The knife went in too easily.
A soft, wet sound. Almost gentle.
Like it belonged there.
Lin Xiao didn't even feel the pain at first. He looked down slowly, as if his body hadn't quite caught up to reality yet. The blade was buried deep in his chest, right where his heart should be. Blood spread across his shirt in a dark, blooming stain. Warm, too warm.
"…You…"
His voice came out hoarse, broken.
The man in front of him smiled. A familiar and trusted face, that was the worst part.
"Don't look at me like that," the man said lightly, twisting the knife. "You knew too much."
Pain exploded, white-hot, violent and absolute.
Lin Xiao choked. Blood spilled from his mouth as his knees buckled. The world tilted, spinning out of control as strength drained from his limbs. Rain began to fall. Cold drops hit his face, mixing with the warmth of his blood.
"I trusted you…" he rasped.
"You trusted the wrong person."
The blade was pulled free.
For a moment everything went quiet. No sound, no pain. Just emptiness.
Lin Xiao fell.
Darkness swallowed him whole.
Then the pain ripped him apart.
Not the slow fade of death. This was a soul-shredding tear, like his entire being got yanked through a meat grinder and slammed into new flesh. His eyes snapped open. He knelt on cold polished stone inside a vast torch-lit hall. Chains bit into his wrists. His body felt wrong. Smaller, weaker, eighteen at most. Torn robes clung to his skin already slick with fresh blood.
Voices crashed over him like thunder.
"Lin Xiao, you worthless trash. The Lin Clan has tolerated your existence long enough."
The speaker loomed on a raised dais. Elder Lin Zhen, gray beard, eyes like black ice, core Formation peak. Power rolled off him in waves that could crush mountains.
Lin Xiao blinked hard. Foreign memories flooded in. This body belonged to the Lin Clan young master. A complete failure, spirit Novice rank 1, no talent and wasted every resource. The clan had sentenced him to public execution for disgracing the family name. Tonight, right now.
He tried to stand but chains held him down. Panic clawed his throat, this was real. The alley knife wound was gone, replaced by bruises and cuts from whatever beating this body took before he arrived. The cold stone under his knees, the thick smell of incense and old blood. The killing intent pressing down like a mountain ready to bury him.
"Any last words, boy?" Elder Lin Zhen asked. His voice dripped pure contempt, behind him stood a dozen elders and guards. All stared at Lin Xiao like he was already a corpse. Cousin Lin Feng smirked from the side. Arrogant genius, spirit Master early stage. The one who had probably set this whole execution in motion.
Then the pressure hit.
Elder Lin Zhen raised one hand, pure killing intent poured out, invisible qi blades sliced into Lin Xiao's skin. Blood welled from a hundred tiny cuts. His body screamed, every nerve ignited in soul-deep terror designed to break strong men into weeping beggars.
A mechanical voice exploded inside his head. Cold and emotionless.
Infinite Defiance System activated.
Host detected: Lin Xiao. Soul integration complete. Current realm: Spirit Novice rank 1.
Warning: Immediate life threat detected. First Main Quest issued.
Quest: Defy the Execution. Survive Elder Lin Zhen's killing intent for 60 seconds without begging or breaking. Success: 800 Defiance Points. Unlock Defiant Overdrive skill. Failure: Soul erasure. Permanent death.
Defiance Points: The currency of survival. Earned only through blood spilled while facing certain doom. Lose 1 percent of your health. Gain 1 DP. You must reach under 5 percent health to qualify. No mercy. No second chances.
Lin Xiao's breath locked. A blue panel hovered in his vision. Invisible to everyone else. Stats appeared beside it.
Strength: 10.
Agility: 10.
Vitality: 10.
Intelligence: 10.
Defense: 10.
Luck: 8.
All base values, trash tier. But the system promised unlimited growth. No caps. Just defiance.
The killing intent intensified. Blood trickled down his arms, health bar dropped. 95 percent. 90 percent. Each drop earned a point. 5 DP. 10 DP. The system fed the numbers straight into his mind.
He looked up at Elder Lin Zhen. Their eyes met, the old man's face twisted in surprise. Most victims broke in seconds. This boy stared back with raw defiance burning in his gaze.
"You think this will break me?" Lin Xiao growled. His voice came out hoarse but steady. "I'd rather die a thousand times before I kneel to scum like you."
The intent grew stronger. It felt like knives twisting inside his organs, vision swam red. Health dropped faster. 70%..... 60%.... 15 DP gained. His body shook, muscles tore, bones creaked, but he did not scream.
Memories of the alley flashed. The betrayal, the rain. He had never given up then, he wouldn't start now.
At 400 DP the system chimed again.
Defiance Corrosion triggered at 500 DP threshold. First personality shift initiated.
Something inside him twisted. Emotions dulled at the edges. Panic faded into cold calculation. Rage sharpened into something darker. Ruthless. Ice spread through his veins. Mercy was for the weak. This world would learn that the hard way.
The pain. It should have been unbearable. Instead a dark thrill flickered at the base of his skull. A hunger. The more it hurt, the more DP poured in. He craved it now.
Lin Feng laughed from the sidelines. "Look at the trash. Still pretending to be tough. Pathetic."
"Shut your mouth." Lin Xiao spat. Blood flew from his lips. Health at 45 percent. 55 DP earned. The pain clawed at his sanity. But the system rewarded every second.
The timer ticked. 32. 31.
Elder Lin Zhen narrowed his eyes. "Impressive for a trash, but futile." He poured more power into the intent. Air cracked, stone tiles splintered beneath Lin Xiao.
Lin Xiao's knees buckled. He forced them straight. Health plunged to 22%, 78 DP. His heart hammered like it would explode. Vision tunneled, but he laughed. A raw, broken sound that echoed through the hall.
"You call this power?" he shouted. "I have faced worse from street dogs. Come on, hit me harder, I want every last drop."
The clan elders murmured in shock. This was not the weak young master they knew. The boy's eyes glowed with unnatural fire, colder and darker.
Health hit 12%, 88 DP. The system spoke again.
Warning: Health critical. Under 5% threshold approaching. Quest progress: 92% complete.
Lin Xiao's body felt like it was tearing apart. Blood poured from his nose, ears, eyes. But he locked his gaze on Elder Lin Zhen. Unyielding and defiant to the core.
Twenty seconds left.
The killing intent became a storm. Health bar flashed red. 8%. 7. 6.
He screamed then, not in surrender. In pure rage. "I will not die here, not like this. I defy you all."
Health dropped to 4%. The system chimed.
Quest complete. 800 Defiance Points awarded.
Defiant Overdrive unlocked: Activate to multiply all stats by 10 for 60 seconds. Cooldown: 24 hours. Backlash risk if overused.
Power flooded Lin Xiao. Not yet activated. But the knowledge burned like liquid fire. He held back. Saved it for the real fight.
The killing intent vanished. Elder Lin Zhen lowered his hand. Confusion flickered across the old man's face for the first time.
"Impossible," he muttered. "No one survives that at Spirit Novice."
Lin Xiao coughed up blood, his body was a ruin but he was alive. The system had begun repairing the worst damage. Vitality ticked up slowly.
The Corrosion lingered. Thoughts felt sharper. Less burdened by old emotions. He felt nothing warm toward anyone in this hall. Only cold acknowledgment of the power he now held.
"Release the chains," Lin Xiao said. His voice steady now. "Or I will break them myself."
Lin Feng stepped forward. "Elder, let me finish him. This freak needs to learn his place."
Elder Lin Zhen raised a hand to stop him. "No. The execution proceeds as planned. Guards. Prepare the execution blade."
Lin Xiao smiled through bloody teeth. The first real smile this body had ever worn. "Come on then. Let us see how many of you I take with me."
The system panel updated.
Daily Quest issued: Survive the next hour or face soul deletion.
Main Quest progress: Clan execution escape route unlocked. Earn 500 more DP by reaching under 1 percent health in the coming battle.
Penalty timer: 7 days of no defiance equals system deletion.
Lin Xiao rose as the guards approached. Chains rattled. Muscles burned, but inside, something unbreakable had awakened.
The first guard swung a heavy sword. Lin Xiao dodged on pure instinct, he grabbed the man's wrist. The 800 points had already boosted his base stats slightly. He headbutted the guard. Cartilage crunched, blood sprayed.
"Next," Lin Xiao snarled.
Elder Lin Zhen watched with growing fury. "Kill him, slowly."
Three more guards charged. Lin Xiao activated nothing yet. He wanted the points. He let their strikes land. A fist to the ribs, a kick to the knee. Pain exploded. Health dropped to 35% again. 65 more DP earned.
He laughed through it all. The sound mad. Unhinged. But it carried power. The pain addiction deepened. Each blow sent a dark rush through him. More, he needed more.
Cousin Lin Feng drew his own sword. "I will do it myself."
Lin Xiao met his eyes. "Try it then, I've been waiting for this."
The fight spilled across the hall. Tables overturned, torches scattered, clan members shouted in alarm. Lin Xiao took hit after hit. Deliberately, greedily. Each one fed the system. Each one made him stronger.
At 9% health he finally moved.
"Defiant Overdrive," he whispered.
Power surged, stats multiplied by 10, the world slowed, he blurred forward, his fist connected with Lin Feng's chest. Bones cracked and the cousin flew 20 feet and slammed into a pillar.
Screams erupted.
Elder Lin Zhen roared and unleashed a full qi blast. A wave of energy that could level a building.
Lin Xiao stood his ground. Overdrive still active. He punched straight into the blast. The collision shook the entire hall. Cracks spiderwebbed across the walls.
Health dipped to 3% from the backlash. Points poured in, another 200 DP.
The timer counted down, 47 seconds left.
Lin Xiao charged the dais. Guards fell like wheat before a scythe. He grabbed one by the throat and used him as a shield. Blood soaked his robes, his own and theirs.
The hall descended into full panic, flames licked at the curtains, shouts turned to terror. Lin Xiao's body screamed for rest. The Overdrive backlash would hit soon, but he kept moving, kept fighting, kept defying.
Sixty seconds of pure survival had bought him this chance. Now he would carve his own path out of this hell.
As the elder's next strike came, Lin Xiao smiled again. Bloody, broken and unstoppable.
This was only the beginning.
The pain from his wounds throbbed like a drug. He smiled into the chaos. Let the hunt begin.
The system chimed once more.
Main Quest progress: Clan execution escape route unlocked.
He broke free of the remaining chains with raw strength and sprinted toward the nearest corridor. Behind him the clan erupted in pursuit. Torchlight and shouts chased him into the night.
He ran alone into the dark forest bordering the Lin lands. Trees whipped past, roots threatened to trip him. His breath came in ragged gasps. Health stabilized at 7%, thanks to lingering boosts and the first healing pill he bought with DP on the run.
The system chimed once more.
Main Quest complete: Clan execution escape achieved. Reward: 500 additional Defiance Points. Total now: 1565.
New Main Quest: Reach outer sect recruitment grounds alive. Survive three days of pursuit. Success: Unlock Defiant Overdrive stage 2. Failure: Soul erasure.
Behind him, torchlight flickered in the distance, dogs barked. The full clan hunt closed in fast.
The pain from his wounds throbbed like a drug, he smiled into the rain.
The forest swallowed him whole. Rain continued to fall, washing some of the blood from his torn robes. But the fire in Lin Xiao's chest burned hotter than ever. He would survive this night, he would grow and one day soon, the Lin Clan would regret the day they tried to execute him.
Defy or perish.
There was no third option.
He ran on.
