Chapter 30 - The Weight of Failure

"We messed up sir", Anna whispered. Her once chipper tone sad as she sat facing Mercer. Her head laid on his desk in sadness.

Mercer said nothing as he looked out the courtyard; not many students could be seen walking around since most went home to visit family. There were still older knights training that hadn't been assigned to cities yet. The majority of the students have gone home so it felt oddly empty.

Mercer had no words for Anna as he realized what he did was unacceptable. Ironically the mission led to more questions than answers. If vampires truly did return to the kingdom then it'll bring more chaos.

It took Mercer months to make quell that monsters returned now vampires. Everything is just getting worse, and if words make rounds that he set up his students. Which allowed more of them to die would cause the fragile peace he had built in the Western Kingdom to go to shit.

"How is Sami?"Mercer acquired his tone low.

Anna tilted her head up replying,"Well luckily Healer Marko was able to teleport with me to stabilize him. After a couple of days I was able to teleport Sami, and the entire group back to the academy. As of right now Healer Marko said he only needs rest."

"Good", Mercer muttered happily that Sami isn't on his death bed.

"Um sir", Anna said hesitantly.

"Yes?"Mercer replied.

Anna took a deep breath as she explained the issue. "Sami's body didn't break down from the demonic energy like others would've. Actually his body was beginning to absorb the excess energy as if he could wield it. Yet we checked and his body was still human."

"I see, I'll look into thank you again Anna", Mercer assured. "If you'd mind I left a mission for you on my desk. Take Marko with you, I think it'll be better if you guys would leave for a while."

Anna didn't say anything as she took the files and left the room. She could feel the pain radiating off of Mercer. Part of it was her fault for not being a better teacher. Leaving Mercer to stare at the empty courtyard she shut the door behind herself.

Onyx was laying on Sami's chest as guilt ate away at her. When Silas attacked she just hid inside of the familiar mark, scared that Silas would kill her. A moment of weakness that allowed Sami to hurt himself over another mistake from the past.

Sami has been sleeping for about a week now, thankfully he's out of danger of dying. As Onyx laid there in deep thought Lyra came walking into the room. Taking the chair next to his bed she held his hand.
