Synopsis
His own face turned into his greatest enemy. He wasn't living - he was waiting for his end. Joo Won was nothing more than a player in his own life, forced to perform the role of a perfect heir in a world built on lies. Every move had to be flawless, because one mistake could destroy the only person who ever mattered - his other half. His body is covered in scars, but none cut deeper than the one left by a goodbye that never came. All he has left is a faded photograph - two boys smiling in the orphanage garden, unaware that fate was already writing their tragedy. Now, even as a powerful chaebol CEO, Joo Won lives like a prisoner in his own empire, counting down his days in silence. Will he die without finding the boy who was once his world? Or will his gilded cage become the stage for his final rebellion? A dark thriller romance about identity, power, and the haunting bond between two souls torn apart by fate. Small note: I am a big fan of, video games, astronomy and ghost stories, so the story includes many references to them. If you find any reference that you cannot make sense of, please google it for clarification. For example, you'll see "Alpha Centauri" recurring in the story- it is a constellation of 3 stars- 2 big and 1 dwarf. N.B- I am not a webtoon artist, so I added AI generated images. However, some prompts were against its guidelines, so I had to use alternate AI models which could not maintain character consistency. This is my debut work, and I would appreciate constructive criticism.

Chapter 1 - Life of the Living Dead

Hwang Bae Hoon, the sole heir to the Hwang Group, stands out from other chaebol scions. At 29, he possesses a striking, 6'2" frame and eyes so captivating they cause women to lose their train of thought. He has a lean, athletic grace. His face is all elegant angles—a sharp jawline and defined cheekbones—softened by surprisingly full lips and expressive, almond-shaped eyes. His hair is thick and dark, always impeccably styled in a way that looks effortless but is clearly precise. His hands are another point of quiet attraction—slender yet strong with long, elegant fingers. They are capable-looking hands, equally at home guiding a business presentation or deftly maneuvering a video game controller. His voice is a baritone, calm and measured, with a resonant depth that commands attention without ever needing to be raised.

However, his most remarkable trait is his humility. Treating everyone with inherent and equal respect was a core tenet of his character, a principle he extended sincerely to every one of his colleagues without exception. he's the kind of person who will personally make you a cup of tea if you happen to see each other in the pantry, a gesture unheard of for someone in his position. Although he rarely smiles but when he does, even men can't look away.

Hwang Bae Hoon is a person who believes in equal opportunity for all. Growing up, he has seen many people trying to please him, appease him because he is the Chairman's son. The Chairman also took opportunity of this and used his son as a pawn in his business. But that's not right. Had he been who he really was, no one would even bother to ask him for a glass of water even if he was dying on the streets.

At 18, he came back to Korea to join the military services and then after 2 years, he returned to the US. 5 years after, he returned to Korea again to start his career at his father's company.

After getting his Business Degree from the US, Bae Hoon proposed a bold new venture: a video game subsidiary. As the new head (Bonbujang-nim) of Hwang Video Games, he decided to build his team entirely from an unorthodox talent pool—failed students who loved gaming and retired "geezers" who pursued gaming as a hobby. His reasoning was two-fold: he genuinely believed in giving people a chance regardless of their background, and he saw a clear business opportunity in hiring developers he wouldn't have to pay a full-time salary.

Initially, everyone scoffed at the idea. Competitors openly mocked Chairman Hwang, calling his son "good for nothing" and dismissing the project as a guaranteed failure. They had once feared Hwang Jr. as a genuine threat but now saw him as a non-issue. Chairman Hwang had to approve the project as Bae Hoon proposed the idea without even discussing this with the chairman, hence he grew increasingly irritated by the constant stream of condescending remarks directed at his son's venture. So, he warned Bae Hoon not to mess this up.

Hwang Bae Hoon as a child used to enjoy playing video games, it was only thing that gave him peace and the only thing with which he paid homage to the old Bae Hoon. He played a game called Chronos Legacy: The Sunken Cipher where he was Startrooper0103, along with another user by the name of Mightydragon0301 who accompanied him always in their adventure of new cities and look for new treasures- Mightydragon0301 and Startrooper0103. The video game was the only thing that felt like his own. When others went to sleep, he made a fort out of the sheets in front of the video gaming station and slept there. He had nothing to call his own except the birthmark on his hands that he adores and a photograph which he had in his pocket. "Ji Woo was right. It does look like a star," thought Bae Hoon. The birthmark and the photo and maybe the video game are his own and are probably the most favorite things in the world for him.

But soon he got sent to the US to study and ever since, he stopped playing video games. The presence of Secretary Baek who was sent with him to the US to keep an eye on him reminded him that he would never get to enjoy the things he so dearly longs for. Secretary Baek was sent to the US along with his daughter Hana. Hana also studied in the same school. Her father advised her to keep close to Bae Hoon. She thought it was for her protection, but little did she know it was for vigilance on her dear Bae Hoon. Every night at the dinner table, Mr Baek would dearly look at his daughter and ask-

Mr Baek :  So what did you and Bae Hoon do today?

Hana pouting: He is no fun. He doesn't laugh, doesn't talk, doesn't eat with me. Appa, US is bad. Bae Hoon doesn't play with me also. I want to go to my home. Can we go? I miss my friends.

Mr Baek : No. We have been given a good opportunity. You can study in a good school here. Spend more time with Bae Hoon. He will eventually like you too.

Hana blushed in the thought that Bae Hoon will like her too.

They continued their conversation about Bae Hoon.

Bae Hoon knows too well that he is under the Chairman's watch 24*7. So he occupied himself in studies, participating in sports, learning piano, cooking--He fell in love with cooking. But he barely spoke. To everyone's surprise, he became the top student in everything. All this made his father very happy as his son is living up to his fame. Who knew his replacement son could perfectly overshadow his real son who is now dead due to an accident?

This bastard is useful- he smirked with his whiskey on the rocks in his hands sitting on the couch in the living room of his mansion back in Korea.
