Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Weight of Doubt

The room didn't attack them.

That was the problem.

Kai sat up slowly, every muscle tense, waiting for the floor to shift or the walls to close in. Nothing happened. The space was small and square, lit by a pale glow that didn't flicker or hum. Too calm. Too normal.

Vex broke the silence first. "I don't like this."

Kai let out a quiet breath. "Neither do I."

There were no doors. No symbols. No obvious traps. Just smooth walls—and in the center of the room, a single stone pedestal.

On it sat a small object.

A badge.

Metallic. Dark. Etched with a symbol Kai recognized instantly—the same mark that had appeared with the key in earlier stages.

Vex frowned. "What is that supposed to be?"

Before Kai could answer, the voice returned.

"STAGE TWENTY-TWO."

The glow in the room brightened slightly.

"THIS STAGE REQUIRES TRUST."

Kai's stomach tightened.

Vex glanced at him. "That's never a good sign."

The voice continued.

"ONE OBJECT. TWO PLAYERS."

The badge lifted from the pedestal and hovered between them.

"ONLY ONE MAY CARRY IT."

Kai felt a pressure build in his chest. He'd learned enough by now to know what this meant. The game wasn't testing strength or speed.

It was testing people.

"What happens to the one who doesn't take it?" Vex asked.

The room was silent for a moment.

Then—

"OUTCOME WILL BE DETERMINED LATER."

Vex exhaled sharply. "Of course."

The badge rotated slowly, as if waiting.

Kai stared at it. He didn't reach for it.

Vex didn't either.

Seconds passed.

Then the walls shifted.

Not violently—subtly. The room seemed to shrink, inch by inch.

Kai felt the air grow heavier.

"It's pressuring us," Kai said quietly. "Trying to force a choice."

Vex's jaw tightened. "You should take it."

Kai looked at him. "Why?"

Vex hesitated—just a fraction of a second too long.

"Because," Vex said, "the game's already focused on you. If anyone can deal with whatever that thing does, it's you."

Kai searched his face.

There was logic in Vex's words.

But there was something else too.

Fear.

Not of the game.

Of being left behind.

Kai shook his head. "No. That's exactly what it wants. One of us carrying the weight alone."

The badge pulsed faintly, as if reacting.

The walls moved closer.

Vex swallowed. "Kai… what if refusing is the wrong choice?"

Kai closed his eyes briefly.

He remembered the shadow. The orb. The way power had almost taken everything from him.

"I won't let the game decide who matters more," he said.

Slowly, deliberately, Kai reached out—

—and pushed the badge back toward the pedestal.

The room froze.

The walls stopped moving.

The light flickered.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the voice spoke again, quieter than before.

"…UNEXPECTED RESPONSE."

The badge split in two.

Each half drifted gently into their hands.

Vex stared at his palm, eyes wide. "It… it changed."

Kai looked down at his own half. It felt warm. Steady.

"TRUST CONFIRMED," the voice said.

"STAGE COMPLETE."

A door appeared in the wall.

Kai and Vex exchanged a look—no words, just understanding.

They had passed.

But Kai couldn't shake the feeling that the game wasn't done with the idea it had just introduced.

Trust had saved them this time.

Next time…

It might be the thing the game tried hardest to destroy.
