Chapter 1 – The Flame of Curiosity (Part 1)
Eldrawin, a small stone village nestled between hills and dense forests, seemed to exist outside of time. The houses, built of stone and ancient wood, with roofs adorned with carved stone slabs and narrow streets hugging the walls as if protecting ancient secrets, gave the village a feeling of age and mystery.
The autumn morning was pale, with grey clouds creeping among the trees, creating moving shadows on the dew-soaked cobblestones. The cold wind carried the sounds of falling leaves and the howl of some wolves in the distant forest. Amidst these harmonious and strange sounds, Louis walked with quiet steps towards the small church library.
Louis, a sixteen-year-old boy, an orphan, shy, but very curious and intelligent. He was not just a servant of the library, but a lover of knowledge, spending long hours among the shelves of old books, wondering about their secrets, who wrote them, and why. Every manuscript was a window to another world for him, to an ancient life no one in his village had experienced.
"Louis! Make sure the new books are on the third shelf. Don't lose a single page." The voice of Father Christophe, stern but calm, came from the back of the library.
"Yes, Father, everything is in order." Louis replied as he carefully placed the manuscripts. His eyes did not leave the strange symbols on one of the pages; they stirred something within him, a feeling he couldn't explain.
As Louis sank into his routine, he noticed a slight movement between the tall library shelves. A short shadow shifted between the books, but it disappeared quickly. His heart fluttered slightly, but he soon returned to his inner calm:
"Maybe just my imagination… or the sunlight changing."
Then his gaze fell on a mysterious manuscript hidden among the books, covered in dust and cobwebs, as if it hadn't been touched for centuries. It drew him in an irresistible way. The binding was sturdy, covered in pale leather, sealed with an old mark Louis couldn't recognize.
He sat on the floor, the manuscript in his hands. He suddenly felt a strange warmth spreading through his body, as if it were pulsating with life. The symbols were strange, incomprehensible, but they interacted with him in a mysterious way.
"What is this?" he whispered to himself, his eyes widening in amazement.
Father Christophe headed to the library at that moment: "Louis,is everything in order?"
"Yes, Father, everything is fine." Louis quickly closed the manuscript, his heart still fluttering from the strange feeling. The Father didn't notice anything.
After the Father left, Louis returned to the manuscript and began to notice a repeating pattern leading him to an old place on the outskirts of the village, beyond the dense forest—perhaps an ancient cave holding secrets deeper than he could imagine.
And as the sun set behind the hills of Eldrawin, Louis sat on the floor, the manuscript before him, feeling astonishment and mystery. His heart was pounding, and his eyes shone with an indescribable feeling. He knew his life was about to change forever, and that this manuscript was the beginning of a journey of curiosity, knowledge, and magic, which would lead him to a world far larger than the village and the church, and perhaps to his true destiny.
---
As Louis sat with the manuscript in his hands, he began to study the symbols one by one. The faint ink lines twisted on the page as if pulsating, and sometimes his fingers felt a strange sensation, as if the manuscript was giving him its inner pulse. He tried to read some of the symbols, but it was not a familiar language, not even like the names of the books he had studied in the library.
"Could… this be magic?" Louis muttered to himself. His voice was barely audible, but it broke the routine silence of the library. His eyes darted between the pages quickly, and each page revealed something new and mysterious.
Suddenly, he felt a slight tingling in his fingers, and a small point of light shimmered from one of the symbols. Louis froze in astonishment, then cautiously reached out his hand again, and then he noticed the symbol changing on the page as if reacting to him.
"No… I don't believe it…" he whispered.
At that moment, he felt the library change in a subtle way; the sounds of the wind became louder, the smell of the old books became heavier, as if carrying hidden messages. The manuscript in his hand continued to glow softly, as if inviting him to discover something greater.
Louis closed his eyes for a moment, trying to calm his heart, and wondered why he felt this mysterious attraction to the manuscript. He knew something… something big had been hidden for centuries, and perhaps, this thing was connected to him personally, more than anyone else in Eldrawin could understand.
---
A few hours later, as the sun began to set, Louis decided to take the manuscript away from prying eyes. He placed it in his small bag and devised a preliminary plan to experiment with it in a safe place, away from the eyes of Father Christophe or any other priest.
He headed to a small room in the library that was partially abandoned, containing old shelves and high windows overlooking the church courtyard. He closed the door behind him and began reviewing the symbols again.
During his exploration, he noticed a strange indication in the manuscript, resembling a small map. It pointed towards the northern part of the village, where the dense forest and rugged hills were. Louis felt a pang in his chest: this was a place no one had dared to enter for decades, perhaps longer.
"The cave…?" he muttered, his hands trembling slightly. He knew this discovery meant the beginning of an adventure bigger than anything he had known until now.Everything was quiet in the village up to this moment, but beyond the forest, something awaited him… something that might change his entire life.
And as Louis thought about the coming adventure, he remembered the small events that had previously occurred in the library: strange whispers, shadows moving between the shelves, books falling suddenly for no reason. He began to slowly sense that all these signs were hinting to him, as if a prelude to the discovery of the manuscript and the cave.
---
With nightfall, as the candlelights in the library began to dance on the stone walls, Louis sat on the floor, the manuscript before him, and began taking notes on the symbols he had managed to interpret. He wrote a small note on a tattered piece of paper:
"These symbols are not just writing… they seem to interact with me. There is a message… or perhaps… a power."
He remembered a moment he hadn't noticed before: a feeling of warmth in his veins when touching the manuscript, and a slight tingling in his fingertips. Everything seemed like a sign from a larger, more mysterious world.
And in the silence of the night, with the murmur of the wind through the trees, Louis felt that his real journey had begun. He was no longer just a boy living among old books, but a person on the verge of discovering a power that might change the destiny of the village, and perhaps the whole world.
He smiled faintly to himself and decided to begin his first experiment with the manuscript tomorrow, ready to face curiosity, fear, and perhaps pain. He knew that the life he had known until now in Eldrawin, in the library, and in the church, would never be the same after this moment.
