Chapter 32 - Seasoned with Love

Season 2 – Episode 23: "Before You Knew Me"

Amara's POV

The training kitchen was louder than usual that morning.

Which I liked.

Noise in a kitchen means people are trying.

Learning.

Building something.

I stepped inside and immediately smelled garlic, onions, and someone slightly burning toast.

Marcus was already laughing.

"Who's responsible for that smell?"

A young cook raised his hand.

"My bad."

Marcus nodded.

"Honesty is a good start."

I smiled and walked further in.

Then I saw Luke.

He was showing someone how to plate properly — calm, focused, patient.

Honestly?

It was kind of attractive.

Rose leaned beside me.

"You see it too."

"What?"

"The mentor version of Luke."

I nodded slowly.

"He's good at it."

Rose smiled.

"I told you."

Just then Luke looked up and noticed me.

His expression softened immediately.

"Amara."

I walked over.

"Chef Luke, huh?"

Marcus laughed.

"He likes when you call him that."

Luke ignored him.

"You came early."

"I wanted to see the program."

Luke glanced around the room.

"Well… this is it."

I looked proud.

"You're doing something important."

Before he could respond, the door opened behind us.

And the energy in the room shifted instantly.

I didn't know why yet.

But Luke did.

Because his entire posture changed.

Slightly tense.

I turned.

A man walked in.

Mid-thirties maybe. Confident. Observant.

Not nervous like the others.

Rose noticed immediately too.

"Who's that?"

Marcus whispered,

"That's not a beginner."

The man looked directly at Luke.

"Didn't think I'd find you running a training kitchen."

Luke exhaled slowly.

"Hello, Adrian."

I looked at Luke.

"You know him?"

Luke nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian stepped closer, scanning the room.

"Well this is… different."

Marcus leaned toward me quietly.

"That tone sounds like history."

Luke spoke calmly.

"What are you doing here?"

Adrian shrugged.

"I heard about the program."

Rose crossed her arms.

"And you decided to visit?"

Adrian smiled slightly.

"Something like that."

I stepped forward a bit.

"I'm Amara."

Adrian looked at me with curiosity.

"So you're the one."

Luke immediately spoke.

"Adrian."

It wasn't aggressive.

But it was firm.

Adrian raised his hands.

"Relax. I'm just saying."

I looked between them.

"How do you two know each other?"

There was a pause.

Then Adrian answered before Luke could.

"Luke and I used to work together."

Marcus muttered,

"I knew it."

I asked gently,

"In restaurants?"

Adrian smiled.

"Not exactly."

Now I was really curious.

Luke spoke carefully.

"Different time in my life."

Adrian nodded.

"That's one way to put it."

Rose's eyes narrowed slightly.

She was reading the room.

"So what brings you here today?" she asked.

Adrian looked around the training kitchen again.

"I wanted to see if the rumors were true."

"What rumors?" Marcus asked.

"That Luke Bennett turned into a community builder."

Marcus laughed.

"Oh it's true."

Adrian studied Luke.

"You used to hate working with people who slowed you down."

Luke didn't react immediately.

"That was a long time ago."

Adrian tilted his head.

"Was it?"

The room was quiet now.

The young cooks were pretending not to listen.

I stepped a little closer to Luke.

Not dramatically.

Just naturally.

Adrian noticed.

"You didn't tell her everything yet, did you?"

Luke's voice lowered slightly.

"Adrian."

I touched Luke's arm gently.

"It's okay."

Then I looked at Adrian.

"What do you think I don't know?"

Adrian studied me for a second.

Then he said something honest.

"Luke used to build businesses that moved fast and didn't look back."

Marcus whispered,

"That sounds like Luke."

Adrian continued,

"He was brilliant. Still is."

Luke didn't argue.

"But back then," Adrian said, "people got left behind sometimes."

I glanced at Luke.

He met my eyes calmly.

No denial.

Just truth.

"That's fair," Luke said quietly.

Adrian looked surprised.

"You're not going to argue?"

"No."

That shifted the energy again.

Adrian studied him more carefully now.

"Alright… maybe you really did change."

Rose spoke up.

"Oh he did."

Marcus nodded.

"Trust me."

I looked at Luke.

"Why didn't you tell me about this part of your life?"

Luke answered honestly.

"I wasn't hiding it."

"You just didn't talk about it yet."

"Yes."

I nodded slowly.

"That's fair."

Adrian looked genuinely confused now.

"That's it?"

I smiled slightly.

"What did you expect?"

"A fight."

Rose laughed.

"Wrong couple."

Marcus added,

"They argue. But they talk more."

Adrian crossed his arms.

"Huh."

Luke looked at him.

"So why are you really here?"

Adrian paused.

Then his tone shifted slightly.

"Because someone from our old circle heard what you're doing."

Luke's expression grew more serious.

"And?"

"They're interested."

Marcus frowned.

"Interested how?"

Adrian answered,

"Funding. Partnerships. Expansion."

I felt Luke tense beside me.

I looked at him.

"You don't like that idea."

Luke shook his head slightly.

"Depends on the terms."

Adrian nodded.

"Still careful."

"Always."

There was a quiet moment.

Then Adrian looked at me.

"You should know something about Luke."

I waited.

"He's at his best when he believes in something."

I smiled.

"I've noticed."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"Good."

Then he surprised all of us.

"I want to help."

Marcus blinked.

"Wait what?"

Rose raised an eyebrow.

"That was unexpected."

Luke studied him carefully.

"Why?"

Adrian shrugged.

"Because maybe people can change too."

The room was quiet again.

I looked at Luke.

He was thinking.

Deeply.

The way he does when something important is happening.

Finally he said,

"We'll talk."

Adrian smiled.

"Fair enough."

As Adrian stepped back toward the door, he looked at Luke one more time.

"You're building something real here."

Luke nodded.

"That's the goal."

Adrian left.

And the room slowly came back to life again.

But I could feel it.

Something had shifted.

Later that night…

Luke and I sat together in the quiet restaurant.

I asked softly,

"Is this going to complicate things?"

Luke thought for a moment.

"Yes."

I appreciated the honesty.

"But," he added, "not in a bad way."

I leaned against him.

"You sure?"

Luke looked at me.

"As long as Amara and Luke keep talking."

I smiled.

"Deal."

But I had a feeling…
