Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: Hearts in the Crossfire.

The hospital lights flickered faintly in the early morning, casting long shadows across the hallways.

Mireya felt a chill—not from the temperature, but from anticipation.

Jae appeared at her side, carrying his usual calm confidence.

"Morning," he said softly.

"Morning," she replied, her eyes scanning the corridor.

"Today feels different," he murmured.

"Yes," she agreed. "The tension is… thicker."

The first hours of their shift were deceptively calm.

Patients moved through their routines, staff went about their tasks, and everything appeared normal.

But Mireya noticed subtle signs immediately:

A glance that lingered too long.

A whispered conversation cut short as she approached.

Files placed incorrectly, equipment shifted slightly.

"Still testing us," she whispered to Jae.

"Yes," he said. "But we stay steady. Observe, don't react unnecessarily."

By late morning, the disruptions escalated.

Patient records were tampered with, minor mistakes were amplified, and whispers spread like wildfire among staff.

Mireya remained composed, methodically resolving issues while carefully watching everyone around her.

Jae leaned close.

"You handle this calmly, but I can see the tension," he said softly.

"I know," she admitted. "But staying calm is the only way to see the truth."

During lunch, Hana joined them again, face serious.

"Things are escalating faster than expected," she said.

"Someone is orchestrating this from outside the hospital," Mireya replied.

"Yes," Hana said. "The higher-level instigator wants to test your patience, teamwork, and even your bond. They want to see if you can withstand pressure together."

Jae squeezed Mireya's hand.

"Then we handle it—together."

By mid-afternoon, the pressure peaked.

Lian appeared again, attempting subtle sabotage in staff workflows.

Mireya observed silently, noting patterns in her movements.

Jae leaned close.

"Wait for the right moment. Evidence and strategy are stronger than confrontation now," he whispered.

Mireya nodded, heart pounding.

Unexpectedly, the administration called another meeting.

Lian was present, her composed demeanor betraying a flicker of anxiety.

"You two have handled the disruptions admirably," the administrator began.

"But the external influence behind these events is escalating. We believe this manipulation is intentional—testing trust, loyalty, and teamwork. Be prepared for direct interference soon."

Mireya exchanged a glance with Jae, realizing that the storm they had anticipated was arriving.

After work, they walked through the city streets, lights reflecting off the wet pavement.

"You know," Mireya said softly, "even when pressure mounts, walking beside you makes it feel lighter."

Jae smiled. "Even storms feel smaller when we face them together."

She laughed softly. "You really like that line, don't you?"

"Only when it's true," he replied, squeezing her hand.

That evening, they sat at home reviewing incidents from the day.

Patterns were clearer.

Someone high up was orchestrating chaos, testing their patience and teamwork, watching their every move.

Her phone buzzed. A new message:

"The climax approaches. Watch carefully."

Her pulse quickened.

Jae read it over her shoulder.

"They're escalating, but we're ready," he said.

Dinner that night was lighthearted, filled with laughter and teasing over minor hospital mishaps.

Humor softened the tension, allowing them a rare moment of peace.

"You always stay calm," Mireya said.

"And you always make me laugh," Jae replied.

She smiled softly, feeling warmth despite the surrounding tension.

Later, Mireya wrote in her notebook:

Even when hearts are in the crossfire, trust, patience, and unity are the strongest shields. Together, we are unstoppable.

Jae leaned over, whispering:

"Together."

"Together," she echoed.
