Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Calm Before the Storm.

The morning air was crisp, carrying a hint of rain from the night before.

Mireya felt a quiet unease as she approached the hospital.

"Do you feel it?" she asked Jae, falling into step beside him.

He glanced at her, calm as ever.

"Yes. Something's coming. But we'll handle it—together."

She nodded, taking a deep breath.

Inside the hospital, everything seemed normal.

Staff moved about their routines, patients received care, and the usual sounds echoed down the corridors.

But Mireya's instincts were sharp.

Small things caught her attention:

A misplaced clipboard.

A glance that lingered.

A whispered conversation that stopped abruptly.

"Watch carefully," Jae whispered.

She did, eyes scanning every detail, mind alert.

By mid-morning, subtle disruptions began.

A scheduled test was rescheduled without notice.

A minor supply shortage caused confusion.

Whispers circulated again—soft, deliberate, and unsettling.

Mireya and Jae exchanged glances.

"Still trying to test us," she murmured.

"Yes," he replied. "But we won't falter."

During lunch, Hana joined them again.

"Things are escalating faster than I expected," she said.

Mireya frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Someone is coordinating from the outside. They're influencing staff, decisions, and even patient care—subtly. It's strategic."

Her stomach tightened.

"Then this is bigger than Lian," she said softly.

"Yes," Hana confirmed.

"Be careful."

After lunch, Mireya returned to her duties, alert and cautious.

She noticed Lian hovering near the records room.

The girl's calm demeanor seemed practiced, almost too perfect.

Jae approached her.

"Let's keep an eye without confronting," he said.

She nodded.

"Patience and observation," she whispered.

By late afternoon, the subtle sabotage became bolder.

Patient files were altered more noticeably.

Equipment was slightly misused.

Staff members whispered warnings behind closed doors.

Mireya's chest tightened, but she remained calm.

"We need proof," she told Jae.

He nodded.

"Evidence first. Strategy next."

The day ended with them leaving the hospital together.

The sky had cleared, sunlight reflecting off wet streets.

"You know," Mireya said, "even when the chaos hits, walking home with you makes it feel lighter."

Jae smiled.

"Even storms feel smaller when faced together."

She laughed softly.

"You really like that line, don't you?"

"Only when it's true," he replied, squeezing her hand.

At home, Mireya reviewed the incidents of the day.

Patterns emerged.

Someone was orchestrating everything—subtle, precise, and intentional.

Her phone buzzed. A new message:

"The game has just begun. Watch carefully."

Her pulse quickened.

Jae read it over her shoulder.

"Someone is escalating. But we are ready."

She nodded, trusting their teamwork.

That night, they shared a quiet dinner, laughing at small mishaps.

Humor softened the tension, allowing them a moment of calm before the next challenge.

"You always find a way to stay calm," Mireya said.

"And you always find a way to make me laugh," Jae replied.

She smiled softly.

Before bed, Mireya wrote in her notebook:

Even in the calm, the storm waits. We face it together, prepared, patient, and strong.

Jae leaned over, placing a hand on hers.

"Together," he whispered.

"Together," she echoed.
