Chapter 1 - 1. A message

Sunday, 15th October, 3045. Eastern region of Inglend Central Park in Dobleen.

Arnold sat alone in a newly painted bench under a cherry tree. The sun happened to be slightly hot today, and the park felt like the best place to relax, or so he made it seem.

'He brings her here every sunday after the early morning church mass,' he stared closely at the family he was tailing.

Then he pulled out both his hands from the bottom of his jacket pockets, a pen in one, and a small jotting note on the other.

He scribbled some words he noted down before raising his head and stared at the family again for a while.

'I'm guessing she's his daughter, or maybe his niece. It is better to be more accurate to avoid messing this up, or my boss may kill me, literally.' He chuckled, dipping the pen and jotter back into his pockets.

He bent forward, and the sounds of dry leaves softly getting crushed under his foot filled his ears because the park was filled with them.

The park cleaners were late today, but no one really bothered because the park wasn't looking so untidy. There were just scattered dry leaves around which looked and felt natural considering the surroundings.

Arnold watched as a black limousine drove into the park, and the family he had come to watch so closely, each went into the car.

Then, after a moment, they drove off into the highway, leading to the end of Arnold's research for the day.

'This is starting to become bothersome. Can't I just go into their home and carry out the mission without all this unnecessary information?.'

He rolled his sleeves, revealing a deep scar of a large knife cut stretching all the way to his neck.

'Might aswell just enjoy the park since I'm here.'

He pulled out a stick of cigarettes and lighted it. Then he placed it on the tip of his lips, inhaling and puffing the air into the surroundings.

'Project Dominion, I wonder how my teammates are fairing.' He scoffed, chocking on the cigarette on his lips.

Arnold is a member of a secret government group. Once among New Persey's most decorated covert agents, Arnold Vayne served under Division-9 during the Kharon Incident, a classified operation resulting in mass civilian casualties. Officially listed as KIA following the incident, his file was sealed and redacted from central archives.

He and his teammates dispersed after that, but current news showed they were dispatched to different countries to carry out the same operation he was currently on.

'I wonder if they've all gotten rusty like I have,' he smirked, standing up and taking his leave.

– –

Arnold walked into his hotel room, switching on the lights before closing the door shut.

He dropped the debris of his remaining cigarette into the bin before walking into the living room and taking a seat.

Checking around the table for any hidden items, he pulled out a freshly printed letter with the logo of New Persey on the front.

Walking up to the windows, he checked if he was being watched or eavesdropped before walking back to the middle of the living room.

He opened the letter, and the following words were in it.

'Agent Arnold, you are hereby directed to execute the assignment as briefed. Further instructions will follow through secure channels.'

'I mean, that's what I'm doing, ain't I?.' He sighed, ripping the paper into tiny bits before disposing it off.

He went into his room and picked up the hotel phone and called room service.

"Yeah, I want only coffee. Please send it to room 504, I'll be waiting. Thank you." He said briefly, ending the call as soon as he could.

He returned back to the living room to wait for his coffee. While he waited, he pulled out the jotter from his pocket and dropped it on the centre table.

Dragging it closer to him, he pulled out his pen from the other pocket and placed it beside the jotter.

'Time to crack this.' He sighed, hoping his coffee would arrive before he started.

He opened the jotter, and each page was filled with writing. Each had information about the officials within the capital, and each of these officials had something related to the military of the country.

His duty was to sabotage each country he walked into, and so far, he has only successfully stopped two countries. Each, he was specifically reminded to proceed with caution because of his habit of always doing things.

"I mean, we are at war with these people, why I'm I to proceed with caution. This will definitely lead to a big problem later. Eliminating an enemy should always be done quickly and swiftly"

'Even if there are casualties. What I'm I saying? Human life is important, not something to waste so easily.' He sighed, glancing back at the book in front of him.

With a slow motion, he lowered his back until it rested on the surface of the chair. Then he heard a loud knock at the door.

"Room service" the voice announced.

Arnold cautiously picked up his lance prototype handed to him for the mission. It was a portable railgun capable of firing superheated plasma rods at hypersonic speeds.

With calculated movements, he reached for the handle of the door and clicked it open slowly, revealing a young female dressed in a red suit and black skirt.

Her hair was black, and she looked goth, with eyeshadow painted below her eyes.

"Your order, sir." She said while chewing a gum.

"Thank you." Arnold responded, not wasting another second with the girl before shutting the door tight and locking it.

Dropping his lance prototype, he dropped his coffee on the table close to his jotter.

He saw a red beeping light from his transcribe, a tech built for international communication and can not be hacked by any system, highly private, and can only be used by Persey civilians.

'I haven't received a message from that since I got here, must be an emergency.' He rushed over to look at the reason for the beep.

He opened his transcribe and stared at the boldly written message on the screen's tab.
