Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Whispers of the Past.

The morning air smelled faintly of wet asphalt and coffee.

Mireya felt it instantly as she stepped onto the hospital grounds—a subtle tension that didn't belong to the usual bustle.

Jae appeared at her side, a small smile on his face.

"Ready?" he asked, holding her umbrella.

Mireya nodded, adjusting her bag.

"Ready as I'll ever be. But I feel… uneasy."

He glanced around the hall. "Something's brewing. I can feel it too. But we handle it… together."

The first hours of the day were uneventful, almost deceptive in their normalcy.

But Mireya noticed small anomalies: misplaced charts, a nurse glancing at her a moment too long, whispers that stopped abruptly when she passed.

"Do you notice it too?" she whispered.

Jae nodded. "Yes. And it's intentional. Someone's trying to unsettle us."

Her chest tightened. "After everything with Lian… who else?"

He looked thoughtful. "We'll find out. Slowly, carefully."

During lunch, Hana joined them, a worried look on her face.

"Mireya," she began quietly, "there's something you need to know. Someone from administration contacted me yesterday. They're concerned about unusual activity at the hospital—staff miscommunication, misplaced files… all traced back to subtle interference. They asked me to keep an eye on you and Jae."

Mireya froze.

"Why would they need me monitored? We haven't done anything wrong."

Hana shook her head. "They suspect that someone is trying to destabilize staff relationships. And… it seems you and Jae are the focus."

Her stomach twisted.

"It's not just Lian then. Someone higher up is involved."

Jae's hand found hers, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

"Then we stay sharp. Calm. And together."

Later, Mireya had a moment alone in the supply room.

She reviewed past incidents: altered files, missing equipment, subtle whispers.

Patterns emerged.

Everything pointed to someone orchestrating chaos from behind the scenes.

Her phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number:

"You're treading on dangerous ground. Watch closely."

Her heart raced.

"Jae," she whispered, showing him the screen.

He read it carefully, jaw tightening.

"Someone is testing us… again. But this time, it's personal."

That evening, they left the hospital together.

The city streets shimmered with wet reflections.

"You know," Mireya said, brushing rain from her hair, "this feels like more than just work politics. Someone really doesn't want us… together."

Jae smirked. "Then we make sure they're wrong."

She laughed softly. "Easier said than done."

He leaned closer. "Nothing's easy with us, but that's why it works."

The next day brought the first real external test.

A patient's relative caused a scene, misdirecting blame and creating tension between staff.

Mireya stepped in calmly, redirecting the situation with professionalism.

Jae watched, impressed.

Later, in the break room, they shared a quiet laugh about the incident.

"See?" he teased. "You're still graceful under fire."

"I'm tired," she admitted. "But graceful, yes. Maybe."

He grinned. "That's enough for me."

That night, Mireya's thoughts turned inward.

She reflected on the whispers, the subtle chaos, and the recent confrontations with Lian.

Her notebook became a sanctuary:

People test trust in quiet ways. Some are obvious. Some hide behind politeness. Patience and observation reveal the truth.

Jae leaned over, reading her words.

"You've become even wiser," he said softly.

"And braver," she replied, smiling faintly.

The following morning, a meeting was called unexpectedly.

The administration wanted to discuss recent incidents in detail.

Mireya and Jae entered the room prepared, confident in their documentation and strategy.

Lian was present, seated with a composed expression.

Mireya noticed the faint flicker of worry in her eyes.

The meeting began.

Questions were asked, details scrutinized, and the evidence laid out.

Mireya spoke calmly, with precise clarity.

Jae supported her, adding observations that highlighted their professionalism and teamwork.

By the end, it was clear: Lian's interference had been uncovered.

And the higher-level instigator remained unknown, a shadow just beyond reach.

After the meeting, Mireya and Jae walked outside together, rain clouds breaking to reveal soft sunlight.

"I feel lighter," Mireya said.

"Yes," Jae replied. "But the storm isn't over. We need to be ready for the next wave."

She leaned on his shoulder. "I can face anything with you."

"And I with you," he said, smiling.

At home, they shared a quiet dinner, teasing each other over small mishaps from the day.

Humor softened the tension, allowing them to relax despite the underlying threats.

"You really like metaphors, don't you?" Mireya said, smiling at him.

"Only the good ones," he replied.

"Like us?"

"Exactly like us," he said, kissing her forehead.

Before bed, she wrote in her notebook:

Trust and patience are stronger than chaos. Together, we can face anyone, anything.

Jae wrapped his arm around her, whispering softly:

"Together."

"Together," she echoed.
