Chapter 22 - Chapter 22

Episode 22: The Choice

The forest heart pulsed slowly.

Like it was alive.

Like it was watching.

Marcus stood still.

In front of him—

The black tree.

Behind him—

Elara.

Fading.

"If you destroy this… I disappear," Elara said softly.

Her voice was weak, like the wind could carry it away at any moment.

Marcus shook his head.

"There has to be another way…"

The creature stepped forward again.

Silent.

Calm.

"There is no other way."

Marcus turned sharply.

"Then I'll make one!"

The creature watched him… then slowly…

It began to change.

Its body twisted.

The shadows around it broke apart.

And for the first time—

Marcus saw its true form.

A man.

Broken.

Dark.

But human.

Marcus's eyes widened.

"You…"

The man looked at him with empty eyes.

"I was the first…"

Marcus frowned.

"The first… what?"

"The first hunter…"

Silence.

Marcus's heart dropped.

"No…"

The man nodded slowly.

"I came here… like you…"

"I tried to destroy the darkness…"

"But I failed."

The tree pulsed louder.

"The forest took me… changed me…"

"Now I am part of it."

Marcus clenched his fists.

"So you became… this?"

"Yes…"

"I guide others here… so the forest can grow…"

Marcus's anger rose.

"You're helping it?!"

The man's face twisted slightly.

"I have no choice."

Elara stepped forward weakly.

"Marcus… listen…"

He turned to her quickly.

"There must be a way to save you!"

She smiled sadly.

"You already know the truth…"

Marcus shook his head again.

"No… I won't accept that…"

The tree pulsed harder now.

The trapped souls inside it moved… reaching… crying silently.

The first hunter spoke again.

"Destroy the heart… and end the forest…"

"Or walk away… and let it live."

Marcus's breathing grew heavy.

Two choices.

Both painful.

"If I destroy it…" he said slowly…

"Elara dies…"

She looked at him.

Tears in her eyes.

But she nodded.

"And if I don't…"

The man answered.

"More will come…"

"More will suffer…"

"The forest will never stop."

Silence fell.

Deep.

Heavy.

Marcus looked at Elara.

Then at the tree.

Then at his sword.

His hands trembled.

"Elara…"

She stepped closer.

Even though her body flickered.

"I'm not afraid…" she said softly.

Marcus's voice broke.

"I am…"

She gently touched his hand.

"You taught me something…"

He looked at her.

"To fight… even when it hurts…"

Tears rolled down his face.

"Do what is right… not what is easy…"

The tree pulsed louder.

Time was running out.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Pain filled his chest.

When he opened them again…

They were clear.

Strong.

"I'm sorry…" he whispered.

He turned…

And raised his sword toward the heart of the forest.

Elara smiled softly behind him.

"Thank you…"

The creature… the first hunter… watched silently.

Everything was about to end.

Or begin again.
