Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

 Ra POV

I stand here looking out the window of the tallest building overlooking the city after a long work week with a glass of scotch and watch the sun set behind the city. I think back to everything that has happened since the fall of the Egyptian Empire about 3,000 years ago. I can't believe it's been 70 years since we had descended into this realm and hid among the mortals. It has been a hell of a ride compared to the life I lived in ancient times, I don't know how the mortals do it. They require sleep and regular meals, me being a divine being I don't need sleep nor do I have to eat like a mortal. Where the mortals need sleep I can just be in a sunny place to absorb the energy from the sun if I ever feel drained, similar to a plant. As for eating I don't have to do it since I'm an immortal but to blend in when needed I do eat a small something, like some fruits.

Thinking of times long passed, I wonder how the pharaohs were able to be as productive as they were when they only had so many hours where they could accomplish tasks. I guess that is because they had so many servants, ministers, and the likes. I swirl my scotch in my glass as I wonder if the others are having as much of an enlightenment, I guess you would call it as I am. I'm the ruler of the gods so I'm no stranger to responsibilities or to having many things to do, but compared to the role I'm now playing it feels like that was child's play even when they were squabbling and causing mischief! I mean the gods I could just allow them to do something they wanted but I had previously denied. That always settled them down for a few years, sometimes a century or two.

There are now 11 of us that aren't lifeless statue-like forms. When we first descended back to the Earthen realm from the Celestial realm we only had 9 of us that had survived the downfall of Egypt. Five years before the Romans conquered the Egyptian empire in 30 BC, after the defeat and death of the beloved Queen Cleopatra VII and Marc Anthony by Octaivan in the Battle of Actium, we had decided that we would return to our Celestial sunny golden thrones. I had planned to be there for a few years in the Celestial realm that would actually be around 20 years in the mortal realm. The others that were spending time in the mortal realm also decided to return and recharge on their celestial energy as well. Many of us would occasionally descend to spend time amongst the humans that worshiped us, they all thought we were beings they would never see. So I'm sure they would have been astonished if they knew we actually walked among them.

What none of us realized was that when we all left the mortal realm was that our beloved civilization would finally fall to the Romans. We also never anticipated that with the fall of the Egyptian civilization our influence would also start to fall. With the Egyptian people slowly giving up their previous worship of the gods they had worshiped for the past 3,000 years, information about us that helped to fuel people to decide to worship us was dwindling year by year. Gone were the days when we would descend and disguise ourselves to mingle with our worshipers. Ya we could still descend but the Egypt we were accustomed to no longer was the same, for a time it was turbulent.

Over the many centuries that came after many of the Egyptian Gods and Goddesses had turned into lifeless figures sitting on their thrones here in the Celestial realm. Many of the lesser deities had been in this state for years, once a lesser deity lost all their followers they would turn into a statue that sat either in the celestial realm or the mortal realm. Those that decided to allow themselves to turn to stone in the mortal realm were mistaken for statues of that deity. The reason for this happening was because we had all been slowly forgotten, until the time that the mortals started discovering ancient sites where the ancient towns and temples once stood proudly. Some of us had some history that was passed down the generations, but not many of us were that lucky. Some of us also had our Greek counterparts as well, so we weren't totally forgotten and the little bit of energy we got from that seemed to be enough to last. That was when those of us that weren't lifeless figures decided to descend to the earthen realm if given a chance to. That was when the mortals first discovered an artifact from the ancient Egyptian civilization 1,201 years had passed. What they found was the Rosetta Stone.
