Season 2 – Episode 22: "Learning the Rhythm"
Amara's POV
Three weeks into marriage.
No one really tells you this part.
Everyone talks about the wedding. The vows. The honeymoon glow.
But the real test?
Tuesday mornings.
I'm standing in the kitchen of the restaurant reviewing inventory when Luke walks in carrying coffee.
Two cups.
He hands me one without saying anything.
I smile.
"You remembered."
Luke raises an eyebrow.
"I'm married now. I pay attention."
"That sounds slightly threatening."
"It's commitment."
I laugh softly and take a sip.
"You've been up early again."
Luke leans against the counter.
"I had a meeting."
I pause.
"You've been having a lot of meetings lately."
Luke nods casually.
"Just tying up some business things."
I watch him for a second.
This is something I've started noticing.
Not secrets exactly.
But layers.
"Luke."
"Yes?"
"You ever going to tell me everything you're working on?"
He smiles slightly.
"I tell Amara the important things."
"That was not a full answer."
He chuckles.
"You're very observant lately."
"I'm married to you now. That's my job."
Just then Rose walks in carrying a box of produce.
She stops mid-step.
"Oh wow."
Luke sighs.
"What?"
"You two are doing the married stare thing."
"What married stare thing?" I ask.
Rose gestures between us.
"That look where both of you are thinking five different thoughts but pretending everything is normal."
Luke crosses his arms.
"We are talking."
Rose grins.
"That's not the same thing."
I shake my head, smiling.
"Good morning, Rose."
"Good morning, Mrs. Bennett."
Luke smirks.
"She likes saying that."
"I really do," Rose says.
Luke looks at the box.
"What's in there?"
"Fresh herbs. Also gossip."
Luke immediately looks concerned.
"…What kind of gossip?"
Rose sets the box down.
"Relax. Restaurant gossip."
Marcus walks in right behind her.
"Did someone say gossip?"
Luke mutters,
"This is going to be a long day."
Marcus claps his hands.
"Alright, married people. Update us."
I blink.
"Update you on what?"
"Marriage."
Luke looks confused.
"You want a progress report?"
Marcus nods seriously.
"Yes."
Rose leans on the counter.
"I'm curious too."
Luke glances at me.
"This feels like a trap."
I shrug.
"It kind of is."
Marcus points.
"Okay, first question. Who leaves the lights on in the apartment?"
I immediately point at Luke.
Luke points at me at the same time.
Rose bursts out laughing.
Marcus nods like a referee.
"Ah. Strong start."
Luke shakes his head.
"That is inaccurate."
"Luke," I say calmly, "you left three lights on last night."
"That was strategic lighting."
"Luke."
"…Okay maybe one light."
Marcus grins.
"Marriage is going well."
Rose studies us quietly for a moment.
Then she says something that shifts the room slightly.
"You two are calmer."
I tilt my head.
"What do you mean?"
Rose shrugs.
"Before, everything felt like survival mode."
Luke nods slowly.
"That's fair."
Rose continues,
"Now it feels like you're building something long-term."
Luke looks at me.
"That's the goal."
Marcus suddenly snaps his fingers.
"Oh wait, speaking of long-term — the new building renovation."
I glance at Luke.
"You've been spending time there."
Luke nods.
"Yes."
Rose crosses her arms.
"I stopped by yesterday."
Luke looks mildly surprised.
"You did?"
Rose nods.
"And I saw something interesting."
Now Luke looks slightly cautious.
"What did you see?"
Rose smiles a little.
"You."
Luke blinks.
"…Okay."
"Teaching."
Marcus looks confused.
"Teaching what?"
Rose explains,
"There were two young cooks there. Luke was showing them how to run a kitchen line."
I look at Luke, surprised.
"You didn't tell me that."
Luke shrugs lightly.
"It just started."
Rose tilts her head.
"And you were different."
Luke narrows his eyes slightly.
"What does that mean?"
Rose smiles knowingly.
"You weren't in control mode."
Marcus laughs.
"That's new."
Luke shakes his head.
"I can be relaxed."
Rose and Marcus both look unconvinced.
I laugh.
"Luke, they're not wrong."
Luke sighs.
"Okay maybe I'm… learning."
Rose nods.
"Exactly."
There's a moment of quiet.
Then Rose adds something softer.
"And Amara hasn't even seen the best part yet."
I look between them.
"What best part?"
Luke quickly speaks.
"Rose exaggerates."
Rose smiles.
"I do not."
Marcus leans in.
"Oh I like where this is going."
I cross my arms.
"Alright, what is everyone not telling me?"
Luke sighs.
"Nothing dramatic."
Rose looks at me.
"He stayed late."
"That's normal."
"No," she says gently. "He stayed after everyone left."
I glance at Luke.
"You did?"
Luke nods slowly.
"Yes."
"Why?"
He hesitates just slightly.
Then answers honestly.
"I wanted to make sure the program works."
"What program?"
"The training program for people trying to restart."
I soften.
"That means a lot to you."
Luke looks at me quietly.
"It does."
Marcus nods.
"Man's building a legacy."
Luke gives him a look.
"Relax."
Rose studies both of us again.
Then she says something that lands deeper.
"You two are about to get busier than you think."
I blink.
"Why?"
Rose gestures toward the restaurant.
"This place is growing."
Then toward the new building.
"And that place is about to change lives."
Luke folds his arms thoughtfully.
"That's the plan."
Rose smiles.
"Which means Luke and Amara are entering the next stage."
Marcus grins.
"Boss level marriage."
I laugh.
"That sounds stressful."
Luke looks at me calmly.
"We handle stress well."
I nod.
"We do."
But Rose is still watching Luke.
That look again.
Like she sees something coming before we do.
Later that evening, after the restaurant closes…
Luke and I are walking home together.
Streetlights glowing.
City quiet.
I bump his shoulder gently.
"You're mentoring people now."
Luke glances at me.
"You sound surprised."
"I am."
"Why?"
"Because a year ago, Luke barely let anyone help him."
He smiles slightly.
"People change."
"Yeah," I say softly. "They do."
We walk a little further.
Then I say something honest.
"I like this version of you."
Luke looks at me carefully.
"This version?"
"The one who builds with people."
He nods.
"I learned from the best."
I grin.
"You're smooth."
"I'm married now."
I laugh.
But then I ask something more serious.
"Luke… are we about to get pulled into something bigger?"
He thinks about that for a moment.
"Probably."
"Does that worry you?"
He looks straight ahead.
"Not if Amara is beside me."
That answer settles something inside me.
And for the first time since the wedding…
I realize something important.
Marriage didn't slow the story down.
It just opened the next chapter.
And somehow…
It feels even bigger than before.
