The hallway stretched ahead, pale and silent.
Kai's heart pounded in his chest. Every step felt heavier, every shadow darker. The instability from the last stage still lingered in his mind.
Vex walked beside him, silent, eyes scanning every corner. "You think… it can control them too?"
Kai frowned. "Who?"
"Other players," Vex said quietly. "It's not just Punishment. The game… it's smart. It's going to try to use everyone against us."
Kai clenched his fists. "Then we have to stay ahead of it. Always."
They walked in silence for a few minutes, the walls occasionally rippling as if breathing. Then, the light ahead flickered, revealing figures.
Several players, huddled together, whispering nervously. Some recognized Kai and Vex. Some didn't.
"Finally!" one girl said. Relief in her voice. "I thought I'd never get out of that… stage."
Kai scanned them carefully. Something felt off. The girl's eyes flicked toward him with a momentary hesitation, just long enough to make him pause.
The voice came again, echoing faintly in the shadows:
"NEW CONDITION: TRUST WILL BE TESTED."
Kai swallowed. His stomach tightened.
The players began moving forward, but their formation was strange. Tight, coordinated—but Kai noticed subtle differences. A tilt of the head here, a pause there. Patterns that weren't natural.
"It's controlling them," Kai whispered. "Not directly, but… influencing choices. It wants to turn allies into threats."
Vex's face hardened. "So… we can't trust anyone?"
Kai nodded slowly. "Not yet. We only trust each other. That's all we have."
A sudden sound—a metallic clink—made them both freeze.
One of the "friendly" players raised a hand. A trap, Kai realized instantly. He lunged forward, grabbing the girl and pulling her down.
The floor behind them shifted violently, panels dropping to reveal spikes—almost like the game had anticipated every hesitation.
"Careful!" Kai hissed. "It's testing reactions!"
The girl blinked, fear in her eyes. "I… I didn't mean—"
Kai shook his head. "It doesn't matter. Focus. Survive."
Another figure moved toward them. Kai could see the subtle twitch in his movement—a sign of manipulation. A person being influenced by the game.
Kai raised his hand. "Vex, split left. I'll take right. Keep your distance. Don't hesitate."
The trio moved like clockwork. Every step, every reaction was calculated. The game sent illusions into the minds of the other players—showing betrayal, fear, loss. It whispered doubts into their ears.
"Trust no one… even your allies…"
Kai felt it too. A sudden pang of doubt, a shadow of fear.
But he blocked it.
Vex shot a glance at him. "You okay?"
Kai nodded. "We're okay. Just… move."
The room ahead opened into a wide chamber. Multiple doors. Multiple paths.
And standing in the center of the chamber—a creature made of flickering shadows, smaller than Punishment, but fast and jagged, its limbs stretching in impossible angles. It was a messenger. A hunter. A harbinger of the game's manipulation.
Kai gritted his teeth. "It's testing us again. And it's using the other players as bait."
Vex nodded. "Then we fight smart. Not strong."
Kai's eyes scanned the chamber. Traps, shadows, unstable platforms. The other players edged closer, drawn by the creature—or forced to be.
Kai swallowed. "We have to keep moving… but we can't let the game control anyone else. If we lose trust, even a little—we lose everything."
The shadow creature lunged.
The game had begun its next level of horror: manipulation, betrayal, and psychological hunting.
And Kai knew one truth more than any other:
Every ally could become an enemy at any second.
Every decision was a gamble.
And hesitation… could kill them all.
