Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Unmasking the Shadows.

The hospital was unusually quiet that morning.

Mireya felt it the moment she stepped into the lobby.

Not silent, exactly—but tense, deliberate, like the calm before a storm.

Jae walked beside her, umbrella in hand.

"Something's brewing," he said softly.

She nodded, gripping her bag tightly.

"Yes. And I'm ready."

They went through the usual morning routines—checking patients, assisting staff, delivering supplies—but every glance, every whisper seemed amplified.

Even small things felt like clues.

"Do you notice it too?" Mireya asked, leaning slightly toward Jae.

He scanned the hall quietly.

"Yes. And it's intentional."

Her stomach twisted.

"It's Lian. I can feel it."

Lian appeared unexpectedly near the supply room, clipboard in hand.

She smiled politely.

"Good morning, Mireya. Jae."

Mireya returned the greeting cautiously, eyes narrowing.

Something about Lian's calm demeanor didn't feel genuine.

Too practiced. Too precise.

Jae noticed her tension.

"Stay calm," he whispered. "We do this smart."

During their break, Mireya and Jae sat in a secluded corner outside the hospital, reviewing the subtle incidents from the past weeks.

"Files moved, supplies shifted, whispers…" Mireya muttered, sipping her tea.

"Everything points to deliberate testing," Jae said.

"And now she's bold," Mireya added. "It's no longer subtle."

Jae smirked. "Then it's time for a little payback."

She raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

"You'll see," he said, eyes twinkling.

By mid-morning, the perfect opportunity arrived.

A delivery error created a minor chaos in the records room—a misfiled patient chart.

Mireya noticed immediately.

"Someone's trying to provoke a reaction," she whispered.

Jae leaned over, whispering:

"Then let's provoke them instead."

Mireya felt a thrill.

It wasn't just retaliation.

It was a test of skill, patience, and trust between them.

They decided to confront Lian in a public but controlled way.

"Good morning," Mireya began, stepping into the supply room.

Lian looked up, feigning surprise.

"Ah, Mireya. Jae. How… coincidental."

"Not coincidental," Mireya said calmly, locking eyes with her.

"I've noticed the files, the altered charts, the subtle chaos. It's deliberate."

Lian's smile faltered, just slightly.

Jae stepped forward. "We know you're not acting alone. Someone higher up is orchestrating this. But we see it."

Mireya's voice was steady.

"We don't tolerate sabotage. Not to our work, not to our team, not to each other."

The tension was palpable.

Lian tried to recover.

"I… I don't know what you mean," she said, voice measured.

Mireya leaned closer.

"Don't lie. We have observed patterns, timing, and intent. And if this continues, we will escalate to administration."

Jae added lightly, with a hint of humor to diffuse the sting:

"Consider this a friendly warning. Don't push us into a storm we can't control."

Mireya noticed a flicker of fear in Lian's eyes.

The first crack in the facade.

After the confrontation, Mireya and Jae walked outside.

The city air felt fresher than usual, like tension was slowly lifting.

"You did well," Jae said softly.

"Thank you," Mireya replied. "I couldn't have done it without you."

He smiled.

"It's always together. We face storms together."

She laughed lightly.

"You're starting to sound like a poster again."

"And you love it," he teased.

Later that evening, Mireya reflected on the confrontation.

She realized it wasn't just about Lian—it was about trust, courage, and standing firm.

She wrote in her notebook:

Confrontation doesn't always need aggression. Sometimes calm observation and decisive words are stronger than storms of anger.

Jae leaned over, reading her words.

"Wise as ever," he whispered, placing a hand on hers.

The next morning brought an unexpected twist.

The administration called a meeting—an official inquiry into the disruptions.

Mireya and Jae attended, prepared with documented evidence.

Lian's role was exposed subtly but clearly.

Her attempts to manipulate events had been carefully tracked and documented.

The administrator looked at Mireya and Jae.

"Your professionalism is commendable. And your teamwork is exceptional. We appreciate your diligence."

Mireya felt a wave of relief.

For the first time in weeks, she felt in control.

Walking home that evening, rain lightly tapping the city streets, Jae teased:

"Do you feel like a hero yet?"

Mireya rolled her eyes.

"Hardly. But I feel… victorious."

They laughed together, the sound mingling with the gentle drizzle.

At her apartment, they shared a quiet dinner, joking about minor hospital mishaps.

The humor softened the tension of the day, letting them relax after weeks of pressure.

"Do you realize," Jae said with a grin, "we survived a storm, outsmarted Lian, and didn't even get wet?"

Mireya laughed. "You really like metaphors, don't you?"

"Only the good ones," he replied, kissing her forehead.

Before bed, Mireya wrote in her notebook:

Truth always finds a way. Courage, patience, and trust make storms bearable. Together, we are unstoppable.

Jae wrapped an arm around her.

"Together," he whispered.

"Together," she echoed.
