Episode 17: Separated
The forest felt tighter.
Darker.
Marcus and Elara ran as fast as they could. Branches hit their faces, roots tried to pull them down, and the cold air burned in their lungs.
Behind them…
It was still coming.
Slow.
Calm.
Smiling.
"Don't stop!" Elara shouted, her voice shaking.
"I'm trying!" Marcus gasped. His chest burned, his legs weak from the last battle.
Then—
CRACK!
The ground beneath Marcus broke.
"Marcus!" Elara screamed.
He fell.
Down into darkness.
Hitting the ground hard.
Pain shot through his body.
For a moment… everything went silent.
"Marcus…?"
He opened his eyes slowly.
"Elara?" he called weakly.
No answer.
He looked up.
The hole he fell through was high above him… too high to climb.
He was alone.
Above, Elara stood at the edge, breathing hard.
"Marcus! Are you okay?!" she shouted.
"I'm alive!" he replied. "I can't get up! You have to—"
He stopped.
Because something appeared behind her.
"Elara…" Marcus whispered, fear rising.
"Don't move…"
She froze.
Slowly… she turned around.
The creature stood behind her.
Closer than ever.
Its long fingers twitched.
Its wide smile stretched even more.
"Elara… RUN!" Marcus shouted.
But she didn't run.
Instead…
She stood still.
Too still.
Marcus's heart dropped.
"Elara…?"
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
The creature leaned close to her.
Its voice came out like a whisper inside Marcus's head.
"She belongs to this forest…"
Marcus's eyes widened.
"What…?"
Elara slowly turned back toward Marcus.
Her face… had changed.
Her eyes…
They glowed faintly.
Like the shadows.
"Elara… what's happening to you?" Marcus asked, his voice shaking.
She looked at him… but something in her eyes was different.
Not fully her.
"I… I tried to hide it…" she said softly.
"But… I am connected to this forest…"
Marcus stepped back slowly.
"No… no, you're not…"
She shook her head. Tears filled her eyes.
"I am not fully human, Marcus…"
The creature stepped back, watching them… enjoying the moment.
"The forest… it created me…" Elara continued.
"I was meant to guide hunters… to test them… to lead them deeper…"
Marcus felt like the ground broke again under him.
"You… you were lying to me?"
"No!" she cried.
"I didn't want this! I helped you because… because I chose to! Not because the forest told me!"
The creature laughed softly.
"She cannot escape what she is…"
Elara grabbed her head, in pain.
"Marcus… it's trying to control me…"
Her voice started to change…
"I… I can't hold it…"
Marcus clenched his fists.
"No! Fight it! You're stronger than this!"
She looked at him one last time…
Tears running down her face.
"Marcus… if I lose control…"
Her voice broke.
"…you have to stop me."
Silence.
Heavy.
Painful.
Marcus shook his head slowly.
"I won't…"
The creature stepped forward again.
"Then you will both fall…"
The forest shook.
The darkness grew stronger.
And Marcus realized something terrifying…
The enemy was no longer just the forest…
It might be Elara too.
