Episode 21: The Truth Beneath
The darkness swallowed Marcus completely.
No wind.
No sound.
No light.
Just… silence.
Marcus walked slowly, his sword glowing faintly in the dark.
Each step echoed, like he was walking inside something… not just a place.
"This… isn't normal," he whispered.
Then—
A faint light appeared ahead.
Marcus moved toward it carefully.
As he got closer…
He saw something that made him stop.
Bodies.
Dozens of them.
Hunters.
Frozen in black stone.
Their faces were filled with fear… pain… despair.
Marcus's chest tightened.
"These are… all the ones who failed…"
A voice answered him.
"Yes…"
Marcus turned quickly.
The creature stood behind him again.
Calm.
Watching.
"You…" Marcus said, gripping his sword.
But the creature didn't attack.
It simply pointed forward.
"Look deeper…"
Marcus hesitated… then turned back.
Behind the frozen hunters…
There was something else.
A massive tree.
But it was not normal.
Its roots were black… like veins.
Its trunk pulsed… like it was alive.
And inside it—
Shapes moved.
Like souls trapped within.
Marcus stepped closer slowly.
"What… is this?"
The creature spoke softly.
"This is the heart of the forest…"
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"The guardian… wasn't the heart?"
"No…"
The creature stepped closer.
"The guardian protects it…"
Marcus's grip tightened.
"Then what is THIS?"
Silence.
Then—
The creature answered.
"This… is what remains of a broken world."
Marcus frowned.
"I don't understand."
The tree pulsed harder.
And suddenly—
Images filled Marcus's mind.
A village.
People living in peace.
Children laughing.
Light everywhere.
Then—
Darkness.
Shadows falling from the sky.
Screams.
Pain.
Death.
Marcus staggered back.
"What… is this?"
The creature's voice echoed slowly.
"Long ago… this was not a forest…"
"It was a place of life…"
"Until humans brought darkness into it."
Marcus froze.
"What do you mean?"
"Greed… war… betrayal…"
"The land was destroyed…"
"And the pain… created this."
The tree pulsed again.
Louder.
Stronger.
Marcus's heart pounded.
"So this forest… is made from… suffering?"
"Yes…"
"Every fear… every death… every broken soul…"
"Lives here."
Marcus looked at the trapped figures inside the tree.
"They're not dead…" he whispered.
"No…"
"They are part of it."
Marcus stepped back slowly.
Horror filled his face.
"This place… it feeds on people…"
"It grows… with pain."
Silence.
Heavy.
Marcus clenched his fists.
"Then I'll destroy it."
The creature tilted its head.
"Can you destroy pain?"
Marcus didn't answer.
The tree suddenly pulsed violently.
And then—
Marcus heard a voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
"Marcus…"
His eyes widened.
"No…"
He turned slowly.
Behind him…
A faint figure appeared.
Elara.
Weak.
Fading.
But there.
"Elara…?" Marcus whispered.
She looked at him, her eyes soft again.
"I… I'm still here…"
Marcus stepped forward, shaking.
"I thought… I lost you…"
She smiled weakly.
"I'm part of the forest… remember…"
Her body flickered.
"But not fully gone…"
Marcus's heart raced.
"Then I can save you!"
She shook her head slowly.
"It's not that simple…"
The tree pulsed again.
Stronger.
Elara looked at it… then back at Marcus.
"If you destroy this…" she said softly…
"…you destroy me too."
Silence.
Marcus froze.
His worst fear…
Was now real.
