Chapter 1 - The Man Beneath the Armor

The Man Beneath the Armor

Ethan Cross had never imagined saving the world.

At twenty-one years old, he was just another college student trying to survive late-night study sessions, part-time work, and the constant pressure of deciding what to do with the rest of his life. His days blurred together in lectures, textbooks, and endless assignments. The only place where he truly felt in control was behind the glowing screen of his gaming PC.

There, he wasn't Ethan Cross.

He was Krindrus Kennway.

For nearly six years, Ethan had devoted thousands of hours to Heaven Bound Heroes, the world's most popular sci-fi fantasy MMORPG. While most players chased rankings or rare cosmetics, Ethan became obsessed with mastering every mechanic the game had to offer. He memorized boss patterns, optimized builds down to the smallest percentage, and explored every forgotten ruin hidden across the game's enormous universe.

His greatest achievement had been creating a character unlike any other.

Krindrus Kennway was one of the last surviving members of the Celestari, an ancient race of star-faring beings whose civilization had crossed galaxies long before humanity had learned to forge steel. Towering over six feet tall and gifted with immense magical potential, the Celestari combined advanced biotechnology with arcane mastery.

Instead of carrying weapons, their bodies created them.

Instead of forging armor, they grew it.

Living metal flowed beneath their skin, forming silver and grey armor capable of repairing itself after battle. Cosmic mana coursed through every fiber of their bodies, allowing them to manipulate gravity, starlight, and space itself.

Krindrus had become Ethan's masterpiece.

After years of updates, expansions, and impossible raids, Ethan had transformed him into one of the strongest Magic Knights on the entire server.

Then came the final expansion.

The developers called it The End of Eternity.

It introduced the greatest threat the game had ever seen: The Void Sovereign, an ancient cosmic entity capable of consuming worlds themselves.

Millions of players attempted the final raid.

Only a handful succeeded.

After nearly eighteen straight hours of failed attempts, Ethan finally stood before the last boss alone.

His fingers ached.

His eyes burned.

His room was illuminated only by the shifting colors of the monitor.

"Come on..."

The Void Sovereign unleashed its final attack.

Ethan timed his counter perfectly.

Krindrus surged forward, twin bio-forged blades extending from his forearms in flashes of silver.

One final spell.

One final strike.

The boss's health bar reached zero.

For a moment...

Nothing happened.

Then every light in Ethan's room flickered.

His monitor filled with brilliant white light.

The victory music stopped.

The computer screen cracked without making a sound.

"What the—"

The light exploded outward.

It swallowed the room.

Swallowed his apartment.

Swallowed everything.

Ethan felt himself falling.

There was no ground.

No sky.

Only endless stars.

Countless voices whispered around him in languages he couldn't understand.

One voice, however...

He heard clearly.

"Rise... Krindrus..."

Then darkness.

...

Cold rain struck polished metal.

Ethan's eyes flew open.

He gasped, but the sound echoed strangely inside an enclosed helmet.

"What..."

His voice sounded deeper.

Not his own.

He tried to wipe the rain from his face.

Instead, a silver gauntlet rose before his eyes.

His heart nearly stopped.

"No..."

He stumbled backward.

Heavy footsteps shook the ground.

He looked down.

Silver and grey armor covered every inch of his body.

Blue lines glowed faintly beneath overlapping plates of living metal.

His breathing quickened.

"This isn't possible..."

He reached for his helmet.

It wouldn't come off.

Panic set in.

He stumbled toward a nearby pool formed by the rain.

The reflection staring back at him wasn't human.

A towering knight of silver and grey stood beneath the storm, its face hidden behind a smooth featureless helm illuminated by pale blue eyes.

He recognized the armor instantly.

The living metal.

The glowing mana channels.

The unmistakable design.

"...Krindrus."

His own character stared back at him.

"This has to be a dream."

He pinched himself.

Nothing.

He tried logging out.

Nothing happened.

No menus appeared.

No inventory window.

No map.

No health bar.

Just the sound of rain.

Then...

A voice echoed inside his mind.

Ancient.

Calm.

Unfamiliar.

"You awaken sooner than expected."

Ethan froze.

"...Who said that?"

"I did."

The voice seemed to come from everywhere at once.

"You wear my body."

"You carry my memories."

"My name..."

A strange pressure filled Ethan's mind.

Images flashed before his eyes.

Burning stars.

Alien cities drifting through space.

Worlds consumed by demonic armies.

A silver warrior standing alone against impossible odds.

Pain lanced through his skull.

"My name... is Krindrus Kennway."

Ethan collapsed to one knee, clutching his helmet.

"No..."

"And now..."

The alien voice spoke with quiet certainty.

"We are one."

The rain hissed as it struck silver armor.

Not the gentle rain of a spring afternoon, but a cold, relentless downpour that turned the forest floor into black mud and filled the air with drifting mist. Ancient trees stretched toward a slate-colored sky, their twisted branches hiding what little moonlight managed to pierce the storm.

A lone knight walked through it as though neither rain nor wind existed.

His armor gleamed despite the darkness, forged from overlapping plates of silver and dull grey metal unlike anything this world had ever seen. Tiny veins of pale blue light pulsed beneath the surface like living stars trapped inside steel.

No skin was visible.

No face.

Only a featureless helm crowned with faint lines of glowing azure.

The monsters stalking him never understood why their prey never seemed afraid.

His armor gleamed despite the darkness, forged from overlapping plates of silver and dull grey metal unlike anything this world had ever seen. Tiny veins of pale blue light pulsed beneath the surface like living stars trapped inside steel. Every movement was smooth, deliberate, impossibly quiet for someone standing over six feet tall in full plate.

No skin was visible.

No face.

Only a featureless helm crowned with faint lines of glowing azure.

The monsters stalking him never understood why their prey never seemed afraid.

Crunch.

The knight stopped.

Not because he had heard the sound.

Because he had counted it.

Three heartbeats.

Four.

Five.

Seven living creatures surrounded him.

"Ethan."

The voice echoed inside the helmet.

It wasn't spoken aloud.

It never was.

"Three to your left. Two above. One directly behind you. One is masking its mana."

Ethan sighed.

"Yeah... I know."

"Then why do you hesitate?"

"Because I'm tired of hearing you."

Silence.

Then came a laugh.

Not cruel.

Not kind.

Ancient.

"You wear my body."

"You wield my power."

"You breathe because my heart beats."

"You will hear me until one of us dies."

Ethan clenched his armored fist.

It had been three months.

Three months since he had woken inside another body.

Three months since Earth had vanished.

Three months since Krindrus Kennway refused to stay dead.

Leaves exploded.

Six crimson figures lunged from the darkness.

Lesser demons.

Horned.

Lean.

Covered in black scales with mouths full of needle-like teeth.

They moved faster than wolves.

To Ethan...

They looked painfully slow.

The world itself seemed to stretch.

Every droplet of rain hung in the air.

Every muscle movement became obvious.

Target.

Angle.

Velocity.

Weak points.

Instincts that weren't his flooded his mind.

"Left shoulder first."

His body moved before Ethan consciously decided to.

A silver blade erupted from the back of his forearm.

Not drawn.

Grown.

Liquid metal surged through microscopic channels beneath the armor before bursting outward into a four-foot longsword made from living alloy.

The nearest demon never finished its roar.

One swing.

Its body split cleanly in half.

The remaining creatures froze.

Confusion.

Fear.

Too late.

A second blade emerged from Ethan's opposite arm.

Blue symbols ignited across his armor.

Mana rushed through him like lightning.

The forest floor exploded.

Dozens of crystalline spikes erupted beneath the charging demons.

Three died instantly.

One lost both legs.

The final pair tried to flee.

Ethan raised one armored hand.

"Graviton Bind."

The air folded.

Invisible pressure slammed into both demons.

Bones shattered.

Their bodies collapsed into the mud without another sound.

Silence returned.

Rain continued falling.

Ethan stared at the corpses.

"...That was level twenty trash."

No experience notification appeared.

No quest complete.

No loot window.

Nothing.

Just dead creatures.

Real ones.

The first time he'd killed something in this world...

He had vomited inside the helmet.

Now...

He mostly just felt tired.

"Efficient."

"I wasn't asking."

"Your sword form has improved."

"Stop complimenting me."

"I am complimenting myself."

"...Right."

Ethan rubbed the side of his helmet.

Somehow that actually helped.

Krindrus was always there.

Sometimes quiet.

Sometimes speaking for hours.

Never sleeping.

Never disappearing.

Ethan still didn't know if the alien warrior's consciousness had survived...

Or if his own fractured mind had simply created it.

Neither possibility made him feel better.

The smell reached him first.

Smoke.

Not demon fire.

Wood.

Homes.

Ethan looked toward the western horizon.

Orange light flickered beyond the trees.

His stomach tightened.

"A village."

"Approximately four kilometers."

"Already under attack?"

"Likely."

Ethan broke into a sprint.

Running in full armor should have been impossible.

Instead, the forest became a blur.

Every step launched him nearly twenty feet.

Branches shattered against invisible mana barriers.

Wind screamed around him.

Within minutes—

He emerged onto a hillside overlooking a farming village.

Or...

What remained of it.

Homes burned.

Fields smoldered.

People ran through muddy streets carrying children.

Demons poured through broken wooden gates.

Dozens of them.

No.

Hundreds.

Lesser demons.

Greater demons.

Winged horrors circled overhead.

A massive crimson beast nearly fifteen feet tall smashed apart the village watchtower with a single swing of its axe.

Ethan felt his heart sink.

He knew this event.

"The Black Hollow Raid..."

In the game...

Players never reached this village in time.

It existed solely to show how dangerous demon invasions had become.

Everyone died.

Every single NPC.

He remembered looting the ruins afterward.

Now...

They weren't NPCs anymore.

A little girl cried beside her mother's body.

An old man tried to defend three children using nothing more than a shovel.

A young knight screamed in terror as a demon tore through his shield.

Real people.

Real fear.

Real blood.

Ethan took one step forward.

Then stopped.

There were too many.

Even with Krindrus' power...

This body wasn't max level anymore.

He had awakened far weaker than his original character.

Strong.

Ridiculously strong by local standards.

But not invincible.

"Calculate."

Krindrus' voice became cold.

"Estimated survival probability."

"...Forty-two percent."

"Acceptable."

"You call forty-two acceptable?"

"Victory rarely exceeds thirty."

"...You're insane."

"Correct."

Ethan sighed.

"Guess I'm becoming you."

The armor brightened.

Blue light spilled between every plate.

Mana flooded the surrounding air.

The heavens answered.

Clouds parted.

Stars became visible despite the storm.

One.

Two.

Hundreds.

Every constellation blazed.

The villagers looked upward.

Even the demons hesitated.

"What..."

A child whispered.

"...is that?"

Ethan removed the sword growing from his arm.

Instead—

Both hands opened.

Silver light gathered between them.

Not fire.

Not lightning.

Starlight itself.

Every magical instinct inside Krindrus awakened.

Ancient words surfaced in Ethan's mind.

Language older than kingdoms.

Older than humanity.

Older than this world.

His voice echoed across the battlefield.

"I am..."

He almost said Krindrus.

Instead—

He stopped himself.

"I'm..."

Who was he?

Ethan?

Krindrus?

Both?

Neither?

The hesitation lasted only a heartbeat.

"...The one standing in your way."

The spell completed.

A beam of celestial light descended from the heavens.

It struck the center of the demon army.

There was no explosion.

No roaring fire.

Only silence.

Then...

Everything within fifty yards simply...

Disappeared.

Stone.

Mud.

Demons.

Weapons.

Gone.

As though erased from existence.

The battlefield froze.

Every surviving demon stared at the smoking crater.

Every villager looked toward the lone silver knight standing atop the hill.

The crimson demon commander slowly turned.

Its glowing yellow eyes fixed upon Ethan.

"...Celestari..."

The creature actually sounded afraid.

Ethan frowned beneath the helmet.

"They know this race?"

"Of course they do."

Krindrus' voice became unusually quiet.

"We nearly exterminated demonkind."

"Long before your species learned to shape iron."

The demon roared.

Hundreds charged at once.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"So much for making a quiet entrance."

His forearms split open.

Living metal flowed across both hands.

Twin cosmic blades formed beneath the rain.

Blue eyes ignited behind the featureless helmet.

Then the last champion of a forgotten race walked alone into an army.

Far above the battlefield...

Something watched.

Hidden beyond the clouds.

Far beyond mortal sight.

A presence older than stars opened one eye.

It smiled.

"The final Celestari..."

Its whisper crossed worlds.

"...has awakened."

And somewhere deep beneath the continent...

Something ancient stirred in response.
