POV Sarif
The most powerful alphas did not deign to look at anyone, except their immense ego that crushed those who dared to put themselves at their level. They were both accompanied by an entourage of followers, most of them betas, who flattered them as if they were the most impressive thing in the world.
Oh! It was disgusting.
They and their arrogant faces, the faces of kids who have no fucking idea what the world is really like. All that bothered me.
"And today we introduce our great contributors, Messrs. Brax Braxan and Roft Raugoft!"
The entire audience applauded as if propelled by a spell. Smoothing their suits, the two protagonists got up from their seats and took the stage. They were brimming with vanity. Many showed them their most smiling faces, surely thinking that they would be rewarded for it later. But they were wrong. Those imbeciles were interested in nothing but themselves, even if they had started licking their boots, they would have gotten only contempt and insults.
Alphas were simply like that.
"Thank you, thank you," Brax took the microphone.
"I love you, Brax!" someone in the crowd shouted.
"Ha, ha! And I to you, omega!
Fake laughter again. Did anyone even notice when they dragged the omega out for interrupting Brax? Of course not.
"Now, now! Thank you for the applause... Today is a beautiful day. We are honored to be here. As you know, we, the Society of Alphas, protect you day and night. We are your guardians and your heroes. However, to remain one, each Alpha must form their own pack when they become adults.
Brax paused. People exchanged looks of amazement. His dirty mysticism was nothing spectacular if you asked me, I guessed what he was going to say. I was surprised, however, that he decided to do it today.
"That's why," he continued—... We announce that we will soon join our Lunas.
The betas and omegas squealed with joy. Brax and Roft. Two unreachable wolves that could hardly be dreamed of gave the opportunity to any girl to become her Luna. It was as if gold coins were falling from the sky.
"Yes, now... Thank you to my fans... Don't worry. Even if an omega is chosen as my predestined Luna, I will treat her like a queen.
"And so do I," Roft added.
They screamed. To this day, I was still surprised that those naïve women believed them. Never in all history had an Omega been chosen. Convenience and contact were everything. Therefore, it was not strange that the Luna was always a member of the most powerful packs and often ranked very high. But if you wanted to laugh at others, you had a lot to draw inspiration from.
"It's very important news!" said the announcer. Could you give us more details?
"For now, we can't...
The crowd sighed in disappointment.
"But don't worry," Roft said. We will be available every day to make the evaluations... That does not mean that the best placed wolves in the ranking will not be given relevance. But they all have a chance.
Some fainted with emotion. As I felt like vomiting, I moved away from the crowd and went into the bathroom. The evening was getting longer than I imagined, dangerously increasing the chances that I would have a panic attack. They said that blood pressure was a serious issue, that one could die if it was not controlled, but in my case, it came from my family. The crowds and the glances at me tended to make my knees tremble.
I exhaled, trying to calm my nerves. Oh, how I missed Antora in moments like these. She always repeated to myself that I should inhale and exhale deeply until my chest calmed down. I missed her so much at times like these. Just seeing her patient and loving eyes was enough to make it go away. Damn mission.
Outside the screams continued. The stupid ones who thought they would be elected were the ones who caused the most scandal. Surely, they dreamed of Brax and Roft at night, and they would even have figurines of them next to their bed. How crazy! If they found out, his life would fall apart. The fated Lunas made their triumphant appearance at the last moment and surprised everyone because no one knew about them. No Omega had any real chances, and evidently neither did I. Would I act like those fools if I had them? To think that it made my blood bloid.
"Calm down, don't worry about it," I said to myself. I was a hybrid. I was safe from those fools. I had no hope.
My mother was a wolf despised by the pack and my father a jackal who had migrated to the mainland due to economic problems. The worst combination. I didn't even have identity identification, so I basically didn't differ from a ghost. And it was literal. For people, I didn't exist. I could pass within inches of their faces, and they wouldn't notice me.
When my mother died at the hands of the Society of Alphas, I swore that I would take revenge on everyone. Maybe it was the only thing that was good for being a hybrid. To go unnoticed.
"And now." The time of the week. Time for the Ranking update!
I heard the announcer's announcement as if it were an approaching hurricane. He caught me with my pants down. I left the bathroom whistling and snuck into the front rows of the crowd.
Admiring, I looked at the Big Screen. It was a huge, blue-colored device that emitted glows throughout the compound, making it look like an underwater ship.
"Now!" said the announcer.
Brax and Roft were not looking at the screen. They had always been in the top places, so they weren't worried about someone overtaking them, but for the others, one more or one fewer number meant a resounding change. I had never attended the Ranking before. I had never attended the Ranking. I could sense that the other people felt the same way I did. Panic. Fear. Uncertainty.
The names appeared. I searched everywhere for myself. There were thousands. He still remembered when he had received the approval letter to participate in the Ranking. Luckily, I had some of my Wolf Blood, which had made it easier for me to enter the system. I had exerted myself until I almost fainted. And in silence, I ascended.
My name was not there. Again, I checked. Two, three, four times. Nothing. Sarif Yusupov, the hybrid, the jackal's daughter, was not on the list.
"WHAT IS THAT!?"
Suddenly, we all heard when the omega girl tore into the room with a scream that seemed to have burned her insides. His eyes were fixed on something, but what was it?
"What's wrong?" Her friend asked, frightened.
"LOOK THERE!"
The omega raised her languid arm and pointed to a spot. We all followed the direction marked by his finger.
Of course! We took it for granted that the first places were for Brax and Roft, so no one noticed the first and second places. It all made sense.
"What! The announcer pushed his way through.
A deathly silence took hold of everyone's mouths. Silently, I walked away. My heart was pounding as if I had just jumped from a huge height. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale.
"First place in the weekly ranking, with 3400 points, Sarif Yusupov," someone murmured as I passed him.
