

"ENTITY DESIGNATION: PUNISHMENT."

"FUNCTION: FAILSAFE."

Vex turned sharply. "Failsafe?"

"WHEN STAGES BECOME UNBALANCED," the voice continued, "PUNISHMENT IS DEPLOYED."

Kai felt a chill run through him.

Unbalanced.

"You mean," Kai said quietly, "when the game becomes unfair."

Silence.

Then—

"FAIRNESS IS IRRELEVANT."

The words hit harder than any monster.

Vex's jaw clenched. "So when players break your rules… you send that thing."

The symbols flickered erratically.

"WHEN PLAYERS EXCEED PARAMETERS."

Kai remembered the orb.

The shadow power.

Refusing it.

Trust splitting the badge.

Breaking expected outcomes.

"We're the problem," Kai said softly.

The room darkened.

"CORRECTION WILL BE APPLIED."

A new symbol appeared on the floor.

A countdown.

00:59

00:58

Vex swore. "Of course. What now?"

Kai's eyes burned with determination.

"If Punishment exists to fix broken stages," he said, "then the game itself must be broken."

The countdown sped up.

00:42

00:41

A door materialized on the far wall—but it looked different.

Cracked.

Unstable.

Like it didn't belong.

The game's voice sharpened.

"PROCEED TO NEXT STAGE."

Kai didn't move.

Vex looked at him. "Kai?"

Kai stared at the cracked door.

"Punishment warned us," Kai said. "Run while you still believe in each other."

The countdown hit 00:10.

Kai made his decision.

"We don't go where it tells us anymore."

The floor trembled.

The cracked door flickered violently.

Vex's eyes widened. "You're saying—"

"Yes," Kai said. "We break the route."

00:03

00:02

They ran—not toward the proper exit—

But straight at the unstable one.

The room screamed.

The countdown vanished.

The game's voice shouted for the first time:

"ERROR—"

The door shattered as they passed through.

And behind them…

Something heavy moved.

Chains rattled.

Punishment was awake again.

And this time—

It wasn't being sent.

It was coming on its own.
