Chapter 1 - A Good Life

Ben looked up from his computer screen and gazed outside. It was early autumn, and strings of grey clouds were streaking the sky. I like the light this time of the year. As nature prepared for sleep, it felt like peace and quiet covered the world.

The man stood up, his head was barely higher than when he was sitting, showing his under the average height. He stretched his thin arms and yawned. He walked to the coffee machine, pushed the button and looked dreamily at his cup being refilled. Scratching his short curly hair, he looked at the hot beverage and thought, Brown eyes, brown hair, brown leaves… everything is brown.

He chuckled in self-derision. He knew he had never been so good with jokes. He wasn't exceptionally good at anything, come to think about it, but he could get by. And above all, he had his credo. He remembered vividly his childhood. He had once asked his mom how to live a good life. She told him, "Just make sure when you go to bed, that you did more good than harm that day." Ben had lived by this principle since then. And he felt that this simple idea fulfilled his life's purpose.

The door of his office was open. He heard a soft knock, and when he looked back, his boss was in the entrance. "Morning, Ben." The average man waved a hand and answered, "Morning, boss, quiet day uh?" His boss winced. "We have a bit of a situation, and I need your help."

The cup made a soft chime as it touched the table. It was usually Ben who would have to handle weird situations. He didn't mind, it made him feel like every day could be an adventure.

His boss continued, "We have this client who called, she thinks her dream house is haunted." The employee chuckled, "Oh, I didn't know we sold ghosts." His boss didn't laugh. "We need that sale, Ben. Go see her and work your magic, you're good with people."

His boss was turning away. Ben was usually patient, but he felt slightly ruffled by his boss's behavior. He called him back, "What do I do with the ghost then?" The man stopped and stared at him. "Whatever you want, adopt it as a pet for all I care. Just get us the sale."
