When Serena got to the children shelter, she met the gatekeeper as usual after greeting and everything, she went inside the building where she met the kids playing in the front yard.
They seem not to have seen her, that's good. Serena said to herself as she made her way to the front office.
She met Miss Mia with other workers and caregivers, but she did not come for them.
Instead, she went to the director, Mrs. Crawford's office.
On her way there she looked around the place as if searching for someone, when she couldn't find the person she was looking for, Serena thought it was strange as she was sure that if the person was there she would be the first to welcome her.
But she did not ponder much on it, she noticed that the people she knew were throwing her strange look, she tried to think if something had happen or if she missed something but she could not think about anything at all, her thoughts went to Maria, but then again, she had been safely discharged home. She was sure of that.
Serena pushed the door to Mrs. Crawford office open and went inside the office. The woman seemed to be busy with her computer when Serena entered the office.
"Good morning Mrs. Crawford." Serena greeted, causing the woman to eventually lift her head to look at Serena, she had'nt noticed that someone entered the office not until now.
"Oh Miss Serena, finally you are here, we have been trying to contact you for the longest time since last week Tuesday, I have good news for you, please have your seat."
Serena pulled the closest chair that she could see and sat down on the chair. They had good news, is her Abigail okay now? She asked herself, before turning to hear what the elderly woman had to say.
"Early last week Tuesday morning…" Mrs Crawford began to say, "we received a huge anonymous donation and a letter." The woman paused.
Serena listened to her attentively not missing a single thing she said.
"And in that letter, a huge money had been donated to this shelter and another money was also donated to fund Abigail's trip to country Sygnus, where it is said that the most prominent, brilliant doctors, skilled surgeons, and revered medical scholars reside. She had already started the treatment for her lung there and the money for the treatment had already been paid."
Serena listened to all this surprised, was this why the other caregivers had been looking at her strangely,
"Whoa! That's such a relief Mrs. Crawford but how come I am just hearing of this now?" Serena asked, as far as she was concerned she was more of Abigail's guardian and even if the girl was not legally adopted by her, they still ought to have told her about all this.
"Oh, don't be annoyed the excitement in the shelter was huge on that day, so we tried to call your number numerous time on tuesday evening but you were not picking, we tried again on Wednesday, but still it was the same result, then we resort to sending you an email, even that too was not replied, it was then we decided to wait until you come visit the shelter." Mrs Crawford explained patiently.
Serena quickly brought out her phone and checked her email, lo and behold it was true, there were about three emails that was unread, two from Mrs. Crawford and another from Mrs. Linda another caregiver, she turned her phone off and kept it back inside her purse.
"Abigail's surgery was successful and was held on Friday, we tried reaching you then as well but it was unavailable. She's currently there just for the doctor to check on her and make sure she was recovering well. The doctor said her recovery was like a miracle, that they had'nt seen a case like that in years as she had stopped breathing, when all of a sudden she started breathing again." The elderly woman said excitedly.
Serena could not believe that when she had been too focused on Mr. Won all this had happened behind her back.
"Omg! For that I'm so grateful." Serena exclaimed when she heard the miracle part, she felt so happy for the little girl, finally, she is free from her lung disease.
"So, do you know who made the donation?" Serena finally asked.
"We don't know, all we know was that the Cheque was dropped along with other mails with a letter in the mail box, nobody saw the person's face."
"Have you tried checking the cctv cameras?" She asked.
"We have done that, but it seems the person is very familiar with the layout of the shelter and had avoided every cctv spot, only walking in the blind spot."
Serena sighed…
"I still can't believe this, this is really good news indeed." Serena could not believe her ears, as she prayed for the person that did such a good deed for her little girl.
"Whenever the other kids called her, Abigail constantly asked about you. But we have been telling her that you were busy and would call her when you are less busy." The woman quickly informed her. Which Serena nodded her head in response.
"Can you give me the number you use in contacting her?"
"Of course, just check your email, it was already sent to you."
"Thank you so much Mrs Crawford." Serena said before she left the office.
On her way to her car Serena could not help but ponder over who had donated that amount of money.
Actually, Kathy had wanted to take the responsibility of sending Abigail to the country of Sygnus, but it was not easy to get a visa and approval to that country, it takes more than just money to get an approval on your visa.
Serena was lost in her thoughts as she entered her car and drove home, tomorrow was a big day so she needed to be fully prepared.
When Serena got home, her grandparents were not in as they had told her of their plan to visit a priest. So, she did not think much about it.
She entered her room and immediately dialed Abigail's number, she missed her so much.
The phone rang for a while, before it was answered,
"Renie, why did you not call me all this time?" The little girl seems to have saved her number as she recognized her number at once.
"Oh my God Abi, I'm so sorry, I don't have any excuse but will you please forgive me?" Serena pleaded immediately she heard her little pumpkin voice, she could not fathom all the pain she went through in that surgery room and she was not even there to check up on her. This made Serena feel sad.
"I know Renie, I am just so happy you called today. Thank you for calling me today, I'm so happy. Don't worry I am no longer sad that you did not call me since." The little girl's voice still sounded cheerful, the way she had always been,
For that Serena was grateful.
She could not bring herself to tell her the news about her leaving the country, when the little girl had just recovered from a surgery, so she decided to postpone it to when she got to the vampire kingdom.
After a long catching up with Abigail, Serena finally fell asleep with a serene smile plastered on her face as she anticipated everything that will happen tomorrow.
…
Not far from Serena's house, a black car stayed there the entire night and only left at dawn.
