Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 – The Ring That Shouldn’t Exist

Lucas's gaze finally settled on the Philosopher's Stone.

For now, he had no intention of taking it out openly. The thing was simply too eye-catching.

Besides, Dumbledore was probably more familiar with the Philosopher's Stone than anyone alive. Pulling it out now would practically be begging for trouble.

Lucas decided it would be safer to wait until he eventually parted ways with Dumbledore before openly studying it.

That left only one thing.

The treasure chest.

"System," Lucas asked mentally, "what exactly can I get from this chest?"

"Ding! System treasure chests may randomly grant any item of significant value. Rewards are not limited to this world."

Lucas's eyes lit up immediately.

Not limited to this world?

Now that sounded exciting.

Still, after dealing with the system for this long, Lucas had learned not to trust the word random too easily.

"Let me guess," he said suspiciously. "It's another fake random reward, right? You say it's random, then secretly hand me some Dark Magic item again."

"Ding! Open it or don't."

"…Fine. I'll tolerate your attitude this time." Lucas sighed dramatically. "Open it."

"Ding! Opening system treasure chest…"

A second later—

"Ding! Congratulations, host. You have obtained a spatial ring from a cultivation world."

Lucas nearly fell off the bed in excitement.

"A storage ring?!" he blurted out internally. "The kind from cultivation novels?"

A tiny ring capable of storing countless items?

That was every transmigrator's dream equipment!

"Ding! The ring contains five cubic meters of storage space. The host may freely store objects inside. Time within the storage space is completely frozen."

Lucas became even more excited.

"Can it store living things?"

Immediately, Nagini came to mind. After all, his prophecy from the previous night had shown the snake entering some kind of ring-shaped object.

"Ding! Living beings cannot be stored. The ring rejects all living creatures."

"Ding! Additionally, the ring is soul-bound to the host. It cannot be lost, stolen, or opened by anyone else unless the host personally grants permission."

Lucas rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

That was strange.

If living things could not enter the ring, then how had Nagini appeared inside it during his prophecy?

Unless…

It wasn't this ring at all.

Or perhaps he could modify it later using a perfected Undetectable Extension Charm.

"Ding! Does the host wish to claim the reward now?"

"Of course!"

The moment Lucas confirmed it, he suddenly felt something cool appear in his hand.

A plain grey ring rested in his palm.

There were no jewels or decorations upon it. The only details were intricate runic patterns carved along the surface, giving it an ancient and mysterious appearance.

Lucas examined it carefully before sliding it onto the ring finger of his right hand.

The instant he did, a faint shimmer passed over the ring.

It automatically tightened to fit perfectly around his finger—

Then vanished completely.

Lucas's eyes widened.

Interesting.

He focused slightly, and the ring instantly reappeared on his hand.

"It can turn invisible too?"

That was absurdly convenient.

Without wasting time, Lucas immediately said, "System, take out the Philosopher's Stone."

A dark red stone appeared in his palm.

The irregular crystal radiated a faintly mysterious glow beneath the tent lights. Even simply holding it made Lucas feel strange warmth flowing through his body.

After observing it briefly, he brought the Philosopher's Stone close to the ring.

With a single thought—

The stone vanished.

Lucas immediately focused his attention on the ring itself. In his mind, he could now sense a quiet white space existing inside it.

The Philosopher's Stone floated peacefully at the center.

As long as he wished it, he could retrieve it instantly.

Lucas grinned happily.

"Perfect. Now nobody will ever discover I'm carrying a Philosopher's Stone."

Only then did he remember the two remaining skill points he had earned from the mission earlier.

Without hesitation, he invested both points directly into Divination.

[Divination Proficiency: Level 3]

At first, Lucas did not notice much change.

Then suddenly—

His perception sharpened.

It was difficult to describe exactly what had happened, but his awareness of the surrounding world felt clearer somehow, almost as if invisible threads hidden within reality had become easier to sense.

More importantly, his danger-warning talent strengthened dramatically.

Previously, he could only predict danger roughly ten seconds in advance.

Now the range had doubled.

Twenty seconds.

Lucas immediately became interested.

"System, what exactly can my Divination abilities do now?"

"Ding! Host's danger awareness has strengthened."

"Ding! Additionally, the host may now accurately predict major events involving a designated target within the next month."

"Ding! The host may also enhance prophecy through the use of external mediums."

Lucas blinked.

"What do you mean by mediums?"

"Ding! Examples include crystal balls, tea leaves, tarot cards, coins, lottery systems, and similar objects."

Lucas became increasingly intrigued.

"To what extent can I predict things?"

"Ding! The host may now glimpse fragmented images of events occurring within the next month."

"Ding! The contents of the vision depend upon the target or subject the host wishes to predict."

Then the system suddenly added another warning.

"Ding! Host is strongly advised not to casually predict your own future."

Lucas frowned.

"Why not?"

Honestly, he was extremely curious about his own future.

"Ding! All prophecy requires a price."

"Ding! When the host predicts the future of others, the system greatly reduces the cost. Minor side effects may still occur."

Lucas immediately remembered the horrific feeling during Apparition earlier.

"Wait…" he muttered. "That nausea from Apparition… was because I predicted Nagini's future last night?"

"Ding! Correct."

Lucas's expression changed slightly.

"Then what would happen if I predicted my own future?"

The system paused for a moment before replying.

"Ding! The result would be something the host least wishes to lose."

"Ding! You may randomly lose a person you cherish deeply… or something precious beyond replacement."

Lucas instantly felt a chill run down his spine.

That price was horrifying.

Then another thought occurred to him.

"What about my danger-warning ability?" he asked quickly. "Does that have side effects too?"

"Ding! Danger Warning is an innate talent possessed naturally by the host."

"Ding! Because it only predicts incoming danger, it carries no side effects."

Only then did Lucas finally relax.

Good.

At least one of his abilities wasn't trying to destroy his life in exchange for information.

Still, after hearing all that, Lucas immediately lost interest in predicting his own future.

Honestly, if someone already knew exactly when and how they would die…

Life would become far less interesting.
