Chapter 35 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 2 – Episode 26: "What They Say About You"

Amara's POV

The restaurant was busy that night.

But not in the normal way.

People were still eating, laughing, ordering food…

But some of them were watching.

You can feel it when attention changes.

Marcus noticed first.

He leaned toward me near the kitchen pass.

"Okay… is it just me, or are people recognizing Luke now?"

I glanced toward the dining room.

A couple at table six was definitely whispering.

Rose walked up beside us.

"They read the article."

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah, that."

Luke was across the room talking to a supplier, completely calm like usual.

But I knew he knew.

Luke always notices the room.

Rose spoke quietly.

"This is the part where reputation gets tested."

Marcus sighed.

"I preferred the quiet days."

Just then Luke walked over.

"You three are staring at me."

Marcus shrugged.

"You're trending."

Luke blinked once.

"I don't like that sentence."

Rose handed him her phone.

"Daniel posted another piece."

Luke read it.

I watched his face carefully.

"What does it say?" I asked.

Luke handed me the phone.

The headline read:

"Voices From Luke Bennett's Past"

Marcus groaned.

"Oh boy."

I started reading.

Daniel had interviewed people from Luke's old company.

Some said Luke was brilliant.

Some said he was intense.

Some said he pushed too hard.

But then there was one interview that stood out.

A woman named Elena Torres.

She said:

"Luke Bennett wasn't the problem people think he was. But he didn't stop things either."

I looked up.

"That's… complicated."

Luke nodded.

"That's accurate."

Rose tilted her head.

"You knew she'd say that?"

Luke thought for a moment.

"Elena always told the truth."

Marcus scratched his head.

"Okay but is this good or bad?"

Rose answered,

"It's honest."

Then the door opened again.

And someone walked in.

A woman.

Confident.

Calm.

Luke immediately recognized her.

"Elena."

Marcus whispered,

"Speak of the interview."

Elena smiled slightly.

"Hello, Luke."

Luke stepped forward.

"I didn't expect you to visit."

Elena shrugged.

"I was already in the city."

Rose leaned closer to me.

"This day is full of surprise guests."

I nodded.

Luke gestured toward a table.

"Sit."

Elena sat down calmly.

She looked at me.

"You must be Amara."

"Yes."

She smiled warmly.

"I've heard good things."

Marcus whispered,

"That's promising."

Rose elbowed him again.

Luke sat across from her.

"Daniel talked to you."

"Yes."

Luke nodded.

"Why did you agree?"

Elena answered honestly.

"Because the story needed balance."

Luke watched her carefully.

"And?"

Elena leaned back slightly.

"I wanted to see who you are now."

Marcus whispered again,

"Everyone's investigating Luke."

Rose whispered back,

"He deserves it after that article."

I sat beside Luke.

Elena studied us.

"You two seem steady."

I smiled.

"We try."

Elena nodded slowly.

"That's new for him."

Luke didn't argue.

"That's fair."

Then Elena said something that shifted the whole conversation.

"You know Daniel is looking for someone else to interview."

Luke looked up.

"Who?"

"Marcus Hale."

Marcus blinked.

"Wait… what?"

The room went quiet.

Luke's expression changed slightly.

"Marcus?"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus pointed at himself.

"I wasn't even there."

Elena smiled.

"Exactly."

Rose frowned slightly.

"Daniel wants a present-day perspective."

Marcus looked nervous now.

"I don't know if I want to be in a newspaper."

Luke spoke calmly.

"You don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with."

Marcus looked relieved.

"Thank you."

Elena looked at Luke again.

"You're handling this differently than before."

Luke asked quietly,

"How would I have handled it before?"

Elena answered without hesitation.

"You would have tried to control the narrative."

Marcus whispered,

"That sounds like old Luke."

Luke nodded slowly.

"That sounds right."

Elena leaned forward slightly.

"But you're not doing that now."

"No."

"Why?"

Luke glanced at me briefly.

Then answered honestly.

"Because the truth matters more than the image."

Elena studied him for a moment.

Then she smiled.

"Well… that's definitely new."

Rose looked pleased.

"I like this arc."

Marcus muttered,

"Rose is narrating life again."

But Elena wasn't done yet.

She said something unexpected.

"Daniel might end up writing something different than he planned."

Luke raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

Elena gestured around the restaurant.

"This place tells a story."

Then she pointed slightly toward the training kitchen.

"That program tells another."

She looked at Luke again.

"And you're not hiding from your past."

Luke nodded.

"No point."

Elena smiled slightly.

"That might be the most convincing thing."

Marcus relaxed a bit.

"So… we're not doomed?"

Rose laughed.

"Relax."

But I could tell something was still unfolding.

Because attention like this doesn't just disappear.

Later that night, after everyone left…

Luke and I sat together at our usual table.

The same one where we planned the wedding.

The same one where so many conversations happened.

I asked quietly,

"Does it bother you?"

Luke thought about that.

"Some of it."

"Which part?"

"That people were hurt back then."

I nodded.

"That makes sense."

He looked at me.

"But I'm not running from it."

I smiled softly.

"I know."

Luke reached for my hand.

"You still trust me?"

That question was real.

I answered immediately.

"Yes."

Luke relaxed slightly.

"Good."

I leaned closer to him.

"You're not the man they're describing anymore."

Luke said something thoughtful then.

"Maybe this is how people see the change."

I smiled.

"Maybe."

But I had a feeling the story wasn't finished yet.

Because when the world starts paying attention…

It usually leads to something bigger.

And Daniel Hart was still watching.
