Chapter 34 - Seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 2 – Episode 25: "Not Everyone Forgets"

Amara's POV

The article came out on a Thursday morning.

Marcus was the one who found it first.

Which was unfortunate… because Marcus reads headlines out loud like they're breaking news.

He burst into the restaurant holding his phone.

"Okay — don't panic."

Rose didn't even look up.

"That sentence always means panic."

Marcus walked straight to Luke.

"You might want to see this."

Luke looked calm.

"Good morning to you too."

Marcus showed him the screen.

I watched Luke's face carefully.

It didn't change much.

But I know Luke now.

Something landed.

"What is it?" I asked.

Marcus answered before Luke could.

"Someone wrote about the training program."

"That's good," I said.

Marcus hesitated.

"…Mostly good."

Rose finally looked up.

"Oh boy."

I walked over.

"Let me see."

The headline read:

"The Reinvention of Luke Bennett — Or Just a New Image?"

I felt my stomach tighten.

Rose came closer.

"Who wrote it?"

Marcus scrolled.

"Someone named Daniel Hart."

Luke spoke quietly.

"I know him."

That made the room still.

I looked at Luke.

"From where?"

Luke took a breath.

"From the past Adrian mentioned."

Marcus muttered,

"Here we go."

Rose crossed her arms.

"What happened between you two?"

Luke answered honestly.

"We worked together years ago."

"And?" I asked.

Luke hesitated.

"That company collapsed."

Marcus blinked.

"Collapsed how?"

Luke didn't sugarcoat it.

"People lost money."

Rose looked at him carefully.

"Did you cause it?"

Luke shook his head slowly.

"No. But I was part of the leadership."

That mattered.

I could see it on his face.

Marcus looked at the phone again.

"Well Daniel Hart definitely thinks you're the villain."

Rose sighed.

"Of course he does."

I looked at Luke.

"Why now?"

Luke answered simply.

"Because attention is growing."

Marcus pointed.

"Yeah this article is already spreading."

Rose read over my shoulder.

"Hmm."

"What?" I asked.

She pointed.

"He's not just criticizing you. He's questioning the program."

That made Luke's expression sharpen slightly.

"That part I don't like."

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah, attacking you is one thing. Attacking the program is another."

I looked at Luke.

"What do you want to do?"

Luke was quiet for a moment.

Thinking.

Then Rose said something important.

"This is going to become public conversation."

Marcus nodded.

"Definitely."

I asked Luke again.

"Do you respond?"

Luke shook his head slightly.

"Not immediately."

Marcus frowned.

"Why not?"

"Because reacting emotionally will make it worse."

Rose nodded.

"That's true."

But then something unexpected happened.

The door opened.

And a man walked in.

Calm.

Focused.

And unmistakably the person from the article.

Marcus whispered,

"Well… that escalated fast."

The man looked directly at Luke.

"Hello, Luke."

Luke stood up slowly.

"Daniel."

The restaurant went very quiet.

I stepped closer beside Luke.

Not defensively.

Just… present.

Daniel noticed.

"So this is your partner."

I nodded.

"I'm Amara."

Daniel gave a polite nod.

"I've heard about you."

Rose leaned over to Marcus.

"I don't like his tone."

Marcus whispered back,

"Same."

Luke spoke calmly.

"You could have called."

Daniel shrugged slightly.

"I wanted to see the place."

He looked around the restaurant.

Then toward the training kitchen door.

"So this is where redemption happens."

Marcus muttered,

"Okay now he's annoying."

Rose shushed him.

Luke stayed calm.

"What do you want, Daniel?"

Daniel answered honestly.

"The truth."

Luke didn't react right away.

Daniel continued.

"You built something new. That's impressive."

But then he added,

"People deserve to know who you used to be."

The room was tense now.

I looked at Luke.

He didn't look angry.

Just steady.

Then Luke said something that surprised everyone.

"They do."

Daniel blinked slightly.

"You're admitting it?"

Luke nodded.

"I made decisions in the past that prioritized growth over people."

Marcus whispered,

"Well that was honest."

Rose nodded quietly.

Daniel studied him carefully.

"That's not what I expected you to say."

Luke crossed his arms calmly.

"I'm not pretending the past didn't happen."

Daniel asked something sharp next.

"Then why should anyone trust this program?"

That question landed heavy.

I stepped forward slightly.

"Because people can change."

Daniel looked at me.

"You believe that?"

"Yes."

Rose added,

"We've seen it."

Marcus nodded.

"Daily."

Daniel studied Luke again.

"You're really different."

Luke answered quietly.

"I had reasons to rethink things."

Daniel glanced between us.

"Let me guess. Her."

Luke didn't deny it.

"That was part of it."

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

Then he said something surprising.

"I didn't come here just to attack you."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"Could've fooled us."

Daniel ignored him.

"I came to see if this was real."

Luke asked,

"And?"

Daniel looked around the restaurant again.

At the people working.

At the training kitchen.

At us.

Then he said,

"I'm still deciding."

Rose folded her arms.

"Well that's dramatic."

Daniel almost smiled.

Luke spoke calmly.

"You can write whatever you think is true."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"That's exactly what I plan to do."

Then he left.

The silence in the restaurant lasted a few seconds.

Marcus exhaled loudly.

"Well… that was tense."

Rose looked at Luke.

"How are you feeling?"

Luke answered honestly.

"Like the past just walked back in."

I reached for his hand.

"And?"

He looked at me.

"But I'm not the same person anymore."

Rose nodded.

"Good."

Marcus grinned slightly.

"Because I think the story just got bigger."

I had a feeling he was right.

Because something about the way Daniel looked at Luke…

Said this wasn't the end of the conversation.

It was just the beginning.
